  1. Yeah, that might be the best move. Perhaps I'm wrong or haven't seen enough, but it seems to me Sano's best plays are when he's charging, so playing back might be the best bet. Or maybe the second best bet; I'm not singling Sano out, but I'm really hoping that big overhaul of the strength and conditioning staff is due to confidence that some players can be improved physically. It would also be nice if they know how to add strength to Kepler and improve Polanco's throwing shoulder.
  2. ***Moderator Note*** I've merged the Colin Kaepernick discussion with the NFL Tidbits thread. At this time the Vikings forum basically just has game threads, a Vikings news thread and a NFL news thread. Also, yes, I'd prefer not to embroil the larger Twins community in this contentious discussion, there's a reason that Sports Bar threads don't pop up on the home page.
  3. Dream job, what a lucky guy. Sounds like he's got the PR stuff down too. Excellent article and glad to have Daniel and Pensacola on board.
  4. His range is poor due to his lack of speed and balls get by him or under his glove if he has to go too dramatically right or left. He is surprisingly nimble though and makes some really nice picks and barehanded plays when he's charging. His arm might be the strongest in the game. It can be inaccurate at times but it seems like those stretches mostly happen when his playing time at 3B is inconsistent.
  5. That still sounds like they want young elite MLB caliber position players. I’m not sure if the Twins have any of those. Maybe Rosario if he had more than three years of control left. The Mets are probably referring to Juan Soto and Glyber Torres types, which is probably aiming too high. If they want MLB position players, they might need to settle for quantity over quality.
  6. A team like Houston could really use him though and he'd be a significant upgrade at 1B for Boston, New York, Tampa, Cleveland, LA Angels, Colorado and St. Louis. Normally I'd agree that the position devalues him but this is kind of an odd situation where pretty much every team that views itself as a contender is actually deficient at 1B. And the contenders are the teams AZ can milk for maximum return.
  7. A) is hard though, because one year of Goldschmidt might not be worth terribly much to the Twins as they now stand, but if the Twins were in Houston or Cleveland's position, he probably would be worth a Kirilloff. So it's not like the Twins can gauge his cost based on what he's worth to them, AZ is going to want what he's worth to a team thinking he's the missing piece to a World Series.
  8. Sale, Verlander, Stanton, and Andrew Miller were all acquired when those clubs were front runners, not when those clubs were wallowing in disappointment as we currently find the Twins.
  9. How can anyone look at most of the league's elite teams like Houston, Boston, Cleveland , the Yankees or the Dodgers and think that relying on the farm system hasn't worked out?
  10. To me the key is to find out if the path the Red Sox young players took was entirely due to the players, or if it was guided by the team. Also perhaps more importantly, was the path the Twins young players took entirely their own doing, or was there some guidance that the team failed to provide.
  11. It was a huge improvement! It used to be they didn't roster 4th over all picks! Edit: Ninja'd. Old joke I guess.
  12. Baldelli and company are going to need to find a way to get more out his players than what Molitor did from the sound of it. Reinforcements do not appear imminent. I am a believer that managerial changes can have significant positive yet intangible impacts, so I don't think better baseball is out of the question by any means.
  13. I'd like to do that for other teams' good young players, I don't care how the Twins get their sustainable core. I guess I don't see Paxton being a building block type of player. He might make for a nice free agent target in two years should the Twins have those building block players though.
  14. It is a mess, I want them to cut half of the roster, salvage what they can. I don't think they're close though unless they can fix what's left. They need to develop their Betts and Bogaerts, Lindor and Rameriz, Correa and Bregman. It was supposed to be Buxton and Sano. If that's somehow still possible great, if it's not, it better be Lewis and Kirilloff, if it's not them either we as fans will just continue to be screwed over. They have to figure out how to create their own star players.
  15. Him being on the same first ballot as Mauer sure isn't going to help the optics on Mauer. Great player, I always wondered what happened with those Seattle years, they all look like outliers. Was it the ballpark? It wasn't at all hitter friendly when it first opened.
  16. I'd say because they were very poor at drafting and developing for a long time and it takes longer than 2 years to fix that. Sorry I've been a buzzkill about trades, I was gung ho to move prospects for vets at the end of the season but became less so watching the young studs of the AL's big four teams carry their clubs. Then who they hired as manager and coaches really indicated that this team plans on fixing this ship from the inside out, not the outside in. The rebound will certainly be quicker if they can remedy the players who haven't lived up to the hype and not just develop their own guys, so here's hoping to that.
  17. I understand this completely. However, the feelings around here would probably be different if the Twins had actually been developing prospects lately. Frankly they've been just awful at it for well over a decade. I think prospects being over-valued is a symptom of our environment, other teams show that this isn't true at all; Boston, Houston, New York and Cleveland are crushing it with their prospects lately. They only made big trades after their development cycle started paying off.
  18. I'm not against trading any of the prospects; I am however pretty skeptical that a guy with two years left on his contract will be around to make a difference when the team needs him to make a difference. And he just can't stay healthy. I'm also not sure about the leveling up factor with prospects. When we have discussions about the Twins trading vets, we almost all want the best prospect available, not the most prospects. I think if people around the game were polled, Sheffield would be higher than anything the Twins could offer individually outside of Lewis and Kirilloff. I'd guess a Gonsalves led deal for Paxton would get universal acclaim on this site, which probably means it's increadibly lopsided in the Twins favor.
  19. They would undoubtedly ship off Hosmer and Myers if anyone even hinted at taking those terrible contracts off of their books. Hosmer was a free agent, Myers they traded for four years ago when the team was awful and the team has been awful the whole time since. They might be less awful had they not traded Trea Turner for Wil Myers.
  20. I'd trade Gonsalves for much, much less than Paxton, I've never been a believer in him. But Sheffield throws 95 MPH, misses bats and is a top 40-ish prospect and likely moving higher this offseason while Gonsalves is a soft-tossing junkballer who only makes about 1/3 of the top 100 lists and will probably be off all of them after he looked lost and without control in his debut.
  21. The MLB team is an absolute mess. The only league average offensive players they have are Rosario and Garver. They only have two players who can work a count and one of them is Robbie Grossman. The entire infield is a question mark; are any of their starting 2020 infielders even on their roster at the moment? They have no right handed bats and the bullpen is quite possibly the worst in the league. Just a guess, not my preference, but this team is probably closer to trading Kyle Gibson than trading for James Paxton. I was having different thoughts about this stuff at the end of the season, but after looking at the 40 man and realizing I want less than half of those players anymore, I've kind of had to change my view. I'd prefer shrewd trades and free agent signings, but man, they're going to have to hit on at minimum a half dozen on them to fix this disaster of a roster.
  22. Well we can pretty definitively say that was true for Terry Ryan, I'd completely agree on that front. Bill Smith was a different story, that was, well, just indescribable? This front office doesn't seem to hold Ryan's prospects in very high regard though, so I would expect them to trade those guys off, but they've also never been in a competitive position due to a very poorly constructed roster, some fault due to their predecessor, some due to their own free agent decisions. If like Ryan they have a competitive team and they're still not trading for the needed missing pieces, then I'll agree that they're gun-shy and not doing what it takes. Bad teams tend to be on the prospect end of these kinds of trades, and in my view, the Twins are still a bad team.
  23. If they're making a big trade now, I'd want more than one though. James Paxton doesn't get this club to the playoffs. Bad teams that try to win now by randomly making big trades look like the Padres. It sucks, but they have to build a better foundation first. They've screwed up doing it the last decade and should have way more to show for it at the MLB level but they just don't.
  24. This site would have burned to the ground if the Twins traded Lewis or Kirilloff for two years of injury plagued James Paxton.
  25. And that's assuming the Mariners would have accepted quantity over quality. Seems to me when the Twins are talking about trading a vet, we want the best possible prospects, not the most prospects.
