  1. No I agree there's likely many players that care about Buxton and would have liked him recalled had it been their choice. I didn't mean to imply a lack of empathy on the players' part. But I'd also think that there's got to be at least a couple of guys who like Jake Cave and perhaps were happy for him. Baseball players also seem to tend to take the short view, which is important when your goal is to win the game tonight; what have you done for me lately. I'd guess those without a horse in the race were happy getting above average performances from Cave. But these guys are all human, they're still entitled to both feel bad for Buxton and enjoy the production that Cave was providing in Buxton's absence even if the dynamic between those two feelings is largely contradictory.
  2. I would agree that the 10-15 players who may have been concerned were likely more concerned about future contracts than with Buxton. I'm guessing Jake Cave was more than happy Buxton was kept down, he wanted to keep starting. But I wouldn't think the situation is going to actually hurt the front office in negotiating extensions should they want to. The players want to make the smartest decisions for themselves, I don't think operating out of spite is typically in anyone's best financial interest. Spite is just an added bonus should it happen to align with your best interests.
  3. Who are you referring to?
  4. I don’t know, Diaz is already 27, his calling card looks to be his hit tool with some dubious versatility but next to no power. Someone will have to provide a decent argument to help me see how he isn’t just Willians Ausudillo but with more fanfare because he’s on a winning team. Bauers was a top 100 prospect just last spring.
  5. I can't make heads or tails of this trade. Wasn't TB high on their young 1B Bauers like just a week ago? It looks like they traded him for Willians Austudillo and Jake Reed and they had to fork over $5M to boot? That can't be right. I think the reporting is off. I wonder if Encarnacion is actually going to TB also, which would end up meaning Seattle is trading Santana for a comp pick and $1M in salary relief. That sounds a bit more plausible.
  6. *****Moderator Note******* I've merged the two Byron Buxton is pissed threads.
  7. I know NFL teams aren't as staunch in their demands that QBs be 6'5" anymore, but he is just so short. I know he's been good, but I think his height would normally keep any team from drafting him in the first round and then if they have to worry about baseball, no chance he goes high enough to give up his huge payday with the A's.
  8. What if the fifth point of reference was Paul Molitor got fired?
  9. Target Field is made for right handed bats. Also, the new shifts are worse for lefties since the fist baseman still has to play honest for righties. I’ll pass on a lefty 1B, if someone wants to stick a lefty in that spot make Kepler do it. And I’m not too fond of Cron or Austin. I hope there are better option for their spots soon. Just not interested in Bour not Adams.
  10. Is this about Bour, or still just about not liking Cron? I don’t need either on this team, but I want nothing to do with a left handed 1B at this moment. If that’s imperative, and I hope it’s not, I’d make Kepler do it.
  11. I don’t think the Twins need more left handed bats. They need someone to once again take aim at the left field seats.
  12. Looks like it's elderly pitcher signing day, now's your chance Bartolo!
  13. ***Moderator note*** Please stay focused on the topic and refrain from personal swipes.
  14. I’m luke-warm on Cruz, but I don’t have Cron or Austin in my long term plans anyway. If those two are casualties I’ll be fine with it.
  15. Billy Hamilton is worth 4.25M plus a 7.5M option year? I thought he had MiLB deal with spring training invite written all over him. If stolen bases are still worth 4.25M, I think you could have coaxed Ricky Henderson out of retirement. He could still top Hamilton's .600 OPS.
  16. I prefer to get pitchers from Oakland slightly less than getting them from San Diego and slightly more than getting them from the Saints. Which probably isn't fair to the Saints.
  17. That turn of phrase could be taken a couple of different ways.
  18. Mazeroski and Schoendienst along with Hal Newhouser, Phil Rizzuto, Richie Ashburn, Nellie Fox, Pee Wee Reese, Jim Bunning, Joe Sewell, Enos Slaughter and hosts of turn of the century "Eh, OK" type players have gotten in from the Veteran's Committee. They were basically created to specifically put guys in that the writers didn't care enough about but their peers thought were suitable. I don't expect anyone to agree with the Veteran's Committee, or whatever it's called now, but this isn't new, it's been the norm since the 1970's.
  19. I'd like to know what makes Sipp, Warren and Herrera in the mix. There are a dozen guys of that caliber or better, are these guys who are interested in the Twins? Are the Twins interested in these three specifically, if so, what differentiates them? Did Wolfson just pull three names out of his butt? Just curious, we see this kind of stuff regularly. I'd like to understand how these three got name dropped but not say Joe Kelly or Joakim Sorria.
  20. I'd guess Baines' enshrinement bodes quite well for Martinez's future chances.
  21. Well if you didn't adjust your perception of what the HOF is when Bill Mazeroski and Red Schoendienst got in, I don't know why you'd do it now. Guys deemed unworthy have been getting in forever.
  22. It doesn't bother me either way, but looking at that list, Baines' chances probably weren't hurt by having one former teammate, one former manager and TWO of his former GMs voting. I'd imagine GMs like to tell stories about all the Hall of Fame players they were smart enough to acquire.
  23. I think what looks to be an outlier season in 2017 is what is skewing the perception of where the team was and where the team is. They weren't supposed to be good (and frankly, they really weren't very good) and if their record had been poor as expected, all of those short term deals would have looked in line with being a rebuilding club filling positions with stop gap players and reasonable mid-season flips.
  24. Yeah, this is something I probably would have gotten anxious about back in the day, but it's not any more. I wouldn't have voted for either, but good for them anyway. This doesn't take anything away from the other folks enshrined. And, if their HOF caliber peers and contemporaries thought they were worthy, that probably counts for something. I don't put sportswriters down as a reference when I'm filling out my resume.
