  1. There's 29 other teams though, why do you assume there's something holding the Twins back aside from other clubs having better talent to offer in these trades? I like Paxton and I would have liked to trade for him, but honestly, I thought the haul would be lighter for him, this guy can't stay healthy and he's only got two years left. If the Twins could have gotten him for Graterol and other prospects I would have thought it fair. Romero, Lewis or Kirilloff? I think most GMs would say no, and I assume 28 of them did. You'll be lucky if Paxton is still on the mound come when you need him most.
  2. So for some reason the Mariners would have taken an inferior package from the Twins but the Twins didn't pull the trigger because they were afraid of trading prospects?
  3. Sure I suppose that may have been of interest. I don't know though, I think I'd much rather have Romero for the next five years over Paxton for the next two. Paxton has serious trouble staying healthy. I don't know, maybe, I could have gone either way on that package. But of course with Paxton the window is only two years, so that means the team is going for it now, which means they'd need to figure out a way to make a bunch of other moves.
  4. I thought Arraez would be rostered, but after reading this thread, I agree, he's unlikely to be taken due to his lack of positional flexibility and power. Good gamble. What's his ceiling, Bip Roberts without the speed? I don't know that it would be much of a loss.
  5. I would have liked Paxton, but I don’t know that the Twins could have topped the Yankees. Maybe if the Twins were inclined to move Kirilloff or Lewis AND Seattle was inclined to prefer them. But if Seattle wanted pitching the best the Twins have us Graterol; as much as I like him, Sheffield is a better prospect.
  6. My city just voted to enact Approval Voting. It's not ranking the candidates, just voting for as many candidates as you'd approve for the gig. We're going to save Democracy! Then I saw this poll. Might be some blank ballots.
  7. From my understanding Grossman can be dropped any time, so if they make a trade or sign a big free agent they can make room by dropping Grossman. The guys we're talking about here can't be dropped at a moments notice, barring a trade they have to remain on the 40 man through the off season.
  8. I'd protect the three bats. I would have liked to have seen Reed, but considering there could have been justifiable reasons to give him a look each of the past three years and they never did, I can only assume the interest isn't universal. If I was going to protect one of those relievers, it'd be Anderson despite him having the thinnest pedigree, but he's already 27, I don't know that I'd be too eager to have him on the 40-man the rest of the winter. The one guy who I thought was eligible but I haven't seen anyone predict to be protected is Cody Stashak. After converting from a starter, he looks like he fits the new trend of multi-inning relievers who both miss bats and limit walks.
  9. I suppose there were a few people who didn't want to trade Hu, but if memory serves, the overwhelming gripe was that the front office ONLY traded for Jepsen when they should have done much more. But I'm not crying over Hu. Just another baseball footnote, I don't see the Twins rueing the day they traded him. Alexis Tapia on the other hand......huge mistake!
  10. That's going to be pretty divisive I'm sure. I've worked for more than one company though where they preferred to hire people with no experience so they could mold the employee to their vision without the employees having preconceived ideas about how the job should work. Of course that means the organization better have good ideas to teach these people.
  11. ***Moderator Note*** These team building exercises are clearly hypothetical, clearly unlikely and clearly just something fun to do while we have no baseball to watch. If for some reason these fantasy proposals bother you, I'm sorry, but please refrain from making thread derailing comments.
  12. Finished, that was a nice easy read for my coffee break.
  13. I’m all about the discovery; I’ll accept the associated trial and error laboratory fires that come with it. This franchise has for too long relied on letting other clubs do all the experiments while the Twins suffered the consequences of looking over the front runners shoulder for the answer without knowing the process of getting there. Also, perhaps I’m wrong, but I thought Hubbard was light on the science and heavy on the fiction?
  14. I agree that Greinke fits the salary dump profile. But does AZ fit that profile? If they’re rebuilding and not chasing free agents do they NEED that money off of the books? It’s not like they are a Pittsburgh or Kansas City market. Here in the much more thrifty Minnesota we’d be screaming bloody murder if the Twins choose not to eat the salary at the expense of prospects.
  15. I’m just fine with all the various degrees of lack of experience from the coaches. It’s not like these guys are new to the sport, just new to the old boys club. I think a, “Hey, we’re going to try some different things, this is kind of unprecedented, want to get in on the ground floor?” approach is going to appeal to young players. Might it not work? Yes. Has what they’ve been doing for a decade not worked? Yes. It might turn off stodgy, set-in-their-ways vets. The types I already have no interest in. I’ll trust math and science over tradition, gut-instincts and conventional wisdom. That’s not a new school philosophy, Copernicus, Galileo and Di Vinci had these same arguments during The Renaissance.
  16. Yeah, if anyone can get him it's the Padres. But it seems like a bit of an odd strategy to me. They play in a ballpark where wholly underwhelming swing-men like Tyson Ross, Trevor Cahill, Drew Pomeranz, Andrew Cashner, Ian Kennedy and Clayton Richard magically turn their careers around. That organization's problem has always been that they can't find enough reliable offense, and it's been that way since that stadium was built. If I was SD I'd be selling out for some bats. Or, possibly the cheaper route, renovate the stadium to make it more hitter friendly. Again.
  17. I can't think of three paragraphs that would encourage me more about this hire.
  18. The Padres are trying to trade for Noah Syndergaard it seems. Most people don't think he's actually available, but if he is, well, go get him Twins? I know the hindsight game is always eye-rolling, but this is a fun one. It used to be a bit of a joke that the Twins had R.A. Dickey, liked him and loved his knuckleball, but couldn't find room to roster him, only for the Mets to hit the jackpot with him the next year. The epilogue to that old anecdote was that the Mets then flipped him for Syndergaard. Oh what could have been! eyeroll
  19. I love unexpected hires. And I think it's clear from the last one, there's a really quick hook if it should not work out.
  20. Which ballplayers are giving away gloves?! Asking for my kid.
  21. If AZ is trading him, then isn't a rebuild the indication? And if they're rebuilding, then they aren't going to need Greinke's salary to sign other free agents. So it would seem to me that it's most likely that AZ wants the best prospects in return, which means they'll eat the necessary salary to do so. I don't think this is going to be a straight salary dump situation.
  22. I presume Carole could only get banned at maximum once during a single game though, correct?
  23. If he’s not a member of Twins Daily already can someone point him in our direction? I wish to give him a 25 point warning.
  24. There are so many good free agent relievers this year that the Twins will be tripping over agents begging to get their clients signed at the winter meetings. No one should be a given except for Rogers. And right or wrong, I think the front office gives May a shot at winning a rotation spot this spring.
  25. Yeah, looks like Pudge, Fisk, Carter, Bench and Berra are the only HOF "catchers" ahead of Mauer on the all time PA list. I'd guess in the case of 8000 PA, the cause and effect were being translated backwards. It's just harder to get the counting stats HOF voters like without 8000 PA, but counting stats have not historically been the benchmark when voting for catcher. Historically not for shortstop for that matter either.
