What To Do With Byron Buxton?
Bill Brown69 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My wild bird thought is that the switch of the outfielders last night was a tip. I think that they basically figured out that we have 4 guys who when healthy are starting OF's, not to mention that Krilloff is likely to be ready between July next year and April 2020. Showcase as much flexibility and talent as possible for a potential off-season trade. -
BREAKING: Twins Trade Rodney To A's

Golf clap. Good move with no downside. We will now know something about somebody and as far as who closes this year, everybody that might have anything! -
Dear Derek Falvey...Two things happened last night.
Bill Brown69 replied to Riverbrian's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I posted before that my Dad was a minor league catcher. I am not sure if this was for all of the 12 years he played pro baseball but for at least several of them the catcher who wasn't starting and the bench coach sat with a "prospect" or somebody between them. For 9 innings it was a rapid fire question and expect an answer session about all the nuances of the game. Everything was covered from defensive positioning of all 7 guys that can move to what pitch to expect, bunt, hit and run, fly ball where does the outfielder throw? Anything and everything that you could throw at somebody as fast as you could think it with no thought about a specific position, just trying to get the guys to know the whole game and everything that goes into it and what thought should go into any decision from anybody involved with it. I would strongly encourage that to be adopted in every minor league team, regardless of players. Even if you are a left handed version of Sano who is stuck at first base knowing what to expect without a computer to analyze it for you will not hurt a bit. And by the way Dad made one hell of a coach later on. -

Nobody has mentioned Cuddy yet. He had plenty of position flexibility and a team first mentality. I am pretty sure he would have put catchers gear on if needed. Maybe he should be hired in the minors to coach Get the gang back together!! -
He spent an inning in the radio booth the other night. Sounds like a great young man who just wants to go to work and get back to Target Field with a uniform.

I don't think he thought it would stick or last but that is the story told by all 3. BTW he was the big brother. -

2 stories about Dad and handling the pitchers. A young kid with a real live arm but control problems. 12 pitches into the game and not a strike thrown. 3 went to the backstop and 1 run scored. Dad took the ball to the mound, shoved it right under the pitchers nose and yelled " I got too F----ing drunk last night to chase this so throw it over the plate and let somebody else run after it." 9 innings later the pitcher had his first no hitter. Another pitcher with a live arm comes in the game in the 9th inning with 2 on nobody out up by 1 run. 4 straight balls. Dad goes out to the mound and tells him if he can get out of this jam he will set him up with that pretty blond in the 4th row behind the dugout. Made the kid look at her. Took his mind off being nervous and 3 outs with nobody scoring they won the game. Later this year that kid and my Aunt will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. Controlling a game cannot be measured, it has to be lived. -

Great article. My Dad spent 11 years as a catcher in pro baseball topping out at AAA. Even after 40 years of watching baseball with him I know less than 10% of what really makes a good catcher other than it changes, often from pitch to pitch. If there was such a thing as a truly elite defensive catcher who was perfect in handling the staff, the ump and positioning of defenders I would take him every day on any team if he could hit .195 -
I am glad they tried. If it were my money I may have tried harder but it isn't. I would love it if they would make Kepler and Jose a 10 year/ 100mil offer. For me I would flat line it. In 10 years either player at 10 mil will look extremely team friendly. Rosario? I am not sure he isn't worth more. No way Buck or Sano sign for only 100 mil on a 10 year deal.

A few things #1 I am convinced Jim is more of a baseball fan than Carl was, thus more willing to open the pocketbook to a degree, #2 Being in the fray for a playoff berth increases the gate revenue but usually the 2nd year is when it gets really noticeable. #3 I doubt that every FA that is on the list will walk at the end of the year with nothing other than the minor league guys to replace them. #4 Falvey/Levine have proven to be pretty savvy at this game. Credit where credit is due. #5 Money coming off the books is not an indicator of a 90-100 mil payroll next year. #6 If number 2 is right then I expect one of the core to get signed to a massive extension before next year. That is my only beef right now is I wanted somebody signed by now. Polanco, Sano, Rosario, Buxton, Keplar and Berrios all have question marks. Maybe they are using this year as a prove it year but I want AT LEAST 2 to not hit free agency at their first opportunity. Yes there is risk with every big deal and if you make the wrong decision you might (rightfully) be fired but that is what you sign up for by being a front office executive and why they get paid like they do. Done deal! I want at least 6 playoff berths in the next 9 years, at least 1 of the core still here and no more than 1 season of under 75 wins. And if I was in the interview room when they interviewed that would have been put on the table as expectations. If you want the job convince me you can do it! So far I am convinced but my glasses are a bit rose colored!

Twins Sign RHP Michael Pineda
Bill Brown69 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I didn't have time to read all the replies so if this has been brought up, my apologies. IMHO adding an option year would have required at least a 15 mil commitment. This is a great deal FOR BOTH SIDES. No side is going to win on every deal every time period. Pineda gets 10 mil, all the training facilities to be back as the best possible. In return he is only on the hook for 1, maybe plus years of being healthy and showing what he can do when fully healthy. Then he gets to hit the market again and try for his big contract. If he hadn't blew his arm out he would have signed north of 100 mil. He still has that chance and we have a chance that for 1 year he might be a 15-20 mil pitcher for only 10. Win/win but if I were in his shoes there is no way I sign longer than 2 unless it is 15 mil a year minimum. -
The reality on Jack's case is 14 consecutive opening day starts for 3 different teams. All 3 of those teams won a World Series. Normal logic says you put your best pitcher out on opening day so he must have been viewed as the best pitcher for 14 years and 4 World Series winning teams. Then there is that whole Game 7 thing. Sometimes a moment is big enough for a career. Jack is by no means the best player in the Hall, but he is not even close to the worst either. He probably isn't the worst going in this year.

Trevor May Presents A Planning Paradox For Twins
Bill Brown69 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Santana and Berrios are the only locks for next year. I do understand the age factor but I also think there is a coaching aspect to Santana that is being overlooked. May should not in any way factor into the signing of a starter this offseason, nor should Mejia or Gibby. We absolutely need someone of the caliber of Santana/Berrios to make a top 3. Let the rest of the contenders play out and go from there. With a top 3 of Santana, Berrios and FA or trade then see where we are at come deadline time and pick up a guy like the Astros did this year if needed. -
Buxton and Dozier Gold Glove Finalists
Bill Brown69 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Dozier makes enough diving plays to pass the casual eye test. I can easily see how he was included just from highlight reel footage. Mauer didn't make a lot of noise on the highlight reel but when you watch the games you realize that you might be watching the steadiest 1B in the game over the last 15 years. Nobody had any thought about "do I throw it" if it was a maybe play and it might be in the dirt. The infielders were able to just play and throw it when they got to it because the "Joe Wall" was there to make sure it wasn't a wreck.- 35 replies

Mauer Snubbed In Gold Glove Voting
Bill Brown69 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I really wanted Mauer to get the attention he deserved but it is nothing new for a no brainer candidate to not win. I have stated before IF Mauer would have transitioned to first when he was 20something he would be regarded as the best defensive 1B of all time. If Buxton can play healthy another 10 years he will be regarded as the best CF of all time. Enjoy the ride guys, because if this team stays together for another 2-3 years it may well be the the best defensive team of all time.- 51 replies

I want at least 4 of this core to be Twins for 10 years. That is why the FO gets paid. Make the right calls on the right players and get it done. All have concerns, yes it is a risk, but less of a risk IMHO than losing the fans by letting them all walk. But yes, I said 10 years. So we are talking 8 year contracts for at least a couple. Get 1-2 done this offseason and at least 1 per year for the next 2.

Yanks vs Indians..WE DIDNT HAVE A CHANCE!
Bill Brown69 replied to Twinfan & Dad's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
If it were easy everybody would do it. I agree we have a starting 8 that can win a WS. Bullpen, maybe with 100% health and all the good luck in the world the internal options could. Starters, good luck. -
Regression and Progression in 2018
Bill Brown69 replied to strumdatjaguar's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
With the age of this team there should be more progression than regression. 4-6 to the + side with maybe 2 on the downward plane. That by no means is saying we are a lock for the postseason next year because with a normal year that is what it will take to keep us competitive until mid September. -
There are only 5-7 that even move my needle at all. I think the BP could be fixed(maybe even great) with 100% health among the minor leaguers we have coming up but I know that is as risky as any of these lottery tickets. Pitching, pitching and even more pitching is the key, just so hard to do.
-
I think the pitcher that Rosie/Keplar would bring back on an even deal would be small pickings. I would like to see them shoot for Chris Archer. Start with Granite, Gordon + Rays choice of 2 ML pitchers, 1 starter and 1 reliever on the 40 man and 1 not on the 40 man. Then just hope they don't hang up on you. If next year had Archer Berrios Santana Then the competition between Gibby, Mejia, another veteran FA sign, Hughes(doubtful) the assorted ML starters that MIGHT be ready and add on hopefully Trevor May is ready by late June and finally you have a real rotation that might worry somebody, especially with this 8+ 1 big bat to protect Sano.

The Falvey And Levine Machine
Bill Brown69 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The July 30th Twins team is the reason every Tom,Dick and Harry with any coin in their pocket invites me to poker games. I buy every time I see any chance and lose my a$$. Yes, I have hit a few hands, raising 3 kings up when I needed a card for a straight flush comes to mind but every one of you would love for me to sit at your game. -
Should the Twins offer Mauer a Koivu-like extension?
Bill Brown69 replied to Monkeypaws's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I think there is something to that but talk to him now. Dave mentioned 2/25-28 but I think that is a bit steep, especially if the FO comes up with players to put around him to maybe give him a shot in his last couple years. I was thinking a base of 8 with maybe some performance incentives in it along with the trust on both sides that what is best foe the team comes in front of Joe. Maybe Garver takes 50-100 ABs away from Joe in a year or 2. Maybe Sano has to move to first. Maybe a lot of things but for RIGHT NOW and what we can see in the future Joe needs to be a Twin. I would come to a gentleman's agreement on a contract with a little give or take and plan on giving Joe a 3/26-28. He would still get the $$ but might have to play an extra year as a bench player/ part time coach to get it. -
Yup, but really no. They still have the highest likelihood of making the last WC slot but to really call this a playoff team we need, in no order Sano to stay healthy and be who we all think he can be A DH to bat behind Sano that might scare an opposing pitcher AT LEAST 1 more good starting pitcher. That is assuming this year's version of Santana and Berrios carries over, and no I am not talking about anyone in the Twins system. Make it a 1-2-3 I don't care but there has to be another established guy. A bullpen that includes someone that was injured this year. We had at least 2-3 guys that would/could have helped this year that couldn't answer the bell. Health and competition next year. All that means is that we are actually closer than we thought at the start of the year. 2 serious signings and health next year and we are right there at the top of the AL.
