    Wow. That's frustrating, but also impressive at the same time. That is indeed his job, and he does it extremely well.

    There has to some realism in these offseason approaches by the FO. If they're not going to be serious about going after a top tier free agent, then they need forget about those and pursue the next tier down and do it more aggressively. Going after a top tier FA half-assed while allowing lower tier players to sign elsewhere in the process is not the way to conduct an offseason. If they're going to go after a top tier FA, then they need to do it seriously. Otherwise, don't pursue them at all and get more of the less flashy names to fill out a roster. This team is much further away from competing than a Correa. Coming up empty and/or needing to trade for guys to fill the roster holes isn't a sustainable approach.

    Being in on and actually signing those players are two very different things. If they weren't tying up funds for a potential signing and used that to up offers on other players they were supposedly in on, perhaps they'd have landed a few of those players. This team wasn't a Correa away from being a true competitor, they need many other pieces. Does the extra money guarantee signing those guys? Absolutely not, but it certainly increases the odds.

    I don't think they should have, but they should have realized that there was no way he was signing for less and moved on quickly instead of holding themselves hostage. To me, that's the most frustrating part of it. You can't be that low and expect him to sign let alone basically put yourself in a holding pattern on other signings at the same time.

    I was going to say that I doubted it would even need to be free, but free beer would certainly have a greater impact that not free beer even if it were cheaper than it currently is.

    I'm coping, I have Scotch! It's a multi-purpose solution. It works when they're losing. It works when they're winning. It works when they sign the free agent of choice. It works when they don't sign the free agent of choice. It's also applicable to the draft!

    But they have, not only in this thread, but across the forum as a whole. The next tier down isn't as exciting as the top tier free agents so those threads get less traffic and exposure. But to say that nobody has offered other solutions is flat out inaccurate. But this is also missing the point. If they're not going to be serious about going after the top tier free agents, then they need to be realistic and go after the next tier down and sign multiples of those types of players. Ultimately, that's what's going to make this team better because they aren't just a top tier free agent away from winning. They had one last season and how'd that go?

    Is Swanson the type of player you'd do that for though? He's not the same caliber player as Correa. YMMV, but that's not a route I would go for Swanson.

    They could manage the offseason better by not putting all of their eggs in one basket on a top tier free agent and going after more guys on the next tier down. They do that all of the time but for whatever reason they weren't as realistic on Correa than they are with others. They essentially held themselves hostage by waiting out Correa. This team is much further away from being a real competitor than a Correa. I could get behind what they did if they were just a Correa away, but that isn't even close to the reality.

    May not be by Spring Training. Though, I imagine not landing a SS plays into that quite a bit. Or at least it should.

    Those were among my priorities as well. I like the Vazquez signing and the Farmer deal. I think they can do better than Farmer, but I'm perfectly fine with him as a stopgap for now. But they do need a bat. I think the lineup (and the pitching) will improve simply by being healthier, but that does still leave them a middle of the order bat short. At least in the short term. It's possible one of the younger guys gets healthy and ends up being that guy by seasons end, but I won't bank on that yet. And even if they are improved because they're healthier, I'm not convinced that's enough to really do much more than win a division.

    Perhaps. At the very least, he was insurance in case they didn't land someone else. Which is why it's so dumb that I forgot about him in the first place!

    A very good point. I hadn't gotten to lineup construction yet in my line of thinking.

    I agree. That's why I agreed with your general intent, just not necessarily as it relates to Correa.

    Agreed, it's like pitching. If nothing else, they're trade bait. I'm more tired of the constant turnover there than anything. I'd love for them to actually have an established SS that they can pen into the lineup year in and year out. In this particular case though, I'm less bent out of shape about it because I think the money can be better utilized elsewhere.

    Not to defend ownership here, but in the case of a SS, they don't necessarily NEED to go long term on a FA signing or trade acquisition. They have two in-house options that can fill the SS hole as soon as later this coming season. I do agree with the general sentiment of your point though. It's frustrating.

    Ha! I forgot about Farmer! I could live with that too. I'd feel better if we had a better idea of Lewis' time table, but there are worse options. Depth will still be an issue, but that's the case regardless.

    Only if I can frontload the deal to make sure that I'm getting paid for their prime display years before they accumulate dust and added risk of breakage.

    Personally, I'd prefer to fill from within but I'm not sure who that would be right away. I'm hoping Lewis can eventually fill that void, but we don't know what his timeframe will be and you'll need someone there in the interim. I can't see them promoting Lee that quickly. Unless I'm forgetting about someone, none of the other in-house options excite me. So, I'm kind of left with going after Dansby because I'm not sure that a trade is that realistic.

    Now that Correa has reportedly signed with the Giants, how do you fill the SS position? Do you go after Dansby harder? What happens if he signs elsewhere? Do you fill the position from within? If so, with whom? Do you trade for one? If that's your angle, do you have a preferred target and what are you willing to give up to get him?
