1. Hockey used to be my favorite sport. Both of my teams moved (the North Stars and Whalers). The NHL is dead to me. I don't watch. I don't listen. I don't check scores. I don't pick new teams. If the Whalers come back, I will become a fan again. (I know the North Stars are gone forever.)
2. The posting fee (paid to the old team) and the salary are two separate items. The posting fee is a one-time expense, and, while I'm not a CPA, I would bet that it would be accounted differently. I think the real concern is the budget, anyway. Right now there is room in the budget. A few years down the road some ofthe yong players will (hopefully) start to get expensive. (By "hopefully" I mean that if Buxton and Sano aren't getting expensive in a few years, that means they were busts and the Twins have big problems.)
3. I hadn't heard the Texas rumor, but the only 2B I know who wants $300M is Cano. That sounds like a long, long long shot to me - the rumor was probably started by Jay-Z to get the Yankees moving.
4. That might change in time for Tanaka: Sources: Major changes coming to Japanese player posting system
5. Oh, THAT's what you meant. I just caught that I had listed him twice. When I'm being stupid please tell me clearly so I don't double down on it.
6. They resigned Pelfrey already? I missed that.
7. Of course, you know that cliche is a lie. They fire players all the time, although they have other names for it to make it sound better. Just last week on another thread I made a list of a dozen players I'd like to see "fired" off the 40-man roster. I've seen the comments about how the Twins stuck with TK and he got things turned around to hand over to Gardy. The thing is I don't remember TK's teams making as many boneheaded plays. His bad teams were well-coached bad players. They could get the bunt down. They could throw to the right base. They just were overmatched talent-wise. That's not what I have seen the past three years. The "Twins Way" was always the TK way, and that has gradually faded. I would also add that two championships buys you some time that making the playoffs and getting knocked out in the first round doesn't.
8. He said he loved it, so most likely not.
9. DeVries, Hernandez, Walters, Blackburn can go. I'm not sure exactly how you arrived at 6, but Darnell and Pat Dean can go too, if we really are out of room. I hadn't thought about Oliveros because he has been hurt, but when healthy he misses bats, although he has never been very effective for an extended period. Also, you have him listed as a starter, but he hasn't started a game since age 18 in the VeSL. Only DeVries and Hernandez are on the 40-man. There is plenty of dead weight from AA through MLB, and finding roster slots for free agents won't be a problem. (Prioritizing might be.) There is always someone hurt and some of these guys are at the point where starting isn't working. Too many marginal players is easy to fix. I want to know who the good players are who will take their places - that's the real problem.
10. 88 mph cutter is what I heard, but still, it was June. Get over it already. That said, if I saw McCann blocking the baseline like that I would have lowered the shoulder and gotten the brawl started a split second earlier. I don't know why he wasn't ejected, too. If he stays out of the way and says something as Gomez goes by, there's no brawl.
11. I probably had Roenicke too far up the list - he probably should have been in the number 11 range. I'm not sure the rules either, but I think that's the Outright rule your talking about. By remove from the 40-man, I'm talking about allowing him to seek employment elsewhere if he chooses. I'm pretty sure he's on a 1-yr contract and I'm pretty sure the Twins aren't required to offer him another. I would bet that they could let him know he can have a minor league deal if he'd like to come back, and it wouldn't matter much if he chose not to accept it.
12. Colabello is on the dead center of my borderline. Hendriks is a notch or two to the keep side. Colabello is a great story, but he is also 29, is limited defensively, and has an OPS of .632 in 171 PAs. I know that's a small sample size, but it's a whole lot bigger sample than most 29 year olds would get if they hit like that. Hendriks is 24 and a pitcher. Young pitchers often struggle for a while before they find some success, although I will grant that they rarely struggle as much as he has. I still think he has the physical tools to get guys out and he could put together the mental part. He struggled some in his first try at AAA, too, but then he did well the second time. Now he has been jerked around a bit and has regressed some, but I wouldn't write him off yet. Neither one is a great bet for success, but if I had to pick one, it would be Hendriks. Also, Colabello might accept a minor league deal again, knowing that there still might be a path for him to get back if Parmelee keeps punting chances, or if Mauer goes back to catching, or if Mauer keps on having concussion symptoms. It's not like we have someone locked in there.
13. I rather enjoyed the 2000's. This "not competing" thing got old a whole lot faster. It's hard to predict when a couple of guys are going to have big years and your pitchers are going to stay healthy. When that happens I'd rather not have Clete Thomas and Pedro Florimon running out there every day to screw the whole thing up.
14. I completely agree. Anorthagen posted an article I really wish would have had more discussion: Who Stays and Who Goes - Blogs - Minnesota Twins News & Rumors Forum I made a list of 13 or 14 players I would remove from the 40-man before Hendriks: 1. Fryer 2. Martis 3. Hermsen 4. Ramirez, Wilkin 5. Roenicke 6. Thomas, Clete 7. Roenicke 8. DeVries 9. Mastroianni 10. Bernier 11. Hernandez, Pedro 12. Pelfrey (FA - possibly re-sign, but probably not) 13. Colabello 14. maybe Parmelee That would get the roster down to 29 or 28 (currently at 42 with two on the 60-day). I'm not sure who will be added to prevent Rule 5 exposure, but some likely and possible candidates are Kepler, Polonco, Wimmers, Salcedo, Ibarra, Vargas. Vargas really faded in the 2nd half and is only in A+; is someone really going to take him in the MLB portion of Rule 5? I'm also not sure on Wimmers, although I guess we have to add him just to see if he can put it together now that he is (hopefully) healthy. I'd say we end up with 5 open slots. Are we going to really going to sign that many legitimate players? If we are and then we need Hendriks' slot, by all means take it (after considering Florimon or Escobar, who will hopefully be made redundant by one of those signings, and maybe Pressly.) But if we are going to do stupid things like sign Ron Mahay to a major league contract or trade for Jim Hoey, I'd prefer to hang on to Hendriks.
15. As long as that age is over 48 I'm OK with it, for now. Insult away. (That number changes to 49 in a few months and increases by one annually.)
16. I thought Smith made the Santana trade.
17. Here is my list of who should go from the 40-man (roughly in order of priority): Definitely off the 40 man: 1. Fryer 2. Martis 3. Hermsen 4. Ramirez, Wilkin 5. Roenicke 6. Thomas, Clete 7. Roenicke 8. DeVries 9. Mastroianni 10. Bernier 11. Hernandez, Pedro Maybe / next in line: 12. Pelfrey (FA - maybe re-sign if price is right, #4-5 starter money) 13/14. Parmelee and/or Colabello - Neither has shown anything at tthe MLB level. Parmelee has had extended opportunities and will be 26 in Feb. Colabello is a nice story, hasn't had much of an opportunity yet, and really hit AAA, but he's too old to be a real prospect and I will be surprised if that funky stance can produce long-term MLB success. I guesss we need someone to play 1B next year (assuming Mauer is still a catcher), but I would not count on either of these two to be an acceptable answer. This doesn't include guys who might be elligible for arbitration who might not be worth offering, mainly because I haven't checked who that might be. (Duensing? Swarzak?) This list is just guys whose value is less than the value of the roster spot.
18. I looked at tonight's score and saw a 1-0 win. Then I put my reading glasses on so I could check the details and saw the 0 was a 9. I think I will stop wearing reading glasses - the world looks better without them.
19. That was my guess too. I'm sure the real Pravda would be insulted by the comparison.
20. Our old friend Francisco Liriano had another nice game:
Pitchers IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA Liriano, F 8.0 3 2 2 3 7 1 2.88
Then the Pirates gave up 3 runs in the 9th and 1 on the 10th to lose 6-5. My biggest fear is they will release/non-tender their "proven closer" who will then sign with the Nats and then be traded to the Twins for Pinto.
21. He still has a minor league track record that says something could click and he could become a decent pitcher. The change of scenery could be at Target Field next year - I expect to see a lot of new faces, especially in the coaching ranks.
22. No, it works either way. If you think that means "worse than bad," then you are either very self-aware or falsely modest. If you think it means "pretty good, an up-and-coming prospect," then you would definitely be the Clete Thomas of GMs.
23. That's something you don't see very often.
24. He's giving himself an out when they don't sign anyone significant. "We were willing to spend that kind of mony, but X years would have been a foolish risk."
25. If getting Hocking out of the lineup doesn't put you over the top, nothing will. Is that the logic? It's not like we traded Babe Ruth. Heck, even the billy goat thing makes more sense.
