1. Willie Banks (you should have changed the file name of the photo - I might have cheated.) I remember when he was the next big prospect, but looking back at the numbers it was based more upon him being the 3rd overall pick of the draft than any actual production. He was pretty good throught Hi-A, but K rates plummeted after that. Let's hope Kohl Stewart doesn't throw 151 pitches in a game anytime soon.
2. I saw Stahoviak hit a long homerun into the upper deck of Yankee Stadium. The Twins were pounding the Yankees and Gooden. Then the rain came and it didn't stop. They didn't have five innings in yet, so none of it counted. My friend and his dad had to use our rain checks because that was the last Yankees home game while I was home (in CT) on leave. That day always seemed to capture the essense of that Twins era for me.
3. Is a guy who has yet to face a batter above high school ball really the #37 prospect overall?
4. I think you overestimate the distance between competing and not competing. If Morneau hits like his pre-injury self for 3 months (unlikely, but less unlikely than Cuddyer's career year he's having), Willingham starts to hit (likely), Gibson is good (50-50), Worley comes back up and is average (likely), then this team could compete this year. (I know that assumes the duct tape holds in all of the other places, too.) I wouldn't sacrifice a major prospect to try to force it, but this team still has a wide range of possible outcomes. I could see 70 wins. I could see 90. If they take a step forward in the next month, I wouldn't object to a minor trade to supplement an area of weakness.
5.
Age AVG OBP SLG OPS R. Rodriguez 27 .252 .337 .529 .866 C. Smith 26 .235 .302 .364 .666
Rodriguez has put up some decent power numbers, but at age 27 his upside is a poor man's Chris Colabello. Smith is less than that. Neither should get in the way of an actual prospect.
6. Vargas has demonstrated he can hit A+ pitching, so it appears he's just waiting for the promotion now. If these decisions happened in a vacuum, without impacting other players and roster spots, I would guess he would be promoted now. As it is, there is as close to a vacuum as you can get at AA (a 27-yr-old with nice power numbers, but still in AA at 27, and a 26-yr-old non-prospect), and at low-A there is a 1B who is waiting for Vargas to get out of the way so he can move up (http://twinsdaily.com/adopt-prospect-2013/6106-dalton-hicks.html). I'd be surprised if the promotion doesn't come within two weeks. 7. I think there's a rule against that here.
8. Even when the Twins were winning, there were criticisms for obvious failures to maximize talent. At the time, how many people liked the Young/Harris for Garza/Bartlett trade? Very few. How long did Aaron have his "Free Johan" campaign before Johan ended up in the rotation? I don't remember exactly, but it was a while. There were many players that the blogosphere identified as needing an upgrade that management took years to do - Rivas is the main one that comes to mind. How many were on board for the Capps-Ramos trade? Capps re-signing for $7M? How about Punto at 2yrs/$8M? Hardy for Hoey? Nishi was intriguing because nobody knew anything about him, but even those who thought he might be good didn't like the risk of going with him after letting an underrated player like Hardy go. I know we have a lot of great memories of those Twins teams, but there are a lot of "what could have been" and "what should have been" stains on those memories, too. And there are too many times where hindsight has favored what the bloggers and number-crunchers said at the time, not the management view.
9. A high school pitcher is a roll of the dice. Hopefully one taken at #4 overall has a better chance of a payout and the possibility of a very big payout, but the chances of no payout at all are still pretty high. There is a long road from the starting line to Roger Clemens Estates or Justin Verlander Way, and there are a lot of lesser side roads like Brien Taylor Place and Todd Van Poppel Lane. While sayings like "There is no such thing as a pitching prospect" and "There are no prospects below AA" are more hyperbole than fact, they should at least help temper excessive enthusiasm such as this. I don't want to wait for a rebuild that has Stewart as a key piece. He had better be part of a re-load, unless he turns into Doc Gooden and hits the majors at age 19 next summer.
10. Also, Twins fans aren't required to hate the Yankees. There are many other alternatives: Despise, detest, loathe, abhor, intensly dislike... My thesaurus ran out, but I'm sure there are more options.
11. It's OK. As a Twins fan who grew up in Connecticut, I have enough hate for the Yankees to cover you too.
12. He's saving the announcement for when he names Pelfrey as the AL starting pitcher
13. Vargas saw a couple of his teammates receive tickets to New Britain, but he was left behind. The two following games didn't do anything to make the case that it was a mistake - a pair of 0-3 games with 5 Ks. Overall the past 10 days haven't been too bad - he is still hitting:
AVG G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO OBP SLG OPS Last 10 .281 10 32 9 9 5 0 1 6 4 10 .378 .531 .910 Season .286 63 227 38 65 20 1 12 51 25 52 .364 .542 .906
14. Last year the Twins signed all of their top 10 except #9. They had to make darned sure they took care of that one early this year.
15. I agree, and I haven't watched a full period of hockey since the Hartford Whalers moved, the second team the NHL moved on me in 4 years.
16. Paging Son of Sal...
17. I was having the same problem. My work-around was to open Word, create a paragraph break, and copied/pasted it into the window. Not pretty, but it worked in a pinch.
18. Also from the same game, it might be time for Rick Ankiel to go back to pitching. (Today would have been the day to try.)

R Ankiel RF 4 3 18 .182 .239 .364

19. Our old friend Kevin Slowey pitched quite a game today, especially considering he did that in innings 13-19 of the 20 inning game.
K Slowey (W, 2-5) 7.0 8 8 94-70 3.77
He out-dueled a suggested target for the Twins this past off season:
S Marcum (L, 0-7) 8.0 5 1 1 7 105-84 4.96
20. Auugghh. Joking around like that should get you banned. (Like I'm one to talk after my previous post.) Nobody has mentioned the obvious choice - Nick Punto. That's one way to keep Gardy from putting him in the lineup five times a week.
21. Minnesota has no shortage of crazy politicians - we could add a certain senator to list: http://rasica.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/franken_diaper.jpg
22. Different part of the anatomy. Twins Birthdays--June 7

Can't forget Laudner's "Buck-Ninety Fan Club" from the '87 World Series.
24. Made sense to me. I had almost the same reaction.
25. UConn! (Sorry - I have two sisters graduted from there and I spent some rather unproductive time at one of the branch campuses.) He made himself a bit of money by staying in school another year ($441,800 vs. $130,800) and he gets to play for his dad's old team. It's hard to hate him, even if he did turn down the Twins.
