  1. This is misleading. When he was originally signed, it was a 2-year/$12.75M deal. (I thought I heard $14M at the time, but I'm probably misremembering.) Then he broke his right arm in a fall around the house, and the Pirates voided and renegotiated the deal. Sure, only $1M was guaranteed, but he will earn the rest based on incentives (mainly for not spending more than the anticipated amount of time on the DL with the right arm injury.) If he manages to avoid falling in the bathroom this coming off-season he will probably get the full amount, even if his left arm turns back into a pumpkin. (I'm guessing he will make the incentives this year that vest next years deal at $8M.) Article with the details: Y! SPORTS So it's not as good a deal for the Pirates as it sounds, but what he has done so far has probably paid for the whole contract already. I was in favor of signing him last off season because I thought it was worth a roll of the dice, even at the amount originally discussed, but it did give me some pause. Instead, we rolled the dice on Correia and Pelfrey, with an upside of two #4/5 starters. We won that bet, I guess, but gambling and winning is a lot less fun when the jackpot is a buck-fifty.
  2. We didn't see the .263 Punto. We saw the .290/.352/.373/.725 Punto or the 210/.291/.271/.562 version. Granted, those were his two biggest extremes, but they were also consecutive years to emphasize the contrast, and they were the only two seasons in which he had over 500 plate appearances. In 2007 Gardy had Punto in the starting lineup 135 time (150 total appearances) and Punto put up that hideous line with the .562 OPS. He had a good year in 2008 and turned that into 2 yrs/$8M. He was then mediocre in 2009 and 2010, which led to his depature as a free agent. I didn't hate Punto. I didn't care about the quirky sliding. It just bothered me that a team that could have gone places despite a tight budget made it harder by misallocating $$, AB;s, and roster spots.
  3. Third possibility - good agent
  4. I've seen the same number of both. (zero, or one if you count the ones on their backs.)
  5. Definitely exaggerated. I don't think they are over 10 yet.
  6. He can't even pronounce yes correctly.
  7. Konerko was running inside the baseline the whole way - close to interference. Morneau couldn't really reach for the ball because Konerko was there.
  8. The Twins were in a spot where they should have either insisted upon an overwhelming return or kept him for another year. At the time of the trade it was a letdown because the return was far less than the rumors. Bill Smith blinked.
  9. I thought getting rid of Butera and the rest of his $700K contract was a good return in itself. I was expecting a bucket of used baseballs as the throw-in and I was fine with that.
  10. YES!! A new record! I got banned while typing only one 3-letter word. (It's been done with four letters, but never with three.)
  11. I got some work done, got some kids to bed, and then turned on MLB TV in time to see a ground ball, a throw to first, and some handshakes. All that's left now is to make a few obnoxious, uninformed comments on the game thread (working on #2) and watch some highlights. I guess some kids need earlier bed times.
  12. I followed a link that said "Swiftian satire must be attempted only by people" and was hoping to find out whose dog took over the keyboard after the owner passed out.
  13. I don't look at all like my avatar either. This is what I really look like:
  14. Now you're in the way wayback machine
  15. Once should have been enough.
  16. I hope that means a good defensive play, not a Steve Lyons moment.
  17. I think I saw a story like that once. Were you missing a kidney?
  18. Yep, we're gullible that way
  19. Trying to get a bucket of baseballs for Correia should have been high on the list. Maybe it was but there were no takers.
  20. It's going to be a long night for the bullpen. I knew we'd miss Butera eventually.
  21. If this team hasn't caused you to stock up enough already you're either not a serious fan or not a serious drinker.
  22. Watching grass grow > Reality show > this game
  23. I'm kind of bummed about that, too. Their manager's aunt and uncle have lived right down the street from my parents for almost 40 years (I spent a good part of my childhood playing baseball in their back yard) and their pitching coach is from the same town (I umpired a lot of games while he was playing - I was in the same grade as his older brother.) I hope they can have a strong finish and convince management to give them another year, but it's a rough business.
  24. If A-Rod was still at the top of his game, would the Yankees be hanging him out to dry (so they can recoup some of the contract and not have it count against their payroll)? If the Yankees were backing him all the way instead of hoping they can justify voiding his contract, would Selig be taking such a hard line with him? (I know that is such a long shot that it isn't really being discussed, but if he has a positive test any time in the future, my guess is he and his contract are done.) I hope the punishment gets rolled back to a token (the rest of this year, tops) and A-Rod comes back and turns into Chone Figgins (or worse) for the rest of that contract. I want it to be so painful for him that he wishes he was suspended so he could blame it all on Selig and the time away from the game. Bottom line - I hate the Yankees more than I hate A-Rod. I think A-Rod is washed up and I'd love to see him prove it (at the cost to the Yanks of $27M per year or so.)
