  1. Short thread. Must be analyzing the offense tonight.
  2. I guess I jinxed him.
  3. I can feel my waistline expanding just looking at the picture. (I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that I'm sitting on my butt in front of the computer again.)
  4. Suggestion for Glunn - don't post the analytical thread until after this one is posted
  5. At the beginning of the year I thought I read that Escobar had a better defensive rep than Florimon. Any idea why the job was basically handed to Florimon? Is Florimon really that much better defensively?
  6. We might need to make the other thread the analytical one.
  7. Supposedly, someone asked the John D. Rockefeller "How much money is enough?" His alleged answer was, "One more dollar than I have." The A's are using the Rockefeller principle tonight.
  8. It's not loyalty - they are just too drunk to find the exits. They will just discover it in the morning and try to remember buying it.
  9. I'm not so sure. Last offseason there was quite a bit of reshuffling on the staff. This is not a team that has played well fundamentally and only lost because of the lack of talent. This team has had plenty of breakdowns and failures that really fall on the shoulders of the coaching staff, especially the one at the top. I think Ryan's public comments are diplomatic because the season is still going on, but I think Gardy is gone.
  10. I don't think it's a lack of respect for the fan base. I think the front office is still stuck in the old ways of doing business and has become the caracature of the old way portrayed in Moneyball. (I'm not sure how that explains Clete Thomas - the numbers don't like him and any scout that says he looks like a ballplayer needs a new line of work. Maybe he has a hot girlfriend.) The lack of accountability is a problem at all levels. This team has been playing like a poorly-coached AAA team for most of the year, and while help is on the way, the pitching help looks like it will fall short of the needs. If that public scrutiny isn't in the deal already (and I'm sure it's not) you're not going to get it added now. There are plenty of other ongoing expenses for the state reps to look at without wasting time "investigating" the Twins. That would just be a photo op that would accomplish nothing.
  11. I have always been a Twins fan from afar, except 1965, when my parents moved from MN to CT just before the Twins' first World Series and not long before my first birthday. I guess I didn't really become a fan until I was six or seven, when the good years were either safely in the rear view mirror or well beyond the horizon. Growing up surrounded by Red Sox and Yankees fans during that time period made me pretty resilliant. The long stretch of success the Twins had through 2010 always seemed like an abberation, and it will take more than a few losing years to turn me away. (Maybe I'm part of he problem.) I didn't make it to a game the past two years, but that had more to do with the work and family schedule than with the W-L record. I really wanted to go to the recent series in Texas (now the closest team for me), but we had company coming in to town. The only thing that frustrates me is I feel like I could make better personnel decisions just with the limited information I get. I don't like the losing, and I suppose it would be a lot harder to sit through 40-80 games a year if I has season tickets, but I'm still fairly optimistic about 2015, and even 2014.
  12. Another excuse to use Dilbert - we know how the Unix goats got that way:
  13. The way the strike zone has been, I'm surprised he didn't call it a strike.
  14. Yep. I'm not reminded of the fact very often, so it's not too painful.
  15. He might have ruled that the batter didn't make an effort to get out of the way, which means the ball is dead and the pitch is a ball (or a strike, if it was in the strike zone.) I've never seen it called that way in MLB before, but I have called it in lower level leagues if someone leaned into it. MLB hitters are usually pretty subtle about it, and it doesn't require a good effort, just an effort.
  16. He said "dare to be different," but that's going a bit too far.
  17. You read my mind - if I was going to write something about the trade, those two lines would have been part of it. I'm not sure when I'll get over it, but we aren't even close to it right now.
  18. I'd be OK with it. He should be cheap and he could be good again - it's worth a gamble.
  19. That definitely ain't first and foremost for me. Sure, I'm happy for him and I'm glad I can wear my Liriano jersey in public, but first and foremost I'm annoyed that the Twins gave up on a high upside talent and signed losers like Correia and Pelfrey instead.
  20. We shoulda hung out back then
  21. You're in so much trouble at that point that it's best to just get it over with and answer "Yes." It's a lot less painful than the slow evasion while she pins you down.
  22. I thought we traded him already.
  23. The discussion was about whether Anderson had helped anyone improve once they reached the majors. Someone used Deduno as an example, but has he really improved since he moved up to the Twins? Or did he improve in AAA to get called up and then stagnate? (I think he had improved some until his shoulder started giving him problems.)
  24. I thought there was a chance because Bobby Cuellar moved up from Rochester to be the Twins' bullpen coach. I have vague recollections of Cuellar receiving credit for some of Liriano's early success, and it seems like I've periodically heard that they worked well together. I was hoping the Twins would re-sign him and Cuellar wiould help him turn back into the 2010 Liriano (or better.)
