There is probably no merit to Colorado trading Arenado. It is just not likely to happen... ...but...if we blew up the farm, we COULD land a franchise player in his prime. Couple of things-he has an opt out in his contract after 2021, but people are saying this could be renegotiated for an extra year added on at the end. People were asking yesterday why we would make this trade and give up prospects to do so, when we can sign a FA and keep all of our prospects. I suppose the answer would be because big name FA might not want to sign with us. While Arenado can stop any trade from happening, maybe he is sick of losing and would be willing to go to a winning team (in a bad division). Having an elite defensive third baseman also takes less pressure off SS, whether it is Polanco or whoever. Can you imagine his bat in the lineup for the next 7 years!? just dreaming.

    Alright-time to shift gears. Sign Betances and a few other big RPs and turn into a bullpen team. 15 man pitching staff should do. Then load up on offense! Icing on the cake is we don't have to worry about signing/being disappointed about not signing starting pitcher free agents any more!

    I am a realist and realize we will more than likely not end up with Cole. But for some reason, it feels like this is a year we have a chance. There are a lot of really good FA out there, both pitching and position-wise. Would not be surprised if the Yankees sign Cole. But I would also not be surprised if they signed Rendon or Castellanos/Didi instead...or went the Strasburg route instead. There are only so many teams that afford Cole right now. We are one. If we are ever going to throw an offer out there for an elite ace, now is the time to do it. There are not many opportunities like this. If Wheeler signs before Cole does, we add other pieces. Bumgarner, Ryu, Keuchel, Gausman, Aaron Sanchez, ect. I do not see a huge difference between Wheeler and those others. I see a HUGE difference between Cole and everyone else. Like, the difference between winning playoff series and not. *I am leaving Strasburg out, not because I do not like him, but because I am paranoid of his injury history.

    Sorry to get a bit off topic. Castellanos is one of the best hitters in the game and is still 27. He's going to get overpaid?

    Just thinking out loud here. Feels like the 5/110 prediction many of you have made is about right. Would you rather OFFER (because ultimately it is up to the player where he wants to sign) that $ on Wheeler, hoping he improves, or offer 6/200 to Cole, hoping he stays the same or does not fall off the cliff? Basically 22/yr vs 33/yr. with medium to high risk vs. very little risk (yes, I am using my own risk parameters).

    Ultimately, if you are going to spend this much on a SP, whether it is 5/89 or 5/110 or whatever it is, you better believe in his stuff to win a playoff start or two. I am tired of playing to GET to the playoffs. Sign someone who will WIN playoff games. Is Wheeler one of these guys? I trust our front office and coaches to determine that.

    I have not looked through a lot of this thread, so my apologies if my post is redundant. I think a lot of credit needs to be given to the Yankees, as much as it hurts. Boone did a GREAT job throughout the year managing and dealing with all of their injuries. For that reason alone I respect them more than I usually do. Not sure if you guys know this, but they are GOOD. Our pitching wasn't great by any means, but they took a ton of frustratingly close pitches. They played some damn good defense. Their pitching staff is good. This is what a WS contending team looks like. A lot of us on here were disappointed at the deadline for not adding key pieces. It definitely showed. Did we want to MAKE the playoffs or MAKE A RUN in the playoffs? Don't mean to beat a dead horse, but it is what it is. They will have to make the same decision this off-season.

    To me, yes. I might be absolutely wrong. But 96 with a 92 cutter has enough potential to pull that trigger. Could really go either way, but I vote yes.

    Perez showed enough this year to be in the discussion, no? Still pretty young, and flashed some good stuff. Not saying he should be a fixture in the rotation...but he has some value being a #5 candidate/long guy. I love Pineda at 2/30. Who knows if he takes it, but it seems reasonable. Maybe a third year option. Offering a contract to Odorizzi with less annual money than his QO is not being disrespectful. It's called a business. If he doesn't want a lesser contract, then I would rather spend money on Bumgarner and/or Hamels. That is my point. I think those two (even with their ages/miles) are more valuable than Jake. Just like...my opinion. man. Gibson might take a 2/20 or something close to it. 1-Berrios 2-Bumgarner 3-Pineda 4-Gibson 5-Perez depth: Thorpe/Gonsalves/Smeltzer/The Cheese Grater/Dobnak

    You are probably right on the 3 year deals. And you are probably right on the 2/20 being very low. But that is what I would offer them, and then move on. Gibson may take 2/20. Pineda 2/30 seems fair. I'd rather spend money on Hamels/Bumgarner and then let Perez/Thorpe/Smeltzer take the #4/#5 slots. (To me, this is just buying time for our prospects to be ready).

    You don't think Pineda would take a 2/30 deal? Like I said in my above post, I want to sign Hamels or Bumgarner (Cole notgonnahappen). Pineda signs for 2/30. Either Odorrizi or Gibson signs for 2/20 (so probably Gibson if either of the 2). Perez starts at #4 or #5 in rotation, depending on if Gibson signs the 2/20. The AAA guys cycle through the back end of the rotation.

    Just my opinion...I see him as a league average to slightly above league average pitcher. Would like to have him on our team, but not for QO.

    If it was Odorizzi at 2/24, I'd like to have him and Perez at 7.5 both on the staff. I just don't want to spend QO $ on him.

    No to QO. For anyone. But I offer Odorizzi and Gibson 2/20 deals. They get more than that somewhere else, so be it. I offer Pineda a 2/30 type of deal and pick up the option on Perez. Cole is obviously the top prize in FA, and a long-shot to sign with us. I'm sure he resigns with HOU or Yankees sign him. Hamels or Bumgarner (or both) would be nice. Probably slot in as 3's. But I would like to get one of them. Wheeler is the other wildcard. 1 Berrios 2 Hamels or MadBum 3 Pineda 4 Odorizzi or Gibson 5 Revolving door of Perez and the AAA guys. Definitely not a rotation with top-notch aces. But-a rotation with a ton of depth. The type of rotation that can survive if we have the lineup that we do.

    Whether you agree with certain unwritten rules or not, and whether those rules are followed "correctly" during certain circumstances, a pitcher should always be fined for throwing at a hitter on purpose. If the pitcher does not agree with the fine, then they should have an opportunity to appeal it. However, most of these situations are pretty obvious. *If a player is plunked with off-speed stuff, they were not hit on purpose!*
