  1. This is a tough one, and an interesting discussion. I chewed for about 10 years, when I was playing college ball and coaching. I never once was influenced by MLB players who chewed. I did it because my arm was sore and it helped me loosen up. If MLB bans smokeless tobacco, it probably wouldn't stop that many people from doing it on their own time. If it does help to make a % of people stop using it, they will probably find a different vice. I'm not saying I would be against a ban. I am saying MLB could have more influence by heavily advertising against smokeless tobacco and its harmful effects within the stadiums.
  2. Marwin covers everywhere. But from what I've seen, he's a better IF than OF... basically we are knit picking. comes down to...do you like Schoop or Listerine more? Both work.
  3. I get it, and good point, but it is still more useful than having 3 UTIL guys or 2 pinch runners (especially with Garver and Castro both coming off of injuries). I'm choosing Arraez over Ehire. Think he has done some good things for us and supplied some good depth. Just think his time is over with us.
  4. I know there was a big thread on this, but it is an interesting topic. Why are you choosing Ehire over Luis? You don't think Luis can get enough ABs? Afraid of losing an insurance policy if Arraez goes cold (in which case, isn't that Gonzalez?)?
  5. A lot of valid points made throughout this debate. I trust the FO to make the right moves, whichever moves they make. Here's my take...time for Ehire to go. He is never going to be more than an average utility guy. In many cases, he would be valuable. I'm just not seeing it any more. Arraez can get groomed into playing 2B and/or UTIL next year. He can occasionally spell other IF spots (maybe 1 game a week at 2B/SS/3B). Having Gonzalez seems to afford them the opportunity to prepare Arraez vs. being cautious and keeping Ehire. As long as Arraez plays 3-4 times a week, he's getting great exposure and experience. (to add onto this, Astudillo staying on as catcher #3 and Util seems more valuable than Ehire)
  6. If Syndergaard and Scherzer are both "available" come the trade deadline, it would be an interesting debate in regards to which direction to go. What would you do if this is what we would give up for both? A: Syndergaard FA in 2022. Young, cheap. Chance of extending if all goes well. We give up Lewis, Graterol, Gordon. B: Scherzer FA in 2022. 34, but still one of the best in the game. VERY expensive. We give up: Graterol, Rortvedt and Gordon. Washington eats 1/3 of his contract.
  7. If he is hitting .330+ by the time early June rolls around, you have to bring him up. Even if he plays 2 out of every 3 games, either at 1B or OF, he makes a nice impact. This might be the perfect situation for it. He can help the Twins make a playoff push, while not being thrown into the fire all together. With so much depth, they can pick and choose when and where to play him and keep everyone fresh.
  8. Does Kiriloff's service time come into play for this year, and if so, what is the date we can bring him up?
  9. A couple of the pitches he threw yesterday were down in the zone at 83/84 mph. Not sure if he was taking a little off his cutter or throwing a change-up. Anyone know? If it was a change-up, and if he can locate it there with the rest of his pitches, his success might be sustainable. Nelly.
  10. I was 8 at the time, so I am probably completely wrong, but didn't he suffer an injury diving after a bunt that derailed him? (I remember him mostly because my last name is Erickson and I have a cousin named Scott Erickson and always told people that).
  11. A couple things came to mind when reading that article: 1) It seemed when things were going best for Sano, he was hitting hard hit balls to the opposite field on a regular basis. Will he try to find this approach again, or will the emphasis on the HR ball leave him as a dead-pull hitter? 2) Where does he hit in this lineup? Does he stay in Marwin's spot...6th-8th?
  12. I wasn't really being serious (the tongue was in the cheek). Just commenting about the post related to trading Castro. Yes, I understand trade values don't go up from one game.
  13. I still like him for some reason. I think he can still be very good. But I am more than likely very wrong.
  14. Garver's stock is as high as it is ever going to be after hitting 2 missiles off of deGrom-trade him in a package for a SP. Bundy, Jon Gray, Mike Minor kind of guys...
  15. Kimbrel would be amazing. offer whatever it takes. Worst case: we sell him off at the deadline because we are out of it. Multiple teams would give up excellent prospects for Kimbrel to enhance their post season push. Like, multiple top-100 guys. Best case...we finally have an elite closer and make our own post season push. Don't see it happening. But would be amazing.
  16. Definitely a bit stiff and can use his legs to drive a little more, but as many mentioned, good control at 100 mph is exciting. I just hope he can learn to pitch inside to set up his secondary pitches. Guys who are able to throw hard and command the inner part of the plate seem to separate themselves from others and are few and far in between.
  17. To help pace of play, lower price of beer. DH I'm torn. One of my favorite moments at a Twins game was seeing Ervin Santana clear the bases in San Francisco.I enjoy watching pitchers hit. But I also don't mind the idea of 15 more mashers who would have otherwise been out a job. I wish service time and arbitration would change dramatically. I'm all for a much more incentives and bonuses based contract structuring system.
  18. Does anyone have a good comp for him? Ted Lilly? I have never seen him pitch. Just wanted a comp to help paint a picture.
  19. I just can not imagine any scenario where Boston does not resign Kimbrel.
  20. Why the Marlins would do this or the Twins? Might be the best offer the Marlins get. Teams seem to be backing off a bit (although I keep waiting for a Verdugo/Ruiz offer from Dodgers). Twins do it because it might be the last time in a while the division is down...and very winnable. Might push us to the top of the central...if we can sign one damn pitcher worth anything.
  21. Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but the Marlins are denying any interested team a chance to negotiate an extension with him before a trade is made. Risky business. But I would offer any package not involving Royce/Kiriloff. Graterol, Rooker and Gordon might tempt them.
  22. I would not be surprised if the Dodgers offered Ruiz and Verdugo. I would be shocked if Mia did not take that offer. The Twins cannot afford to beat that offer, unless they go "Plan B" and sell Mia on Buxton and give up Graterol as well. Even that seems like a lot.
  23. Still a lot of free-agent season left. Quality players still out there. We've already signed a few FA-don't be surprised if they sign a couple more (no, I'm not expecting Machado). I agree with your overall concept, but we might be more in win-now mode than you think...let the off-season play out and we might be in as good of position as any team in our division. *Also, when the Twins are in "definite win-now mode," how much will they spend? What is the most we have ever spent? Do you expect that number to go up?
  24. FWIW Have a couple sports geeks buddies that are big time Angel fans (realistic ones). They said he "was decent," and probably the best RP in their pen, which was not very good. Parker a safer bet to contribute for us. Curtiss, like you said, has higher ceiling, but Parker a better chance of being reliable.
