  1. I would say it's unlikely all 3 are gone. It is likely we can pencil in 2 of Thorpe, Mejia, or Romero. 2020 is still a long ways away.
  2. I doubt there was more than a couple of relievers than became valuable at 22-23.
  3. Mejia or Romero will start the season in the pen. Fair chance Stewart will also. 2 of those 3, plus Gonsalves, Littell, DeJong, and sometime during the season Thorpe, will be emergency starting pitching depth. If the search committee had selected me, I'd trade for a youngish 2/3. There is nothing to wait for, the Central is just sitting there. Overpay with prospects from our very deep and talented farm system.
  4. When did we become a large market team? Do you remember how popular Joe Mauer's contract was with the board? When the deal was first done, BA said we would run into problems because Mauer's and Morneau's contracts were too large a percentage of our payroll. That was far from the only reason we needed to rebuild in 2012, but it played it's part.
  5. IMHO this was a weak free agency market this season. As of this moment, the market for starting pitching looks much better next year. I'm still hoping we trade for at least a solid 3, and pick one more solid reliever. Two more solid moves to go with the 4 solid moves we have already made. We are in good draft position, few teams do as well as we do in IFA, and we have seen 2 years in a row, they will be very active at the trade deadline. Time to open up the farm system for trades.
  6. The rebuild ended in 2017 when we were the first team in the history of baseball to lose 100 games and make the play-offs the next season. I recall several members telling you this. I really don't care what most people think and projections are merely guesses. I do recall all of the board's writers except for 1 or 2 predicted we would make the play-offs last season. I have more faith in those guys. Do any of these most people have names I would recognize? I can't imagine one of the talking heads would state the rebuild wasn't completed in 2017. Every year in every sport, teams falter when they can't get their best players on the field.
  7. Manny and Harper are going to large market teams. When a mid-market team pretends they can play with the big boys bad things happen. Think Cano and Greinke.
  8. Brewers, A's, and Braves took less time. Tampa hasn't made the play-offs since 2013 and the Rockies took longer. In no case was any rebuild much, much faster. In fact all were fairly close. I can't help but remember an article I read in BA years ago. The crux of the article was it takes a mid-market team a minimum of 6 years to do a complete rebuild. Feel free to contact the boys down in North Carolina if you want a copy. They are very helpful.
  9. Can you give the board the names of mid-market teams which have rebuilt much, much faster? I can't help remembering you posted the Phillies rebuilt much faster recently. They haven't made the play-offs since 2011.
  10. Every team in baseball would have done the same thing. Every single one.
  11. If Trevor May was our 12th best asset, Parker is 10th or 11th.
  12. As I recall, that was a Carl Pohlad mandate.
  13. That wasn't a mistake, that was the market. There have been fundamental changes in free agency the past 2 off-seasons.
  14. We came in 2nd on Darvish last off-season and had a number of members saying we didn't even try. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Theo is trying to find money to take a run at Harper. At some point in time, Darvish may become quite reasonable. I'm guessing next off-season.
  15. I can't imagine he'll go there and I expect World Peace before the White Sox ever win again. I have a hard time believing Reinsdorf will spent that kind of money, or any money for that matter. The Pohlads are exemplary owners compared to him.
  16. I don't care about mythical aces, ace is a very overused term. My hope is Thorpe fills the middle of the rotation starting in 2020. Finally we have 3 lefties, Gonsalves, Mejia, and Thorpe, vying for spots. Pitching is a numbers games, percentages are on our side.
  17. I don't have to find anything. Next time you speak with him, ask him if he has ever said to the media, he had occasional back issues in the minors.
  18. Thorpe is one of the reasons I'm not overly concerned we appear to have glowing holes in the 2020 rotation. TR always said you send the best 5 out there, whatever hand they throw with. I like having a lefty.
  19. I like the idea of bringing in two relievers for 2 years and around 20M total. I would have Lewis, Kirilloff, and Javier as my untouchables, the rest I have no problems dealing. In seems half the teams in baseball are in some form of rebuild and the new regime has thus far shown they are astute traders. Open up the farm system and trade for a youngish mythical ace.
  20. He was on the DL 4 times in 2015 and 2016. In an interview, he mentioned a chronic back issue, which also bothered him in the minors.
  21. We have members who want him to close. For a closer, IR is not an arbitrary number. If the Twins could get starting pitching trade value for May, he would be gone in a heartbeat. My agenda is Pro-Twins.
  22. Until he dies, members are going to want him to go back to being a starter. He hasn't started in The Show since 2015. I watched every game in September. He pitched himself back into the mix, but no more than that. If the numbers show he is on par with the best relievers, look for different numbers. Off the top of my head, look at inherited runners.
  23. My biggest problem with Molly was I thought he always burnt his bullpen out. Pressly in 2017 and Reed last year. Don't get me wrong, we need to spend big on a bullpen arm with some closing experience, but I wouldn't doubt the coaching change has an impact also.
