  1. Tough call on who gets sent down for Doumit. Hermann is most logical, but given his magic with Albers, they may want to keep him. I know Gardy hates not having a back-up CF'er, but he didn't even start Ramirez in a day came. He must not be that vital.
  2. If Morneau is not back, they're looking at a $63 million payroll. There's simply zero excuse for going into 2014 with that rotation and that payroll. Phil Hughes and Josh Johnson, just to name 2, could both easily be added without the payroll going past $90 million.
  3. Sell high! Sell high!
  4. We don't need to worry about creating the 'lowest paid team possible.' But if Sano and Stanton end up being comparable players, and we pay $100 million for 6-years of Stanton when we could have had 6 years of Sano for $20 million, that's a bad trade. Stanton's arb. years won't be cheap and keeping him past 2016 will mean at least 3 years of paying him and Mauer in excess of $40 million.
  5. Mastro is the clear choice to be on the team in 2014 out of those 3 in my opinion. He's the superior CF'er, the better hitter and by far the best base-runner. If they risk losing him for the sake of Thomas or Ramirez, I'll be pissed.
  6. Mediocrity that's a known-quantity has value. That's all Kevin Correia is. I'd rather not have given him 2 years, but it's not a tragedy. His career track is that he'd have an ERA a bit over 4.50 and go about 10-10. He's 8-8 with an ERA of 4.59. To say the Twins have an endless supply of guys in AAA who can do that every year is simply false.
  7. Does Stanton have 3 years before FA or 4? I assume only 3, which means we'd be getting the arbitration years. Trading 6 years of Sano for 3 relatively expensive years of Stanton is iffy. With what we'd have to add to it, it's probably not worth it.
  8. About $150K per strike-out! Can you believe it? It's enough to make your blood boil.
  9. Mauer sure like the strike-outs this year. Cue Mauer-hater outrage.
  10. They probably can't get him for the same price, but I sense he'd still be open to a reasonable 2-year deal. If it's true that the qualifying offer is $13-14 million, there's no way they can do that. His chances of being a Twin in 2014 are actually probably better if they trade him than if he stays and reaches free agency.
  11. Florimon is Nick Punto with a better arm. He's awful offensively. I'm willing to roll the dice that the decreased power #'s for Ramirez in 2013 are a blip. Even this year, he's far better than Florimon.
  12. I probably have an inflated view of him because he's a Twins-killer. But the Twins have a black hole at SS and the FA pool this year is awful. Ramirez is over-paid, but the Twins have money to spend. He make $9.5 and $10 m the next two years. Even though trades in the division are tricky, I think he could be had for a minimum. Maybe Hendriks? Worley at most? I'd pull the trigger. He's far better than what we have and he wouldn't be blocking anyone the next two years.
  13. I'd to 2/$12 to 2/$16 with incentives if he makes 500 and 600 PA's. I would not go 3 years under any circumstances. He's still one fastball to the head away from retirement.
  14. The model for the Twins isn't the Yankees, but it doesn't have to be the A's or Rays either. That would be true if they were still stuck in the Dome. There's no reason the Twins can't be the Cardinals of the AL. Should they sign FA's just to do it? No. But they need to go out and get at least one legit starter this off-season and probably a 1B. The starters coming up are not ready, nor sure things, and unless Parmalee turns it on, there's no 1B in the pipe and they need another bat. The current offense is pathetic.
  15. If he can stick at SS they should do it. Even if he can't, they need to start spending money. The attendance has been resilient thus far, but if they lose another 90 next year with a $65 million payroll, it will be a ghost town.
  16. I enjoy TK, but I'm not sure it would be great for 150 games. Further, I'm pretty sure he'd have zero interest in that. Dick and Bert have been a tandem for 18 years for a reason. Anyone can be annoying over 150 games if you want them to be. In reality, they're pretty good. TK is a nice change of pace a couple times a season.
  17. Morneau and Burton should be dealt this year. Carroll and Pelfrey as well if possible. Without Morneau, Carroll or Pelfrey, they're looking at a payroll of $65 million. The notion that they can't sign any significant FA's is total BS. They need to make a real play for a starter this time. I'd go with Josh Johnson. It would be nice to address SS in free agency, but the list of those available is brutal. CF - Hicks SS - Eduardo Nunez (acquired in Mourneau in trade) C - Mauer LF - Willingham RF - Arcia 3B - Plouffe DH - Michael Young 1B - Parmalee 2B - Dozier Bench: Doumit Escobar Mastro Collabello Starters: Josh Johnson Gibson Deduno Diamond Corriea Bullpen: Perkins Pressly Fein Thielbar Duensing Roeneke Hernandez/Swarzak
  18. I've been in Gardy's corner, mainly thinking back to TK circa 1999/2000. But it now feels more like Gopher basketball felt with Tubby Smith. Clearly he didn't suddenly lose his ability to manage. But sometimes things just aren't working out and a change is better for both parties. I don't see a tremendous benefit to doing it mid-season. The next manager is not on the staff. But, I guess 'avoiding a death march' is as good a reason as any.
  19. Yes, but 2001 was his last year and the first year that the new group clicked. He left on his own.
  20. Good to hear. Though, I'm not sure where the playing time will come? Is there any way he or Parmalee can play 3B?
  21. This thread could be about Tom Kelly circa 1999 or 2000. When the talent gelled in 2001, suddenly knew how manage again. The current streak is frustrating, but a mid-season change isn't happening. If we win 63 games again, Gardy will be gone. If we win 78, he won't. Let it play out.
  22. That doesn't explain the Drew Pearson push-off and many other things. I blame Bernie Bierman for winning all those national titles for Gopher football. What did he do?
  23. Perkins blows 1st save. Plouffe out at least a month. Minnesota sports. Great, just great. Someone go guard Adrian Peterson please.
  24. They need to get Willingham out of the #3 spot yesterday. Let Mauer and Morneau hit back-to-back. Get Willingham at least down to 5th.
  25. He's on pace to hit around .300 with 20 HR's and 85 + RBI's. That's hardly garbage. But unless Parmalee starts raking before 7/31, I'd rather keep Mourneau around. There's no reason to have a $70 million payroll in 2014 and we won't get a huge return for him.
