  1. We have plenty of money to spend. If Garza takes a similar deal to Nolasco, we are still only at $90 million and are fine for 2015 and 2016. If the problem is blocking younger guys, that implies that guys like Hughes are pitching well enough to be traded when the time comes.
  2. If say Worley and Fien or Worley and Burton would do it, I'd take it. Rosario is a lot to give up, but I'd probably do that too. Any more than that, it's not worth it. The injury history is too extensive and if he doesn't light it up, you're not picking up a $12 million option for 2015.
  3. Arcia better be given every chance in RF. Zero reason for Presley to play there.
  4. This. He gave us a legit chance to win most starts, which was a huge feat in that rotation. He also came through in some big spots (ending a the horrific losing streak at Yankee Stadium for example)
  5. I'd like to see SS addressed. But there are no FA options and the trade options are guys like Ramirez. I guess Bartlett is all we will see in that area.
  6. I'm happy with both moves. Only time will tell if they were the right choices, but I agree with being shocked at TR shelling out $73 million. I wouldn't mind a low-risk 3rd pitcher. Johan perhaps. Maybe Pelfrey, though I'm not that excited to give him 2 years.
  7. I'd rather spend $30 million on pitching. I feel Pinto and Hermann can handle the catching spot, even if Doumit is now a full-time DH. However, it fairly obvious we're not going to spend anywhere near $30 million pitching, so sure what the heck. I expect them to neither.
  8. Terry Ryan is simply too cheap and conservative to be the GM of a mid-market team. If they go into 2014 with a $70 million and a trash rotation, there's no one else to blame. He can follow Gardy out the door.
  9. Sign Hughes to a 2 or 3 year deal. Johnson for 1 with an option and big incentives and Johan to a low-risk deal.
  10. +1. IIRC, it seemed like the talk was that Rosario may end up as a corner OF'er? In any case, if the value is similar, I'd rather keep the sure thing this time.
  11. Taking 3 of 4 from the Red Sox at Fenway back in May. It actually seemed like we could be a .500 team. What a mirage it was.
  12. I'm OK with this, only because it keeps Terry Ryan on the hook for 2014. If they made the move to Molitor, it would be starting the 3-year window all over again. If Terry Ryan follows through on his threat to be inactive in FA again and we stagger though another 90 loss season with a horrible pitching staff, he should be fired right along with Gardy a year from now.
  13. So the bad PR of trading Morneau is minimal and shouldn't be considered, but having him as a pending free-agent would hang over the entire off-season? Not saying you made the first statement, but the range of thoughts on this is wide.
  14. The chances of the Twins signing Morneau for next year went down today, not up. People need to stop citing this as a benefit of the trade. The % of salary issue is only if they offer him arbitration, which they were never going to. If he'd stayed, he'd have had to take a deal prior to the arbitration deadline. There was no requirement for that deal to be a % of his salary. The 10/5 issue is valid, but there's nothing stopping Morneau from simply requesting a no-trade clause as part of coming back. It would be hard to blame him and we'd probably agree to it. Bottom-line is that players rarely go back to the team that traded him. Yes it happened with Aggie, but it's rare. If the chances of him being around next year were 20% yesterday, they're 10% now. If we'd gotten any sort of returned, it would be fine. But we got a warm clone of Clete Thomas, so the PR hit, however large it may be, was simply not worth it.
  15. Sweet. Great trade then, Terry. Assuming you're wrong, it wasn't worth the PR hit for a 28-year old OF'er, whether angry ticket guy already made his mind up or not.
  16. I suspect it's a 'PTBNL or cash' in the same sense it was for Jamey Caroll. It'll be cash.
  17. Shoot me for saying this since it usually a cesspool, but go read the comments on the Strib blog announcing the trade. I think it's indicative of 'Joe fan' reaction. To the average fan, this is more proof that the Pohlads are cheap SOB's doing a salary dump. One stating it 'cemented' his non-renewing next year. I'll grant you they could be getting the #2 prospect in the Pirates system, and you'd get the same reaction, but at least it would be worth it. No they wouldn't 'gain' any PR by letting him play the season out. But they lose badly on PR making this trade, and are getting nothing of value for doing so.
  18. Willingham could no longer be traded after noon yesterday.
  19. You guys realize we'd have to go like 5-24 for that to happen, right?
  20. They won't do it, but they should just move Mauer to 1B and platoon Pinto and Doumit at C next year (with Hermann still getting starts here and there.)
  21. From a purely baseball prospective, trading him for anything was right. But this wasn't Mike Pelfrey or Jamey Carroll. If all you're going to get is garbage and salary relief, it's not worth the bad PR of trading a former-MVP and the second-most popular player on the team. A case where Dave St. Peter should over-rule Terry Ryan, essentially.
  22. When this is all the return you get, it's not worth the PR hit.
  23. Another Clete Thomas who can't play CF. Wow.
  24. for OF'er Alex Presley. Per Ken Rosenthal on twitter.
  25. I've come around to the opinion that a change for the sake of a change wouldn't be a bad thing. But I'm also not sold on Terry Ryan being here much longer. Does it make sense to let Gardy go and Terry hire the next manager. Then what if 2014 is another train wreck? Does Terry 'retire' again? Seems very possible. Then is the new GM stuck with a manger he didn't hire. Bottom line: Terry and Gardy should stay or go together.
