  1. I'd do it at this point, even for 3 years. Money is no issue. We are barely at $80 million and 2014 payroll is of almost no concern given Morneau coming off the books, etc. The only reason to protest this over money is if you are a Pohlad heir. Money not spent on Saunders (or anyone else) is simply not going to be spent in future years/on the draft at this point. They are so far under their 'cap' that it's simply going to be pocketed. As for 'blocking' anyone, when is the last time that was truly an issue? If the younger guys are ready, Corriea will be swiftly shown the bullpen door or released long before Saunders.
  2. Neither. Perhaps not the best choice of words. But if CNN, etc. is doing a story on the issue, are they obligated to bring on the head spokesperson from the 'American Family' this or that to hear the 'other side' about how gays are icky and dooming America? I'm inclined to say no. If the writer of this story was prompted by a player saying he'd support a gay teammate does he need to run to Torii for the 'other view'? Again no. Obviously they can still do as they wish.
  3. Webb's a nice 3rd QB to use as a flex guy. Tonight showed he's not even a valid back-up, much less a starting option. They need to go get Fitzpatrick, Flynn or someone similar who can compete with Ponder but will be OK being a back-up.
  4. At this point, the 'dream' scenario would be what others have said Marcum Worley Pelfrey Diamond Corriea I seriously doubt we'll get Marcum, though we should as an $80 million payroll is pathetic. I have hope for Backburn to bounce back and give us 'twins' with Corriea at the back-end of the rotation. Hendriks and Gibson are both fine in AAA until May 15th, IMO unless they light up ST.
  5. Assuming they have 12 pitchers either way, I'm not a fan of a 6-man rotation unless 2 of Pelfrey, Gibson and Harden are in the rotation at once. I'd much rather have Corriea/Blackburn as a long man in the bullpen and have a quicker hook when a guy is having an off night.
  6. Wow. 11 pages on this? Impressive. This is not like asking Trevor Plouffe his views on abortion. Torii was asked what it would be like to have a gay teammate. Big difference. Of course he's entitled to his opinion, but 'free speech' means the government can't arrest you for speaking your mind, not that you deserve to have your view 'respected' and treated as equal and valid no matter what it is, which is what some of you seem to be asking for. We don't give Westboro Baptist Church 'equal' platforms to spout their views. Why not? Because their views are abhorrent to the vast majority of folks. 40 years ago, they weren't. Clearly this issue has not yet reached that level of consensus. But the way that changes isn't so much in changing the minds of the bigots. It's by taking away their microphone and marginalizing their views for what they are.
  7. Perhaps our other starter? Per twitter... @ajkfan Getting some steam that the #Twins might be closing in on former Mets pitcher Mike Pelfrey. Stay tuned sports fans...
  8. Lannan is at least as good as Corriea, IMO and could have gone in the pen if the young guys do well. Corriea signing looks much worse now. I figured Lannan would get at least as much as him.
  9. If the manager was anyone else, it wouldn't be a huge deal, but keep him away from Gardy. He brings nothing that Carroll doesn't already bring except a worse bat and we don't need a Punto/Carroll middle infield, which is what we would have by May 1st.
  10. If we could get a 2012 version of Jim DeShaies, Bill Krueger or Bob Tewksbery, I'd be thrilled.
  11. Yeah. Terry Ryan should get to hire his own manager. He shouldn't be saddled with the guy hired by the GM in 2002. That guy was a moron.
  12. Probably wouldn't matter, I doubt they'd spend the money anyways. If the Twins traded Mauer, they'd have a $65 million payroll in 2013. Tops.
  13. At this point, we won't go over $80 million on pitching. I'd like to see an upgrade at 2B as well. One spot for Florimon, Dozier and Escobar to fight over is enough. Let's get a veteran for the other. (I prefer Carroll as the utility guy.)
  14. If it works out as well as Tewksbury we should all be thrilled. I think I'd rather have Tewskbury. The 2012 version.
  15. Basically a Blackburn clone. I don't get it. I realize we have money to spend, but I'd rather have had almost anyone else, even Lannan. I'd rather have spent $10 million on Marcum than on both Correia and Lannan combined.
  16. First, they should have let the Dodgers have Morneau when they claimed him. I still don't understand keeping him. That $20 million we have to spend could be $33 million. That said, I see if Toronto will do a Morneau for Rickey Romero swap. If done straight-up we would shed $6.5 million in salary, so even if we have to kick in a couple million I'd do it. Unless Romero is injured more than we know, he seems a good bounce-back candidate. I'd pair Span with one of our pitchers (Deduno if we can dupe anyone into taking him) and try and get a young starter in return. If Washington is still interested in Span, I'd shoot for Zimmerman and settle for Detwiler for Span and Deduno (or one of our other AAAA pitchers). I think the Nats might be open to moving Zimmerman as he's arbitration eligible and they have to pay Strasburg and Gonzalez already. After these trades, the payroll is about $65 million. As much as Ryan seems against it, there's no reason we can't go big and go after Grienke. I don't think he will get much more than $20/year and I doubt he's dying to go to the NY or Boston market. That would leave rotation of Greinke, Romero, Detwiler, Diamond and whoever wins the 5th spot. The payroll would still only be ~$85 million, so we could upgrade 2B/3B or RF as well.
  17. Watching the Gophers get killed in Iowa City today was a reminder of the pain of firing someone just to 'do something.' The last two years have sucked, and baseball managers have less impact on wins and losses then any other coach, but I still don't want to be sitting here in 2017 having fired Gardy's replacement and just hoping that maybe the next guy can get us to the play-offs again. That said, I agree with those who advocate Bruno and/or Cuellar joining the staff.
  18. The only possible justification for him still being here when Plouffe comes back is if they're trying to humiliate him into walking away. And we're only talking about $3 million next year, not $30. There's no other excuse for him not to be released within a week. It's embarrassing to watch.
  19. He would almost certainly clear waivers. And if he didn't, let the claiming team have him. I'd much rather have Parmalee and $14 million to spend on another pitcher next year.
  20. +1. The reality is 75% of people were going to bitch and moan about this regardless. Offering him $12 million was no safe bet and the pick is not necessarily better. They're also save > $2 million in salary by doing it now. The pitcher is at least interesting and if the IF'er is Tolbert 2.0 that's not the worst trade ever made.
  21. They can probably afford one either way. But without trading Morneau, signing a Grienke will eat almost the entire amount available. They need at least one other mid-level starter and perhaps an OF'er if Span is moved, etc.
  22. Zero-chance of a mid-season firing. Gardy deserves better than that and there's no point. If they collapse like last year, there's at least a chance of it happening after the season. I'm neutral on it. But unless they coax TK out of retirement, it's hard to get fired up about Scotty Ulger or Gene Gleen and that's probably what we're looking at.
  23. He probably is. But he's arbitration eligible next year and they already have to pay for Strasburg and Gonzalez going forward, so he's not as untouchable as he might normally be.
  24. If he made $7 million instead of $14, I'd be fine keeping him. Getting rid of his salary is the difference between making a run at a top-end starter like Grienke and bringing in Pavano Part II.
