What are the odds Gibson gives us two good starts in a row? May as well call Slegers up to take Gee's spot in the rotation and send Curtiss back. Presumably Slegers could give you some innings tomorrow if necessary
It's true that Kintzler would not have pitched the 8th, but you can argue Belisle might have. In any event they shouldn't have lost a game they scored 11 in, Kintzler or no, and they shouldn't have been 3 hit by James Shields and a Bummer.
Stadium revenue is minor compared to TV $. The Twins have never gotten the massive TV payday many other clubs have gotten, even relative to market size. The timing of the Victory sports attempt/collapse and subsequent fairly meager long-term deal they accepted from FSN with their tail between their legs caused them to miss the boat. And now that the TV networks are taking it in the shorts, they likely never will. They also went from a net receiver of revenue sharing to a net payer (probably close to neutral now) so the increase in revenue wasn't as stark going from the Dome to TF as it might have been. The payroll is around $100M. It could probably be $115-120 if they pushed it. But it's not like they're sitting on mounds of cash.
Way to strangle a metaphor with facts. Obviously that comment would apply to any situation where there's runners in scoring position and your DH is up there trying to draw a walk. The 'high leverage' stats are surprising but I'll take your word for it. I have no issue with Grossman as a 4th OF'er to platoon with Kepler. He should never have been our primary DH and I certainly hope he isn't next year. And if he is in the line-up he should it 1st or 2nd, but that's a different issue.
And OBP is vastly over-rated when you're hitting 6th. When you come up with men on 2nd and 3rd and two outs, drawing a walk should not be your # priority. And having a DH who goes 2.5 months without a HR is not ideal either.
If they can do something in the 3/$36 range I would do it. If it's more than that, pass. It seems like Lewis is coming on fast and destined to pass Gordon by 2019. It might make sense to trade Gordon for pitching in the offseason and roll with Polanco/Dozier until Lewis is ready. By then, perhaps someone can move to 3rd and Sano to 1st.
I've felt from day 1 that Vargas should be a platoon DH (with Park or someone else) with occasional starts at first. I don't know how you can criticize what he's done at the ML level this year given how often he's been jerked around. Hopefully he's here to stay with Sept. 1 around the corner and can get regular playing time.
Excited for Curtiss. But I feel bad for Slegers. He absolutely deserves a second start and I think Gee is best suited in the long relief role, At least until Gibson's next implosion.
I think Gibson is (again) pitching for his job tomorrow. They already have an open slot for Slegers on Saturday. If Gibson is his regular self tomorrow. he swaps roles with Gee or Gonsalves
I'd say it's about 70% that Slegers starts Saturday. Just a question of if they want a reliever or position player for 3-4 days or if they just call him back tomorrow.
If Verlander were worth the prospects being listed here, he wouldn't be an August trade candidate. If we're taking the salary, we're not giving up Gonsalves, Romero, etc.
I'm glad they at least decided quickly and didn't play short handed for a week first. Short term I'm not sure it hurts that much given how bad he was scuffling the last 10 days. But I wonder if he makes it back this season. IIRC a stress reaction is what caused Mauer to miss April 2009.
They can walk and chew gum at the same time. And if it was 1 game a week, that would be one thing. But really, there's no reason Garver shouldn't be up here starting against all lefties.
