  1. I think Vasquez just doesn’t have good enough stuff for the Majors.
  2. People can’t and shouldn’t play while they’re injured.
  3. The winning record is driving some people batty...
  4. All true, but that’s what happens with prospect lists.
  5. I always enjoy Sickels. I think he’s level headed in his assessments and has a good understanding of risk. FWIW, Lewis is currently number two on Fangraphs’ prospect list.
  6. That’s right. Who could ever forget about Ron Coomer?
  7. https://www.twincities.com/2019/06/15/charley-walters-low-key-rocco-baldelli-has-just-the-right-touch-for-twins/ I wasn’t sure where to put this link, but if you scroll far enough you’ll see a claim that the Twins are making progress on a deal for Bumgarner. Doogie threw some cold water on it via Twitter, but it’s interesting nonetheless.
  8. Top prospect talent? Probably none at all, depending on what you mean by “top prospect.” I don’t think any of these guys would require a top five guy, except probably Smith. And even then, he’s not going to require any of the big three. I just don’t see the point in adding that much salary in order to hang onto maybe one or two mid-tier prospects. There are some excellent starters likely to hit the free agent market this winter (Cole, Strasburg if/when he opts out). I’d rather they invest money there than the middle ranks of their farm system.
  9. I highly doubt they’d have to take on Chen’s contract to get any of these guys.
  10. It makes no sense that Romero’s problems stem from moving to the bullpen. Starting or relieving, he should be able to throw a strike. I’m guessing there’s an injury, a mechanical issue, a psychological blockage, a strategic blunder, or some combination of those things. One doesn’t suddenly forget how to pitch because they enter in the sixth inning.
  11. The problem with this is that Scherzer probably won’t be available, and Stroman is an equal or better pitcher than Bumgarner by quite a few metrics. Not that they shouldn’t check in on Scherzer or go for Bumgarner. But Stroman should also be an option.
  12. Hm. Sounds like he’s maybe the sort (some) people dislike until he’s on their team.
  13. Why are people so turned off by Stroman? He’s young with a track record of above average to excellent performance—exactly the kind of player the Twins should be targeting for their rotation. I’m genuinely curious why some people don’t want him.
  14. Cave on his own wouldn’t get anyone better than the guys they already have in abundance. Hand would be great, but he would probably cost Kirilloff or Graterol + others. Cleveland gave up Francisco Mejia, who was approximately the number ten overall prospect at the time of the deal. Hand is signed through at least next year. 2021 is a team option. He has one less year of control than when San Diego traded him, but he’s having the best season of his career. I’m not sure I’d send a top prospect to a still-in-it division rival. Vazquez would be great, but more expensive than Hand in terms of prospects. Giles would also be good and possibly a little cheaper, given his previous red flags. I don’t know who they’re gonna trade for. I guess my personal preference would be Giles and/or Smith. I don’t think they’ll get more than one high profile arm, in any case, and maybe not even that. Even so, I think they’ll find some guys who can pitch tough innings.
  15. I agree. This is the most reasonable assumption, especially given what’s been reported about the Twins’ offer.
  16. You’re right that we can’t assume they don’t want to sign here. But when they go somewhere else, we can’t rule it out unless there’s some reason to. Maybe it’s more prudent to say that Player X didn’t want to come here badly enough to take a worse/comparable offer.
  17. Gotta say I love seeing an unapologetic misogynist like Bauer get knocked around.
  18. Sure, but in any given offseason (or June now, I suppose) they’ll “miss” on all but a few guys. I think every team has an unbreakable pattern of missing if this is the standard we’re going with.
  19. Speaking only for myself, the issue is that signing relievers to big contracts is usually dumb, even in the bullpen era.
  20. I agree with your general premise. They’ll likely need to give up Lewis or Kirilloff if they want a top line starter. Personally, I wouldn’t do that unless the guy the got had multiple years of control. So, basically Thor. I don’t think they’d have to give up major prospects for a real bullpen upgrade. Vazquez on Pittsburgh, Greg Holland, Will Smith, could be difference makers that wouldn’t cost a top prospect. A few guys in Oakland’s pen would be good additions depending on how the standings play out. My overall feeling is that they should never have been (and pretty clearly never were) Kimbrel or bust.
  21. I’m guessing there will be a at least a move or two before the deadline. We’ll see I guess.
  22. I don’t know where specifically. They can take on salary via trade. They can extend guys on the team. As far as the when, I assume they’ll add before the trade deadline. So...soon. Teams haven’t historically made a lot of trades in June, though, so “today” is more realistically probably after the All Star break.
  23. Right. That contract didn’t exactly end well, either. From the team’s perspective, I don’t think relievers pitch enough to justify investing a bunch of money in a single arm.
  24. Because I think they’ll invest it elsewhere.
  25. Kimbrel signed somewhere else. Where is my pitchfork? Don’t even try to tell me that April and May happened. I’ve already forgotten those months, and I want blood.
