  1. Radke’s feeling about pitching are not a matter of personal opinion. He was either passionate or not. His actions indicate he was.
  2. This is a great post. I’ll always admire the way Radke pitched through intense pain when his shoulder was injured in 2006. He made a meaningful contribution to that team’s playoff run despite having an injury that disrupted his daily life.
  3. I want to mention Henry Blanco, specifically for his performance during the month of April in the 2004 season. He turned back into Henry Blanco after that, but for a few magical weeks he replaced the injured rookie phenom, Joe Mauer, with a performance for the ages.
  4. I agree with the five players listed. Maybe a small quibble or two with the order. Basically I think there’s a case for putting Puckett at 5 and Mauer at 3 or 4. A fun thing to think about in this extended offseason.
  5. My memory is that the consternation of the Revere trade was more related to the fact that Span had already been traded a week or so earlier. They didn’t have anyone to play centerfield, and so they rushed Hicks up from the minors.
  6. Arraez put up a wRC+ of 125 last year. Revere’s career wRC+ was 82. They’re not even remotely close.
  7. This is pretty much where I’m at. Their rotation looks solid, but I expect they’ll add someone (hopefully significant) at the trade deadline.
  8. Isn’t Cody Stashak still a prospect?
  9. Other than the fact they’re both prospect for veteran deals, I see no meaningful similarities between the Ramos and Graterol trades.
  10. Fair enough. As I said in a post above, I saw the two things next to each other and felt like you were suggesting some sort of equivalence between the two. Sorry if I came off as glib or an a-hole.
  11. Didn’t mean to do that. When people put things in print, they need to be clear so as not to be misunderstood. I saw the two things side by side—AP's child abuse and Marwin's role in the cheating scandal both being reasons to stop cheering for them—and commented on it. My general opinion is people are overreacting to the Marwin stuff.
  12. I don’t see how beating your child with a switch and stealing signs during a baseball game are worthy of the same level of derision, but I guess it’s your choice how to feel.
  13. I disagree with this assessment. I think there’s a pretty convincing argument that Graterol is (er, was) their second or third best pitching prospect. Personally, I like Duran a lot better. There’s also quite a bit to like about Maeda. He’s probably the best strike out pitcher on the team now other than Rogers. His counting stats are suppressed over the last year or two from pitching mostly out of the bullpen. Conversely, his rate stats might be a bit inflated. He’s a good pitcher—in my opinion clearly better than a fourth starter. Way too early to say who “wins,” but the thinking seems to make sense. It’s definitely a win now move.
  14. My knee jerk reaction is to have mixed feelings. Graterol is tough to give up, but Maeda is a good pitcher with four years of control for almost no money. He has been pitching out of LA’s bullpen and wants to start. He has been a bit above league average in his career, but peripherals are pretty encouraging. Not sure the K% and K rate will hold up switching to a starting role in the AL. Here’s hoping for the best.
  15. I don’t follow your argument. Are you saying the Twins need to upgrade their already really good lineup? How do you propose they do this?
  16. Sure, but the majority of the roster is quite young. They’ve signed a few guys to contract extensions—why not suggest that’s their M.O.? I just don’t think there’s a meaningful trend here. If anything, these veteran signings tell us that they view free agency mainly as a way to supplement their homegrown core.
  17. “With all of this analytical evidence showing that major league baseball is trending younger and teams are shying away from signing older players, why have the Minnesota Twins been pursuing aging stars over the past couple years? What value is there in acquiring these aging stars?“ They’re probably signing them because they’re good, and the overwhelming majority of their roster is a good deal under 30.
  18. I think it would be a much more interesting discussion if we weighed the pros and cons of Donaldson being on the team, rather than making a hypothetical argument that probably doesn’t actually reflect anyone’s real viewpoint. This isn’t meant to be a knock on you, Matthew. It’s hard to produce content in the middle of January!
  19. The still need an arm or two, but this is a great signing. I think it at least buys them a little time to work the trade market. A deadline addition atop the rotation could be the final piece.
  20. I just want to say how refreshing this thread has been. People don’t agree on everything, but everyone has been willing to listen to other people’s views. In my opinion, this is what fandom looks like at its best.
  21. Great news. I’m a fan of this front office’s tendency to tack on team options at the ends of contracts.
