  1. We should expect some ugly wins (and losses) this time of year. Guys are beat up and looking for a second wind. I’m glad they found a way to finish. Go Twins.
  2. That’s fair. Gallen is a few years older, though, and his service clock is already ticking. If the Twins hypothetically wanted him and we’re willing to offer up Kirilloff, I just think they should demand a lot more than Gallen on his own. But, the deadline passed and this is all just intellectual.
  3. Your last paragraph is my exact point. We don’t know what's in Grienke’s heart or mind (I don’t always know what’s in my own heart and mind). So it’s really pointless to even ask. My gripe is that for weeks a number of people (I’m not thinking of anyone specifically) have been automatically doubting any piece of information that explains why move X didn’t happen. It’s paranoid to see an underlying set of shadow reasons (they’re lying to us because they aren’t trying to improve the team and they want my money) when the ordinary explanation is a lot more plausible: it’s hard to complete trades because there are many factors involved.
  4. Sure, but we can only go in circles with that kind of thinking. Maybe Jaylin Davis turns into Barry Bonds. I’m not saying Gallen is a bad prospect. Obviously he isn’t. Kirilloff just has way more upside, so swapping one for the other would very likely set the Twins back.
  5. Maybe someone has said this already, but Kirilloff would have been a terrible piece to give up for Gallen. Gallen is a back end top 100 guy. Kirilloff is by consensus in the top 30. Maybe each team thinks of them differently, but from what we know Kirilloff is a much, much better prospect.
  6. Fine. I don’t know why Grienke didn’t come here. Maybe it’s because a lot of MN sports fans spend more time trashing their teams than cheering for them. That’s just one thought. Or maybe maybe he has nightmares about being put into the cereal at General Mills.
  7. Because it was reported that he didn’t want to come here. The thing about conspiracy theorists is that they refuse to accept ordinary facts while uncritically accepting absurdities. Once someone has a narrative they think explains everything (e.g. everything we hear about player transactions indicates cheapness or inaction or whatever), then everything becomes evidence of that narrative. The most plausible explanation is the ordinary one—that the twins asked about him and he didn’t want to come here.
  8. Well, he does have a no trade clause, and the Twins are one of the teams he could block a trade to. So...I guess life is more exciting when everyone is out to trick you.
  9. I think this is a really solid trade. Dyson isn't the biggest name out there, but he has a track record as a reliable bullpen arm. There's something to be said about that, given that relievers tend to be volatile. Houston's rotation was already extremely good, and it just got better. They're the AL favorites. On the flip side, the Yankees did nothing to improve.
  10. The account has existed since 2014, so I guess it’s possible followers slowly accumulated? It’s also possible that whoever runs the account bought followers. At any rate, I’m not sure why someone posing as a news breaker wouldn’t put their name on their account.
  11. Who is this source? They’ve made like five tweets total, and one looks like a retweeted selfie of a teenage girl.
  12. I hope they make another trade, and I think they will. If they don’t, it’s important to remember that the bullpen has actually been solid this year. It’s not anywhere close to the disaster some people seem to think it is.
  13. As far as this whole WAR thing goes, I think it’s just really, really hard to be an “elite” first baseman given how the stat punishes the position defensively. There are currently four first basemen who have compiled more than 3.0 fWAR. One of them, Max Muncy, frequently plays other positions. Otherwise it’s Pete Alonso, Freddie Freeman, and Carlos Santana. Alonso is leading at 3.6 fWAR, which has required him to run a 149 wRC+. Fangraphs has him completely neutral as a base runner, and of course his defensive value is considered negatively given his position. For the sake of comparison, Xander Bogaerts is running a 150 wRC+ and is slightly positive as a base runner at about 2.5 runs—so something like 1/5 of a win. His fWAR is 5.1, in part because shortstops rightly benefit from playing a premium defensive position. My point is that a guy’s “eliteness” is largely a function of the position he plays. Currently, there are guys who are elite for first basemen, but it’s hard to say there are any first basemen who are elite players, at least according to the metrics I’ve included here. This seems weird to me. By wRC+, Cron is about 10% better than the league average hitter. Are his defense and base running that bad? I don’t know. Maybe. He looks fine to me when I watch. Is he a replacement level player? No. I think the fact that he plays first base might distract us from the fact that he’s a pretty good hitter. It’s definitely a position that could be upgraded, but I wonder if it’s a position where there just aren’t many guys who could significantly impact the game according to Fangraphs’ metrics.
  14. Why shouldn’t people think more trades are coming? They’ve been attached to multiple starters, and they’ve made multiple trades at the deadline both of the last two years. They hired a new front office several years ago. That’s a pertinent fact.
  15. Solid trade. Shores up the middle of the bullpen. They’re attached to several other names, so it seems pretty certain that this won’t be their only move. Fear not, Falvey critics.
  16. I don’t think it’s a good plan to call up rookies and play guys out of position. You must not have watched the twins when they went two years without a center fielder. There’s no upside to dumping Schoop in favor a guy in A ball, which is pretty much what they could expect to get. He’s not their best player by any stretch of the imagination, but they don’t need him to be. He’s actually been pretty solid with some really good stretches. I think his lousy weekend may be clouding your judgment. This is my last post on the subject, because we just simply disagree.
  17. What’s your solution if Schoop is traded and Arraez gets hurt? Or if he turns into a pumpkin? Or if either of those things happens then Polanco gets hurt? Or if those things happen, then Adrianza goes two weeks without a hit? My point is that there are too many things that can go wrong in a 162 game season for a winning team to trade pieces whenever someone slumps. This exact same discussion came up about Jason Castro in early May. Then Garver and Austudillo both got hurt. Had they traded Castro (some people, astonishingly, even wanted him to be straight up released), they would have had to move guys around on the 40 man and suit someone up who shouldn’t be on the major league roster. Trading guys off a winning team is dumb, dumb, dumb.
  18. There’s no good reason to sell parts from a pennant contending roster. Injuries and underperformance are unpredictable. They should be looking to add as much as possible.
  19. I think Vasquez just doesn’t have good enough stuff for the Majors.
  20. It makes no sense that Romero’s problems stem from moving to the bullpen. Starting or relieving, he should be able to throw a strike. I’m guessing there’s an injury, a mechanical issue, a psychological blockage, a strategic blunder, or some combination of those things. One doesn’t suddenly forget how to pitch because they enter in the sixth inning.
  21. The problem with this is that Scherzer probably won’t be available, and Stroman is an equal or better pitcher than Bumgarner by quite a few metrics. Not that they shouldn’t check in on Scherzer or go for Bumgarner. But Stroman should also be an option.
  22. Hm. Sounds like he’s maybe the sort (some) people dislike until he’s on their team.
