  1. Ohtani signed a rookie contract. Any team would have paid him the exact same salary. He made his choice primarily on location. I think that’s a bigger deal for any player than most fans appreciate.
  2. Well, a few fans probably make it pretty easy for him to feel this way.
  3. I, uh, don’t think Cole warranted that much money when Mauer signed his contract a decade ago.
  4. Good thing he won’t be their everyday catcher.
  5. Agreed. Garver has had a pretty unusual career to this point. He came up late and his bat has gone way beyond what anyone thought it would be. And I think it’s unnecessarily stressful to worry about these small moves. They don’t need to improve on the bottom few guys on the roster. They need to maintain their depth and add to the top. This move maintains depth.
  6. The difference is that Garver was a prospect who by definition had some untapped potential. Clearly, the organization saw him as a potential starter. Avila was brought in for the express purpose of backing Garver up for one season. The winter meetings haven’t even happened yet. There’s a lot of off season left.
  7. You’re probably not excited because he’s a backup catcher. Who gets excited about a backup catcher?
  8. The current alternative is Austudillo. Yes, this move made them better.
  9. Right. I forgot 2006 was Liriano’s surgery year.
  10. ??? https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/liriafr01.shtml
  11. There’s plenty of risk with Wheeler, as well. He’s had some significant injuries throughout his career, which has translated into only about three full seasons (in terms of IP) out of five. Last year, his ERA+ was just a hair over league average (it’s exactly average for his career), and his excellent raw stuff hasn’t quite translated to dominant results. He had a really nice season overall, but the contract he signed with Philly is paying him for the upside they’re going to try and unlock. He’s a really good pitcher, and I wish the Twins signed him. It’s not unreasonable to suggest, though, that they may have done the wise thing by stepping away. I think the real lesson to draw from all this is the same as it is every year: it’s critical to hit on all your picks when drafting early in the first round.
  12. A different poster made that analogy, not me. And the second half of my post says some things you might find relevant.
  13. The point is that the Twins likely had a maximum value they wouldn’t exceed, because they don’t think Wheeler is worth it. The question is what he should be paid, not whether they can afford to pay him. For instance, they obviously could have very easily afforded to pay Cron his $8 million, but ultimately decided that money could be used better elsewhere. In theory, they could have extended him 5/100, but that would have been dumb. Not saying I agree with capping their offer at 100 million (LNIII has reported the offer was 5/100), just that they seem to have drawn a line they wouldn’t cross. Wheeler was my first choice (well, Cole), but there are still some really good pitchers out there in Bumgarner and Ryu. Baseball teams can also make trades.
  14. This is a terrific thread. I just want to express my appreciation.
  15. The core that got swept in the ALDS with Johan Santana and Francisco Liriano leading the rotation, you mean?
  16. I'm just reporting what Rosenthal said. I think it's perfectly plausible and likely that Wheeler gives a crap what his wife thinks.
  17. Ken Rosenthal reports that Wheeler turned down a more lucrative offer from the White Sox, because he and his wife wanted to be near her family in New Jersey. No word on the dollar figure offered by the Twins.
  18. Teams don’t offer $100 million contracts for optics. And I’ve been a fan since the early 90s.
  19. I don’t see why this would be the case. They offered Darvish $100 million while Mauer’s salary was still on the books.
  20. I’ll be honest—not as satirical as you may think. The question is whether or not Millennials are ruining Twins Daily.
  21. I’ve said it before, but I simply don’t understand the infatuation with trading important pieces off a 100-win roster. They have plenty of prospects to trade instead.
  22. I wouldn’t mind if they brought him back, although he definitely shouldn’t be the only starter they sign. Based on nothing but a gut feeling, I think he’ll wind up with the Cubs.
