  1. RE24 is a good stat as well. 'Unlike wRAA, wRC, or Batting Runs, RE24 is context-dependent and assigns more credit for hits with men on base than with the bases empty. With league average set to 0, hitters with positive RE24 are creating more runs than we would expect given the situations they have been placed in and pitchers with positive numbers are preventing more runs than average given the situations in which they have been placed. On the hitting side, RE24 is a measure of how well hitters are capitalizing on their opportunities while also not assigning extra credit (like RBI) to hitters who happen to come to the plate with men on base very often.' 'RE24 is valuable because it provides an answer to a different question than context-neutral run values like wRAA, wRC, and Batting Runs for hitters. If you want to know how frequently a batters hits a single or a double and how valuable his performance would have been in a neutral context, one of the other run value statistics is your best bet. Those stats tell you what happened in the batter’s box. RE24 tells you how what happened in the batter’s box impacted the context of the inning.' http://www.fangraphs.com/library/misc/re24/
  2. I think they'll offer him another contract as a player. Then again, I've always thought they'd do that,
  3. The idea that Gibson is near Ace category is premature at best.
  4. I'm not sure it would have mattered and I'm not sure, when the season is all said and done, that our pitching is going to be revealed as much better or even significantly better than our pitching staffs of the recent seasons. They are 11th in FIP in the AL, which is, at present a good improvement and we should enjoy it, but it's early still. Let's not jump the gun and think Allen, or Molitor for that matter, have been miracle workers. I'm going to enjoy the ride and stop trying to use 1/4 of a season to justify or confirm beliefs of the old staff.
  5. I imagine so. Hard to believe it could get lower. Really only one way to go at this point.
  6. The poster of the games played stat went back to 2006. Mauer stopped being primarily a catcher in 2011. That's a good chunk of change to affect that average games played stat. He played 147 games and had over 600 PAs in 2012 and is looking at playing 150 or so games this year unless Molitor keeps resting him against pitchers he's been doing well against (Sale). And now that I mentioned that, we didn't even talk about how Gardy's lineup management affected his games played stat. And if you get a concussion, like he did the year after he played 147, is that really a reflection on your durability? Anyway, don't want to threadjack and turn this into another Mauer slamming/defending thread.
  7. Don't we also have to take position into account? Mauer's primary position till last year was catcher, catchers don't 162 and really shouldn't have their games played compared to other position players..
  8. I don't always drink beer, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis. Stay thirsty my friends
  9. oh, yeah, I forgot protocol on that. My bad. Sorry Halsey.
  10. I LOVE Lucky charms. Those and Frosted Flakes. The 10 or so times I eat cereal in a year, those will be the ones I eat.
  11. I disagree. It was almost caught. As a runner, in that situation, it's better just to take the change on getting thrown out at 2B than to have it caught and then get doubled off at 1B (two outs instead of one). But whatever.
  12. he's being shifted to pull nowadays though due to his approach early in the season, right? Or is that just in the IF. In any even, he's pulled more than he's gone opposite field this year, I believe.
  13. You and Bert would have so much fun talking about Michigan
  14. he was in a no-win situation there. If he goes halfway and it's caught he's doubled off 1st.
  15. Pebbles dipped in fruit juice.
  16. it's all about the wheat. accept no corn substitutes.
  17. I never got commissioned :-)
  18. complaining about complaining. Irony, party of one! :-)
  19. Sale won't make it to the 13th.
  20. This year, Mauer is 5 for 9 against Sale. So he gets the day off.
  21. ARod was a very good shortstop who got moved because a poor shortstop, golden boy Jeter, was reluctant to do what was best for the team and give up his spot to the much better defensive player, move the 2B where his skills were better suited, and press on (remember, Cano wasn't in the picture when they got ARod).

  23. The RBI stat itself, by itself, doesn't tell you how a guy hit with men on base. In fact, if there's a guy at 1B, and the batter gets a hit and and that guy on 1B doesn't score, there is no RBI. The guy on 1B falls under the 'men on base' category, but the batter didn't get an RBI. So how does RBI measure how well that guy hit with men on when he got no RBI? BA/OBP/SLG% with RISP measures how well someone with with RISP. You can get an RBI while grounding out to 2B, he didn't hit well with RISP, but he got one.
  24. I went out of my way to say it was a severe short sample size, and he beat the shift on the hit, which he should get some credit for. Again, I don't overly care about the RBI stat (actually, practically not at all), my post was talking about how he performed in those situations (men on and men is scoring position) in regards to OPS relative to the league. RBI isn't part of OPS, so knock him for getting 3 RBI, fine, but that's more a shot on overvaluing the RBI as a way to evaluate a player than anything else, not a shot in how he performed with men on or men with RISP.
  25. Mauer's got an sOPS+ (which is OPS + relative to the league) of 158 with men on (and 175 with RISP which might be more applicable since we are talking about RBI). Remember league average is 100. So, while I'd disagree with the idea that Mauer has only been a bit better with men on, I'd agree with the part that it can't last because it's so high. And we need to remember, severe short sample size. It's only 52 PAs.
