  1. RBI is a stat that is very much dependent on other people's performance and wRC+ tells us how well a player created runs in relation to the rest of the league. It measures what has happened and how valuable that player was at creating runs. And Mauer has very often been a good example of how RBI is a bad stat to judge performance. This year it's just being done in the opposite way. But we clearly disagree, and that's okay.
  2. or he was in the bathroom :-)
  3. Hardly an issue on TD alone. Pretty much any board this is the case and, in fact, quite often in the real world too. It's just more noticeable and forceful being able to do it with anonymity.
  4. The difference is Rick Anderson :-) ::::Ducks for cover::::
  5. Hicks has been playing outstanding defense. He may or may not have misplayed a ball. No defender is perfect (though Andrelton Simmons is pretty close).
  6. Tulo was the best shortstop by a mile coming into this season and he's having a slow start. Unless he's fallen off a cliff, he'd be a vast improvement on our team and most teams. In fact, even if he only averaged 120 games before having his annual injury, 120 games of Tulo and 42 games of others still makes that combo shorstop situation in the game.
  7. As a stand alone stat, I pretty much never look at RBI. That's how little I think of that stat as a way to evaluate performance.
  8. Back to topic, the more people get on base, the better chance a team has to score. A team only gets 27 outs, it's advantageous to have a pretty good percentage of not making outs (OBP). Last year, the top 5 teams in OBP in the AL were the top 5 teams in runs scored in the AL.
  9. If you just look at RBI and runs scored you miss something. Let's say there's one out and a guy walks. The next guy gets a single and the guy goes from 1st to 3rd. The next guy creates an out with a fly ball but it's deep enough to score the guy. The guy who got the hit gets no credit in the RBI or run scored category, but he was instrumental in creating that run.
  10. Or we can use wRC+. It's about creating runs. IMO, OPS doesn't give enough value to OBP. So yeah, it's a dirty stat that comes close to telling the right story, but there are better ones. wRC+ is one of them as is RE24.
  11. His FIP this year is 4.58. His last three years as a Yankee: 4.58, 4.56, 4.50. Last year, his FIP was 2.65. One of those things is not like the others :-)
  12. Mike B can be pretty funny sometimes.
  13. He's basically reverted back to what he was his last three years with the Yankees (with obvious exceptions like less KS and less BBs). It's why we can't assume one year that is out of whack with normal performance should be expected to be repeated by any player. It's why many predicted negative regression by him and were unpleasantly surprised he got extended after only one good season in the last four.
  14. Pelfrey: 7 hit batters, 4.13 FIP Gibson: 4 HBP, 4.40 FIP Hughes: 1 HBP, 4.58 FIP May: 1 HBP, 3.11 FIP FIP Nolasco: 1 HBP, 2.80 FIP
  15. In today's age with 5 man rotations, expanded bullpens, and no increase in the amount that a team can have on the active roster, it's hard to carry one dimensional players.
  16. Curious on your thoughts concerning Kepler. When might we see him?
  17. Is it sad that I miss Cristian Guzman? He's the last Twins shortstop, besides the one year of Hardy, that I really enjoyed watching play the spot.
  18. That's a pretty long TOP 10 list you got there. There are three types of people in the world, those who can count, and those that can't Just funnin' with ya, Nice post. And nice to see it come from someone who has see quite a few of these guys live.
  19. Now THIS is a fantastic post!
  20. I’d like to take a moment to identify some of the positive things currently going on with this club: -Hunter has been hitting very well and at least some fans and players think his vibe has been instrumental in the Twins ability to perform in optimal situations. -Molitor has also been credited, by many, with his ability to get the most out of the guys. -Mauer has been hitting really well with RISP. -Dozier continues to improve. -Plouffe continues to improve. -Hicks has been playing exceptional defense. -Some of our young guys are getting valuable experience that will hopefully help us in the future and more seem to be getting close. -Our pitching staff, as a whole, has been significantly better than they were the last four years. And most importantly, as a whole, we are winning, which I think all Twins fans can say we are very happy about. It’s fun to watch a game and expect us to be competitive. I’m sure I’ve just touched the tip of the iceberg, but there are some positive things to focus on. Thoughts? BTW, these might be some positive things to write threads about?
  21. I don't think they will trade us too many impact players :-)
  22. So a good way to counter all those 'Sky is falling down' articles and threads is to write positive articles and threads about the players and the team. Certainly have a lot of stuff to work with right now to make that happen. Maybe one about Molitor's impact, Hunter's impact, and so on and so forth. Seems this would be a much better way of countering all the sky is falling down articles and threads than writing yet another post that's sole purpose is to tell other Twins fans how to be fans and to get over themselves.
  23. I wouldn't use it. I'm not afraid of other people expressing their opinions, even if they disagree with mine. We are all Twins fans and should have the right to be fans the way that works for us without being ignored or slammed for it as long as we are civil about. I always try to be, but admittedly, I don't always succeed in portraying that civility properly. Debating/discussing the issues on this team, whether it be in good times (which we all enjoy, BTW) or bad times, should be encouraged.
  24. I'm as big of a Mauer defender as there is because, hey, what a talent, but he's been bad with the bat this year, overall. He can't even blame a bad BABIP because his is .325. Even with the RBI, he's been below average, overall, in creating runs. Now, he does have a fantastic history which is likely why he gets a pass from some over some younger players because he's proven he can do it in the majors over a larger time period and they haven't. Some people expect him to eventually pull out of this because of it and because it's hard to believe someone who was doing so well as recently as mid 2013 has fallen off so steeply. He may, and he may not.
