  1. How is saying great #3 an oxymoron. You'd be comparing his performance (FIP) against league average #3 in the same way you'd be comparing his numbers to league average #2 pitchers when you say he's a good #2. His numbers would be great compared to other #3s. And let's not undervalue what a consistent #3 pitcher in the league is worth, especially when he throws 200 IP and sports a FIP in the mid 3s. That's a quality asset. As far as your comment between FIP and ERA, I don't know why you'd believe that 800 IP would be the cutoff (and he has less than that as a starter anyway) and/or why it means anything in the context of our conversation. Since he's been a starter he has done very well in the context of FIP, which I believe is a much better indicator of performance from year to year than ERA is.
  2. His ERA is 4.67, but his FIP is 3.66 and he hasn't had a FIP over 3.77 since the year before he became a regular starter. And, honestly, I haven't heard anyone say he's a top 10 pitcher, or even a top 20 pitcher. What he is a quality pitcher capable of being a good #2 or great #3. Consistently.
  3. Hunter says a lot of things :-) And I'm sure, in this case, he would see more. Assuming Buxton actually gets on base, which he needs to prove he can before giving him the more PAs of any player on the team.
  4. He's hitting much better with no one on base as a whole this year, period. Dozier's RBI numbers have also been hurt by batting .236 with RISP and .250 with men on base. His OPS in both situations in the high .770s as opposed to his OPS with no one on in the 900s. Dozer is thriving batting 1st this year. .280/.355/.580.
  5. I have no idea why it would actually matter and I'm not sure one game proves anything. If Buxton had gone o-fer, it also wouldn't have proven anything. 'Better still, Brian Dozier seems to like it when there's somebody on base before he cranks a ball over the fence.' Only 3 of Dozier's 14 HR this year are with men on base. Overall, Dozier is hitting much better with no one on base than he is with runners on base..
  6. I hope it is, that's smart. BTW, he's seeing just under 4 pitcher per PA.
  7. I only know because about 6 weeks or so ago I looked and he had gone to LF much less than to center or RF. before that, like the first month or so, it was even more extreme. He barely went to LF at all. Now his LF trajectory has just squeaked over his RF trajectory by 3 PA. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=mauerjo01&year=2015&t=b
  8. I think he's currently performing as our best player, for sure. Not sure what you are using to say he's our best run producer (I'm hoping wRC+, best run creator), but he has hit a lot of extra base hits this year. I think the top 3 of your proposed lineup will be our regular future top 3. Probably 2016.
  9. I think we will be able to do better than a .340 OBP guy in the future, but right now seems Dozier is our best choice for leadoff.
  10. He has been going opposite field more and the results are nice to see.
  11. 'Based on your comment, I'm assuming then that you feel that the HOF manager is 99.9% insane?' HOF player, rookie manager (never managed anywhere until this year) ;-)
  12. You've gotten to the point where the same nonsense being spewed over and over in every broadcast by Bert and Richard has finally just become chirping.
  13. I've been saying for a few years now, since I first saw him play, that he reminds me of Eric Davis. Then I heard KLaw said the same thing, which cracked me up. I hope Buxton is a healthy version of Eric Davis. That guy, when healthy, was awesome!
  14. They won't and they shouldn't.
  15. Not trying to nitpick, but how has Hughes earned a long leash? Is it because of what he did in 2014? I ask because this year he is performing way more like the Phil Hughes Baseball has seen this decade. 2014 was the weird blip.
  16. I think it was Pete Rose. (though he was a manager).
  17. The FBI is responsible for investigating federal crimes. This is a federal crime. The idea that things that happen in baseball by teams and players isn't important just because it's a game we watch is a strikingly strange stance to take, but we see this stance all the time. It's okay for players to take steroids, and for people to give it to them. It's no big deal. It's not okay for us mere humans, but okay for them and not worth the time to investigate. It's okay for one huge company to hack another, because the companies are sports organizations, but any other types of companies, throw the hammer! I'm not sure how much privilege people in entertainment should be afforded, but shouldn't it stop somewhere short of excusing them of federal crimes or major crimes in general? Baseball is a game we watch, but MLB is a huge financial industry and everyone involved should be subject to the laws that everyone else is subject to.
  18. What is considered a solid pitcher? Because what he's doing this year is in-line with what he did in 2011, 2012 and 2013. 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2015 FIPs all start with 4.5. This is more like the pitcher he is than the one we saw last year.
  19. But yes, the voting should only be opened, at most, a month before the All Star game.
  20. I think I laid out why it's really not a big deal regardless of that.
  21. yeah, that -11 career UZR at 3B includes the years he was learning the brand new position for him. He's at 9 runs saved since 2014 at the position. He's greatly improved.
  22. Hanley Ramirez who played shortstop, then 3B, is horrific out there in LF. I mean, comically bad.
  23. only if we stop looking at the actual numbers.
  24. How under-rated is Dozier? Today's Fangraphs chat: Comment From hscer How many of the current top 6 second basemen in 2015 WAR do you think you could name? Dave Cameron: Kipnis, Gordon, Panik, Wong are easy. Is Travis still in that mix, despite a month on the DL? Espinosa, maybe? Peterson?
  25. Hunter has been an ever so slightly below average overall RF this year (WAR). Averagish offensively (tied for 15th out of 27 in wRC+), well below average defensively (20th out of 22 in DRS). We have worse problems than him at this point.
