  1. When everyone throws harder, it will be easier to adjust to. It's why the changeup is an effective pitch. There is a limit to how fast humans can throw a baseball. This is self-fixing. So we had too many homeruns, the league intervened to change the game, which made the game worse...and your solution is to ask the league to intervene again? And it will become non-existent again, if given time. Players will adapt to hit the other way. They'll stop selling out for power and go for contact instead. None of this is to say I'm opposed to rule changes--I actually think they make a lot of sense. I simply think we need to be careful about what we decide to change, as every change will undoubtedly have unintended consequences.
  2. They are the same thing--they are both fundamental re-writings of the rules of baseball. Locking defenders into having to start a play at certain spots has never been a thing in baseball history. Moving the mound has been done, but just two years ago we were talking about the onslaught of homeruns turning games into homerun derbies. The game is cyclical, and we don't need to introduce sweeping changes every time there's an aspect of the game we don't like.
  3. I'm in favor of banning the strikeout. It's not fun to watch, it doesn't add to the experience. And then consider starting every inning with the bases full to reduce the advantage pitchers have in the game right now.
  4. I don't think Rocco is incompetent, I just don't think he's particularly good. Is it all his fault? No. Will he be the one who has to wear it? Yes, as has been true for almost all of baseball history, save the legends. I don't think it's ridiculous to watch a team consistently fail at the fundamentals, and wonder if it might have something to do with the coaching staff not emphasizing them (or at least not emphasizing them enough). That is what the poster you quoted said; "It is very possible that Rocco pays more attention to analytics than he does to fundamentals". He's not asserting a fact, he's tossing out a potential explanation for the poor fundamental play this team has exhibited for most of the season. If this message board can no longer be used to propose hypotheses around the actions, seen and unseen, of the Twins organization, it will become a dull place indeed.
  5. Eh, I think the plan is sound, just not foolproof. It's pretty hard to have a foolproof plan in MLB. Look at the bullpen ERA ranks below; 2011--30th 2012--17th 2013--14th 2014--21st 2015--21st 2016--26th 2017--22nd 2018--22nd 2019--10th 2020--6th 2021--25th Until this year, Falvey had been able to improve the bullpen every year except 2018, and without handing out big deals in free agency. I think Falvey is a smart guy, and so I hope he'll adjust, and try to supplement his preferred method of building a bullpen (finding undervalued veterans he can fix) with some other methods as well.
  6. Just one, but it takes 2 days, because first they have to compose 100 couplets reflecting on the deeper meaning of light and dark.
  7. Paul Molitor was a vastly superior player to Baldelli--did you think he was a good manager who coached his teams up? There is an enormous fallacy in thinking that just because someone did one task at the highest level they will be able to do a different task in a related field at the highest level. It's like thinking the best car mechanic in the world would somehow be the best car designer in the world--maybe he would. But I doubt it.
  8. Your lower paragraph here would seem to contradict your assertion in the top paragraph (emphasis added). What evidence do you have Falvey was lazy? He signed/acquired a number of new arms for the bullpen--the fact that Robles is the only one that has kinda sorta maybe worked out is an indictment of his plan, not his effort.
  9. Ummm...why is Cruz batting here? We don't need more runs, he has a sore wrist, and you're going to be taking him out in the bottom of the 9th anyways. This is incomprehensible by Rocco right here.
  10. Garlick would like a word with all those apoplectic he made the team over Rooker.
  11. Just awful. If he doesn't swing and foul off that high 2-2 pitch, he can take that for the walk.
  12. It will be interesting to see if Cruz values the tie over the lead here.
  13. The Twins last regular season game is scheduled for October 3, which is the same day that Oktoberfest ends. So barring a season-ending injury, no, he won't be home.
  14. Your basses joke made me think of a joke my dad used to tell--see below. The Boston Symphony recently performed Beethoven's Ninth symphony which is a wonderful piece that has a part near the end in which the bass violins do nothing. So, the bassists snuck offstage, out the backdoor, and next door to the local pub for a drink. After quickly gulping down a few stiff drinks, one of them checked his watch and said, 'Oh no, we only have 30 seconds to get back!' Another bassist said, 'Don't worry, I tied the last page of the conductor's score down with string to give us a bit more time. We'll be fine.' So, they staggered and stumbled back into the concert hall and took their places just as the conductor was busily working on the knot in the string so he could finish the symphony. Someone in the audience asked his companion, 'What's going on? Is there a problem?' His companion said, 'This is a critical point - it's the bottom of the Ninth, the score's tied, and the bassists are loaded!'
  15. Agreed. When you throw tradition out by having backup catchers throwing 46 MPH softballs, you can't expect the other team to continue to respect tradition. Even if that was some back-end bullpen guy throwing 86, I still don't have a problem with swinging 3-0, but the whole "respect your opponent and the game" thing does not hold water when Tortuga is pitching.
  16. Donaldson has the 4th highest OBP on the team; the three ahead of him are Buxton, Gordon, and Refsnyder. I don't think anyone would be excited about moving Donaldson down in the lineup for Gordon or Refsnyder.
  17. The Series Win stat is inaccurate--The Twins took 2 of 3 from KC in the April 30-May 2 series, crushing them 9-1 and 13-4 on Friday and Saturday, while getting crushed 11-3 on Saturday.
  18. Berrios doing all he can to torpedo his trade value.
