  1. Three points from various posts: Sano takes a lot of pitches, including what seems to be an awful lot of good looking called third strikes. Protection? Miggy had one or both of of the Martinez behind him, IIRC. That's a lot of protection. I am not sure Plouffe and Rosario strike that amount of fear into the hearts of the mound opponents. IF I had my druthers, I would prefer Sano in the 4 hole. But every time I try and fashion a lineup like that, I can't find anyone to hit 3. It's been a problem for the Twins for a long time, a pure 3 hitter.
  2. "There will be more coming"? Not exactly a rallying cry for our new RF. But regrettably true, nonetheless!
  3. I watched it a couple times, and when they ran a mid inning fast recap, the closeup seemed he was off line of where the ball landed. That said, if he would have caught it, I think most of TD would have had to have their foot medically removed from their mouth. But a good defensive player could have got it. I imagine he will catch the common stuff, but the tough stuff will negate some of his offensive production. I still think an injury will end it long before ability, or the lack thereof does.
  4. HEY be careful, those people behind you are all driving the wrong way!
  5. They are giving the second launch key and the last 27 digits of the code to Brian. Even if they could find him in ND he won't remember all those numbers!
  6. Tommorrow the Twins will announce that due to the rain delay the BP is overtaxed and they are going with 13 pitchers.
  7. I have already made it through my fifth! I think I will try a litre next!
  8. Skip the liquor store, and be home by the second inning!
  9. Proof reading can on occasion be carried to an extreme!
  10. How do they intend to stop the rain? If I can find out, I may get my driveway in tomorrow after all!
  11. you could buy 4 clocks, and line them up on your desk. Be sure and label them. Otherwise if the cleaning lady gets them out of order, you could end up 4 hours late for a meeting someday!
  12. If there is a 50% chance it's going to rain, and a 50% chance it's not going to rain, what is the percentage that it will do one or the other?
  13. It's going to be interesting and fun. And will leave a plethora of topics to discuss. Off the top of my feeble head are two. We have finally entered the offensive, damn the SO's, full speed ahead era. Which sadly ended about the time drug testing became pervasive. When batting average, bullpens and Piranahs were cheap we had the market cornered. Power was expensive, we had little. Now the exact opposite. Power arms, and defense are expensive, and HR's (see Plouffe) are cheap, and we are the '27 Yankees. Coincidence? Holmes did not believe in them, and neither do I. I do agree with Nick, the pieces are mostly in house. Will the FO be flexible and proactive and move more of the blocking mediocrity out of the way, or will money and security rule. There is a difference between being a General Manager, and a General Accumulator!
  14. That's pretty brutal. It's also interesting that I see people wanting Plouffe traded and Sano moved to 3rd. I get that, but the market for 3rd basemen wasn't high to begin with this offseason and Plouffe is not viewed outside of the Twins organization the way he is viewed by the Twins." >>>>>>>> It also says something about your lineup if Plouffe is your cleanup hitter. "Trevor Plouffe hitting cleanup on a playoff baseball team" is not a statement I ever imagined, nor still do!
  15. One thing that seems to me to be a problem is that Perk has only really excelled in the true closer roll. He has often struggled in other situations. Concentration? I don't know, but it might be hard for him to slide down to a non closer.
  16. You have made this season sound incrediblily easy. I am not sold on 87 wins, but I agree with some points. I think Buxton will end up just fine. The learning curve will cause consternation, but he will survive and eventually excel. Sanos season will depend on his legs. If he pulls or twists something, whether or not he can catch a fly ball is a moot point. Last year, when he "couldn't" play defensively he was the DH, this year Park is there. Which brings us to Park. He still hasn't faced a concerted effort to get him out. That's going to be the test. The math bothers me. If you SO that often against A level pitching why are you going to improve moving up 4 spots? The starting pitching? Meh? Average, pitchers, average results. The BP? I feel the sam about the defense. One standout defensive player, Buxton, on a team with extreme PTC. That short leash you mentioned will make or break the season. Wins in April and May actually do count. The team is headed in the right direction, slowly. But if you take a team of average players, and expect them to exceed expectations every year, thats not reasonable. And the tendencies of this FO to sit on its hands until mid June will not help if that plan goes awry.
  17. By now it seems obvious that what the manager wants as far as roster decisions has little impact, probably on most clubs, but surely in MN. This was true during the Gardenhire era also. The monetary and contractural considerations override almost everything else. It's why, when Molitor tells Duffey it's his job to lose, and makes it clear he sees Sano in LF, those comments are messages to the FO, which seem to have little or no bearing on roster decisions. GM are not going to spend 12M a year on a pitcher, and let the manager turn him into a long reliever. A move like that is above Molly's pay grade!
  18. To me the word competition would denote a contest between two persons, or entities. While these parties might not be of equal talent, the rules should be equitable. The operative word here is "should". If Duffey, Nolasco was a prize fight, Duffey as the challenger would not have to just be ahead on points, he would have had to beat Nolasco into the canvas. I don't think I have ever seen this much suspense over something that, short of injury, had no other obvious outcome. Throw in the fact that the Nolasco camp already raised a fuss over a BP slot, that moving Ricky to the pen meant likely losing Tonkin, and that 12M long relievers are pretty rare, and this was virtually preordained!
  19. Suzuki had better be a first half bust or the Twins will sign him to another two year extension! My bust is more defined. (That did not come out right) I think it will be The Sano Experiment! Not necessarily Miguel, I think he will hit, and hit well. But defensively he will be past bad for either of two reasons. A lack of commitment to the glove side of that position, or injury. You can get injured anywhere, but this move hiked the percentages considerably.
  20. When you stack your roster with hit first/field second corner players, it is a conscious decision. It's not bad luck, or unavoidable. My basic philosophy of baseball for years has been: You can't beat teams to death with your bats. Hitting comes and goes, often, and quickly. Pitching first, defense second, hitting third! The Twins are set up completely backwards.
  21. "What would "The Maestro" have had to do to survive camp? 4 spots! He ain't a catcher, or an IF'er, he isn't a big stick, nor is he a utility guy like Santana. And who would really move Arcia to keep him? There are certainly years where there is legitimate competitions for spots in ST. But with the exception of the lower half of the BP, I don't think anyone can seriously think any others existed this year!
  22. By the time Gardy was let go, it was time. That said, Gardy didn't (always) get what he wanted. He was quoted numerous times about his wish to have certain players stay on the roster who were shipped out. I don't know how much influence a manager has in this era, but there is no doubt that the GM makes the final call. The field roster could have been announced in January. Any doubts about Buxtons position were erased when they put Sano in RF. The only mini surprise was that we did not have the annual " reunion tour" with Benson or Mastro being this years guest. But the option issue on Santana and Arcia likely settled that. I am pretty sure the rotation will turn out the same way. One guy is a big buck vet, who has to avoid pitching himself off the rotation, the other guy is a rookie, with options, who has to pitch himself on. Spending too much time analyzing performances can sometimes be fruitless. Some time has to be spent viewing the history of the guy making the decisions, his past is your prologue!
  23. "Ryan dispelled the notion that the two are competing head-to-head" >>>>>>>. Meaning either Milone is still on the bubble? Or Ryan is moving May back to the rotation? Or he felt a need to test either our sense of humor, or our intelligence? Personally I'm going with intelligence!
  24. 2)? Where did you read/hear Molitor say that? It's not that I doubt it, because it's always been my conjecture that it's not the Twins Way to go high enough to get a sought after FA style player. Ergo, they did, and now what the bleep do we do with him? Of course that's just me thinking from moms basement!
