    He can play there is no doubt. While his success at every level has followed a seeming adjustment period, the one up here lasted a little longer. Probably not that unusual. He is truly gifted. I do hope that he quits running into the OF fence. The knack of finding the fence, THEN jumping is still in the development phase. He won't win any MVP's face down on the warning track.

    And my point was that the powers that be don't have to employ him, nor do the customers have to like him. But since they do employ and cheer for a wide variety of felons already, not employing someone who simply doesn't stand for the Anthem seems sort of strange. Btw, Tim Tebow likely couldn't carry KP helmet.

    No one really pitches in hard off the plate. Good grief, Toronto swung like it was a slow pitch league. Why not? No one was gonna move them off the plate. Catchers have to give a route to the plate, and if you don't think computers are sterile, what exactly would be. Whoops, I forgot about complaining about a call. I didn't say it was entertaining. My point should have been more clearly made. Players kick balls, they run bases stupidly, they swing at a ball that bounces in the dirt, but then they, and the fans wonder why an umpire calls a strike the could or may not be 1/2" or less of the corner. I will add this though. If we go to computerized strike zones, then let's do the whole thing. Base calls, foul balls, home runs, everything. We use the replay for calls on the bases now, why waste time with challenges, lets just let technology do it. I prefer to keep umpires, but if Joe West was driven from the field, my view might change. .

    It's pretty subjective. But, to me it means will the game become even more sterile. We no longer pitch inside. Catchers have to stay off the plate. We are looking for perfection, and if we ever achieve it, it won't be a game. Players swing at pitches that bounce in the dirt, and complain about a pitch that may or may not have clipped 1/2" of the corner. I would like to see umps continue to be a part of the game. If it takes a guy in the clubhouse to review a play on slo mo before the manager drops his hankie, and then we run to the headsets, we might as well use the puter for all calls. Ugh. No that doesn't define "better", but it does define my better.

    That's exactly what happens to teams that need offense to win. Of the big three, pitching, defense and offense, the most variable by far is offense.

    Say this does improve, or perfect, balls and strikes. Will this make the game better, or just the strike zone?

    If one HAS to stand for the National Anthem or show visible deference to the flag, then that which they represent doesn't actually exist. If you check the Webster, the word "freedom" doesn't have qualifiers. That's not to say one has to approve or endorse protests or displays. But, such disapproval should not be couched in terms hiding ones real thoughts. No one actually thought crossing the Edmund Pettis bridge was a safety hazard. They just didn't like the people doing it. And anyone suggesting that KP is not playing in the NFL for any other reason than his protests is not being realistic.

    There is definitely a generational divide in place here. Analyticals seem to view DM as a Teradactyl. And those who judge curve balls by the Pascual standard seem to view DM as an icon of the way managers used to be. AKA the good old days. Where you sit on whether Dougie should have gotten the boot is definitely influenced by which side of the fence you stand on. The good old days guys have to remember that metrics is here to stay and is a useful tool in analyzing players and there niche in the game. The metrics guys have to accept that there is way more involved. At least I hope so. It's going to be very hard for a laptop dressed in a Twins cap and uniform to signal for a pitching change without arms! All those numbers have to be taken into context with the situation. A spread sheet can tell you that bunting results in such and such a percentage of success vs swinging away. But someone has to parse this with that days game, their pitcher, your staff, standings, who's on deck, who's bunting, who's playing third, the score, the inning, and maybe even the weather. That ain't all gonna be on that spreadsheet. Some guys have that knack, and some don't. And you won't find that distinction on any spreadsheet either.

    On the matter of whether DM should have been told the rationale for his dismissal, I think it important to remember that he said HE wasn't told why. He never mentioned the general public, or TD posters. While I completely agree with Brian on wanting and finally getting a change in the FO, that does not mean I agree with every move they make. I have liked their general approach, but I did not like the handling of this matter. The Twins are in an entertainment business, with public perception a huge factor. IMHO they mishandled the dismissal of a long term employee. That opinion is not based on whether DM should have been let go but by how he was. But that's water under the dam. On another matter I found it odd, it it's true, that DM and Falvine had only spoken once all year? And this over the suspension? And I think on the phone? Does this mean Falvine did not visit the MiLB team all year? Or does it mean they did, and didn't even stop to say hi to one of the guys instrumental in developing their future? IF this is true, that's pretty hands off. I have had a lot of jobs, and I cannot think of one where I could not, or did not, converse with a management level several notches above me.

    I am well aware of that. But since Falvine had neither the decency, courtesy, or fortitude to call or visit a long time Twins employee and let him go in person, I naturally assumed they would again delegate (abdicate) authority!

    I am surprised no one has posted an opinion from one of the more popular columnists in town. http://www.startribune.com/minnesota-twins-on-doug-mientkiewicz/444852373/ I am not at all stunned he was let go, if any of the things about his lack of analytical love is correct. It's the way this FO is headed. I can only hope that if the Twins have a winning record, and that if the handling of younger players has no influence on whether you keep your job or not, they have Stiel make the same call to Molitor in early Oct. At least we have a precedent. Nothing in Dougie B.'s history or personality would suggest he was going to take this well. But I agree with those who say that Falvine should have had the balls to call him. He has been around a long time, and while he doesn't need a statue on the plaza, that was a stunning lack of class not to sit down with him and tell him why they were moving on. And if the statement that he the only heard from Falvine once all year is true, that's sort of odd also. While it may be true that Dougie could have handled it with a little less noise, I really don't think Falvine earned that respect with how this was handled.

    Not particularly surprising when you consider Molitors long history of "veteran deference".

    2 hits? A bunt, that went under his glove and that EE did not exactly attack and a GB which hit him in the foot? Colon gave up more wood than that in getting 3 outs in the first inning. I am not a big Molitor fan, but it was time to pull Colon. The swings were carefree and vicious, the outs were very loud. Sooner or later he was gonna get dinged. The last 3 innings were the cumulative effect of having shorter starts and relying on the same few RP's each game. Sooner or later they need a night off. My concern isn't that he did not use them, it's that he sometimes uses them when behind in games and then doesn't have them as available as should be. That said, the team has had some good luck (Gordon mis playing TWO fly balls?) and last night the worm turned.

    I don't dispute anything you said. Pitching is at a low ebb, and baseball is starting to resemble slow pitch! . Nor would I care if Gibson gets 4m of JP's hard inherited cash. But I do want the Twins to aim higher, and if they keep Gibson, it's in a fall back position. A poster above said one can always trade a starting pitcher. Truer words were never spoken. In essence, if I keep him, I don't count him!

    I still think Gibson is still Gibson. And will return to the inconsistent KG of yore. I can see the team keeping him, it's not like our cup runneth over in the SP department. I could live with keeping Gibson, as long as I am not really counting on him. If he surprises me and becomes the KG of Sept, woopee! But I would hate to put any money on that bet. I just hope we don't pass on a real pitcher because of this little streak he is having. One should take a pause from the euphoria that is rampant over Gibsons last couple months. He hasn't exactly faced murderers row. He beat Toronto, a decent hitting team. The rest? Meh.

    Well luckily Rosario hit it over the fence, instead of off it, or else Mauer would still be standing on third. Some would have considered a PR appropriate with two out.

    It's not unheard of for a tall lanky power pitcher to finally get his mechanics in control later in a career and settle in. It's somewhat different for a PTC pitcher to do so. That said, it seems the biggest thing is his control is better in this streak. He is hitting the outside corner nicely. If ones belief that Gibsons value is in long relief, then it would be best to package him and move him. Long relief pitchers are simply failed starters eating decided innings. (Barring injuries) The Twins already have a plethora of those. If Gibson has truly turned the corner, good for him. But I would make next years plans with the idea he had not, and choose to be pleasantly amazed, than yet again horribly disappointed.

    I think I was misquoted! . Lol. But if you asked me today, I would still lean at the very most to .500 ball. I wasn't as worried about Sano at third as some, and I admit Polanco has exceeded expectations. I still don't think he would be my MLB SS, but he is not as bad as I thought he would be. And I think he will be a much better hitter than Dozier, sans the solo HR's. The OF, as long as they stick to the big 3 is as expected. The caveat was whether Molitor could resist sticking RG in the OF somewhere daily. The injury helped make that decision. But it's the pitching that confounds me. I know it is covered up by offense, but Jeez Louise that's a bad staff. The defense helps, but this pitching staff alone should guarantee a sub .500 season. The position players are ready to move up a notch, now they need the mound to pitch in.

    Considering we had a self inflicted and self described burnt out BP, I don't think I ever saw anyone manage? an inning in a more bizzare fashion? There are a lot of games left, sometimes when things go south you just let them go and move on to tomorrow. Lastly, some have pointed to his "dartboard" lineups as his embracement of analytics, but Molitors bunt phobia begs to differ.

    . You should just read the online version. They just announced a Elvis Sighting at the Cinnabun in Omaha. He was driving a white Caddy and wearing a pink Kimono. This whole thing has evolved into what so often happens. The message gets garbled by the personality of the messenger. There is no doubt that Sano is an awfully big man. Nor the fact that he is playing an IF position other than first base. Or the fact that he is going to have to work extremely hard to keep himself in condition for longevity and success. He does not possess a maintenance free body. But if that comes from LE3, Bernardino Miller, or heaven forbid Sid is one thing. Put Souhan or Ruesses name on the header, and we tend to get into the 9th page of a thread.

    I would tweak the rotation to set up my preferences. There is no sense in going to NY and getting your brains bashed in yet another time. My choices would be Santana, Santana, and then Santana. Oddly after those three it would be Colon. His stuff isn't as good as Berrios or Gibson's but he appears unflappable. Which will be a necessity in NY. Then Berrios. As for Gibson? He has been Kyle Gibson for years. Sooner rather than later he will return to Kyle Gibson.

    I always read where Turner was a MLB ready defensive catcher, and that Garvers bat was way ahead of his glove. I have not ever saw Turner catch, but it's not hard to see where he must have been better than Garver. The decision to again choose offense over defense at certain positions puzzles me. As for Perkins, either him or Molitor need to decide that he will not be any help this year. If he wants to continue his comeback next spring, go for it. But this ain't the time or place.
