  1. I am not quite as high on Park as others here. If he does adjust, a big if, then to hit 28 HR's he will have to hit them at an amazing pace in the second half. Kind of the anti Dozier! Expecting him to compete because Kang was passable is similar to saying the Nishy signing was going to work based on Ichiro! As for Berrios, I really hope they bring him up in May. But for both that to happen, and for four pitchers to win in double digits, something unTwin like will have to happen. They would likely have to move a starter pitching well, or eat a salary. The Twins move very slowly in the first months of a season, very slowly.
  2. Like the setup of the Twins offense will completely depend on what they do with Buxton, the pitching staffs big question is Nolasco. He is the elephant in the dugout. Since nothing historically says they will go to the lengths necessary to get rid of him, his presence disrupts the entire pitching roster. The same history says he will not be forced into the pen, but barring injury will be a SP. Failure will result in another convenient ailment, and off to the DL. Success will result in a conundrum. You couldn't trade him when he had no value, and now you can't trade a "valuable" member of the rotation. Inevitably the Twins will resort to there SOP fallback position! They will send Tonkin back to Rochester!
  3. I think Dozier is a decent second baseman. I know decent isn't a saber metric term, but it's close. I think his diving for everything except pop ups, makes his range appear greater than it is. His arm is average. He is aggressive, and never takes a play off. I do think he struggled coming up with poor throws on steals last year. There were definitely a few that got away. Hitting? Either he will have to change his approach, or he will have to square up an extremely high percentage of the very few FB up in the zone he sees. If neither happens, you will see far more of post ASG Dozier than you would like to. There was another post about HR's which seemed to indicate that he would replicate his last two years of high 20's HR's. I just can't see that happening.
  4. I agree wholeheartedly with everything but this. Their is a difference between the rosters and the starters. Plouffe is the only one who can reasonably solve the roster issue. Mauer cannot be traded. He can be cut, but that's not a reality worthy of discussion. You can reduce his AB's. But not his roster spot. Something often ignored is that the Twins lineup was so putrid last year that as much as I do not believe Mauer is a 3 hitter, I could not come up with another. Dozier? Plouffe? Sano? The HR were there, but for two of them only half the year. Sano might soon be though. But Dozier remains an all or nothing hitter, and truthfully despite Plouffes HR's, does anyone think he strikes fear in any pitcher? The DP's and SO's are too easily coerced.
  5. It will be interesting to see how he holds up physically if he ends up in the pen, which I am sure he will. Last year he had a few issues, which he claimed were pen related. But the real issue here isn't whether he belongs in the pen, or whether the Twins signed to many veteran starters. (They did). The issue is their refusal to deal with this roster crunch in a way that makes the team more competitive. And the continuing cow towing to veterans in roster decisions. See Pelfrey! May will be an improvement in the pen, but only at the expense of watching "The Usual Suspects" pitch.
  6. I truly hate seeing May go the the pen, but at the same time, given the current roster, it's likely the thing to do. Time will tell. It helps clear the jam in the beginning of the year. Of course so would have moving Pefrey there last year. I don't think Milone fits the pen, except for mop up. His stuff doesn't play well there. At the same time, he, more than anyone on the staff pitches at the whim of an umpire. He needs a big outside corner, and when it doesn't exist, he doesn't last long.
  7. If my wife was a baseball fan she would say "FINE"!
  8. I think unless Nolasco is a complete washout in ST, he will get far more innings than we expect. The Twins, and likely other teams, use the cost of the player in allocating playing time. And he cost plenty. I would also believe the FO would like to salvage just a little of the pride lost in this contract. As an aside, I still have a problem with the use of the term "depth" in referring to the pitching situation in MN. While I understand that depth can be synonymous with quantity, in this case I hope it's not being used to infer quality.
  9. Quite possibly the most sensible, simplest, and clearest analysis of the entire Sano, Plouffe issue.
  10. I like Sano, and I think Arcia needs a chance to recover. I also am ok with an offensive OF, but even for me, these two in the OF together is hard to envision. And impossible without Buxton between them. The only problem with the Twins signing a veteran 4th OF is they will play him in front of the youth. When you look at this roster, it's obvious what keeping Plouffe does. If Arcia had more trade value, even that would help, but he doesn't. And I still think that would end up as an Ortiz2. Sooner or later they have to do something. Following the usual plan of waiting for someone to get hurt, so you can send him to rehab, is not a plan!
  11. I can more or less agree with this, with these two exceptions. Ryan seems very slow to adjust to change, and there are non financial moves he makes and doesn't make that are consistent and puzzling. Mainly his distrust of younger players, and his over blown affection for safe middling vets.
  12. When we got married, we decided I would make all big decisions, and she would make all the little ones! It's been quite a few years, and it's hard to believe, but there still has not been a big decision to make! Speaking of little decisions, I just don't like the Sano to RF one. You can be that big, and have quick hands and quick feet, and get by at third. But to make athletic moves chasing sinking fly balls, and heaven forbid bouncing into an OF wall. At that size? I just am not sure that's gonna end well? What if he runs into the RF wall, and that idiotic flower pot overhead comes down?
  13. I am not as concerned with what we didn't do, as with what we might. I would have rather seen cash spent, for a shut down RP, adding instead of subtracting, than trade a good prospect. If I wake up and find a Rosario, Polanco, Kepler, or a high velocity reliever gone for two years of another control type RP I will flip. But I don't think we should be surprised. Keeping Fien sort of set the bar. And letting Jones go was more evidence that they talk velocity, but have yet to actually practice it. With strike outs come walks. That doesn't go over well in Twins Territory!
  14. I don't have a problem with them spending money, on a good FA, they have plenty. But I want them to take into consideration the long term effects it has on the roster. Does it block a good internal candidate? Is it just a move that is "safer" vs potential upside. As to your point on Ryan's hand being forced, I would be curious to know the percentage of roster moves mad in season that are injury related, vs talent related. My bet is its higher than one would imagine.
  15. You quote includes three points. And all are true, and have been for quite a few years, despite the roster position in question. While the current problem appears to lie in the construction of an efficient BP, your post touches on the real problem.
  16. Good piece. You put my thoughts into a more coherent post than I can. I think the big difference between now and in 2010 is that the Twins have too many corner IF-DH guys. In the Nishy situation they had one too many middle IF, and that was Hardy, and they dumped him. Leaving them with no options when Nishy was injured. In a way OTC was correct, it's Hot Stove time, and it's fun. But for this to turn out in a manner that makes sense to any semi knowledgeable observer, TR has going to have to makes some moves he isn't known for, such as eating contracts, trading a stable veteran, and possibly more youth in the BP. One thing is for sure though! No matter what happens, everyone here on TD will be very supportive!
  17. Sano can run for a big guy, very well. And he can throw. It just seems a really odd idea, to take a guy and try and teach him to play OF in the majors. Especially since they have options. They have tried it with Santana and Escobar, far more athletic players, with not too much success. I do know one thing, if they put him out there, he's going to have to stay there. Trading Plouffe, or a Park blowup will be the only thing that moves him.
  18. I appreciate the fact that there are only so many ways to say something! But in the May paragraph you used the word "depth" to describe the excess amount of 3,4, and 5 level pitchers on the roster. To me that is not depth, it's just too many long term, expensive to resolve contracts given to suspect veteran pitchers! . Now I agree depth is less wordy, but it extends the connotation of quality! In reality, continually adding these types of pitchers, is akin to attempting to dig yourself out of a hole with a shovel.
  19. I looked in the Webster, and found "He's better than Stauffer" in the section entitled Backhanded Insults!
  20. Very well put! We cannot put mediocre players on the field, and expect a contending result!
  21. There was no market. Once the Twins won the bid,it's a take it or leave it. He had to take it. He is almost 30, and he gets a shot at MLB. I would have done the same thing in a heartbeat. Parks decision was correct, based on the options he had.
  22. I don't always agree with"The Baggy", but on the issue of players like Fien I do. And while he might have used the term "cheaper" in his original missive, the tenor of the piece was that it is time for the Twins to remove some of the middling names on the end of the roster, and try to get better, Fien, and likely Nunez are not going to get better, Fien is probably going to get worse. This is a team with options, it's not berift of young talent.
  23. It's been my long time complaint, the safe, known mediocre is the better than the high upside, youthful unknown. Maybe it's just me, but if I know the player in question is not going to help take me to the next level, then I look at someone who could. Will he? I don't know! But I do know the other one won't! That's how you get better. Yes it's possible to get worse, but that's part of being in charge. Almost anyone can be average!
  24. That's what's odd here. If they don't trade Plouffe now, there doesn't seem to be a time when they will. That leaves one of those three on the bench, traded, or in Rochester. And means Arcia and likely Vargas is gone. It also means our biggest trade chip for pitching is off the table.
