  1. Without being critical to this post at all, I am always surprised by how reactive we are to immediate, current, and somewhat short term performances. We celebrate Hicks finally getting it, after having determined as recently as this spring that he is basically a failure. Now we, and again, I am not referring specifically to this poster, have determined that Santana and Arcia have little chance of succeeding. There are like rumblings about the offense of Buxton after approx 120 AB's. Which is 5% of the 2500 AB's many consider to be the demarcation line for evaluating a potential career. It took KC severl years for their young talent to mature into what it is today. They took their lumps, stuck with them, and have been rewarded. This is not going to happen overnight, or likely next year. As for the current SP, having 8 #3&4 starters is not the definition of depth I would consider a recipe for success!
  2. Last year when Dozier went into the HR hitting contest at the AS game should have been the first clue. The fact that he hits only one pitch, to one spot in the seats should have been another. It seemed to take pitchers longer than usual to figure out that of the 9 spots on a hit chart, he only consistently hits in two of them. Anyway, once they found out that he would not move the away stuff to right field, and had a hard time laying off the breaking ball, the results were fairly easy to forecast. He became in reality a better fielding version of Arcia. His problem was very succinctly summed up by the Chief, a regular TD contributor. His take: BD thinks he's a home run hitter, but hes not! I concur! Conditioning is always an easy unquantifiable excuse. If BD does not change his approach next year, look for post AS game numbers to be the norm.
  3. MVP Sano. Why? This teams offense was poor and getting worse when he arrived. It's been so long since we had a stick like this I don't think we knew what we were missing. Without him holding down the 4 hole this team would have been done two weeks ago. ROY.... Co winners. Duffy because without him, there would be no playoff game this evening. And Rosario, because he gave us a second above average defensive player in the OF, and had a lot of big hits. His strike zone discipline can be cringe inducing, but so can his triples to the opposition. Most improved. Hicks in a landslide. Escobar was the starting SS last year, and ended up the starting SS this year. Hicks was what last year?? Vs what this year. That's not even close. Most valuable pitcher. May. Pretty good starter, then moved to the bullpen for reasons that could be debated, but won't be here. Adjusted well and was the type of 8th inning guy we need, and likely still would be if his hip/back were healthy. Gibson a very close second. On a side note, Mays comments about his back a starter vs as a reliever might preclude his return to the pen next year.
  4. Since the Twins have an excess of healthy and high quality pitchers, I can see no reason for them not to initiate a bean ball war today! Besides none of the suspensions would likely be served until 2016!
  5. The thought Blair expressed above has nagged me for weeks. Everyone, me included expects this team to be markedly better next year. But why? This off season will give us a rare chance to build an excellent team for the future. But it's going to take some aggressive moves, a little imagination, spending some of the bosses money, and saying goodbye to some sacred cows and probably a young outfielder. Will it happen? Or will there be a weeping and knashing of teeth across the frozen tundra?
  6. If I wanted to listen to someone p*^s and moan over every call, I would listen to the Hawk. Dicks whining is getting a little old.
  7. Several years ago while driving through Cleveland from east to west, I decided to stay on I90 all the way through town to see what the central part of Cleveland looked like. Hmm Berlin circa 1945 comes to mind. To top it off, some jokester at the highway dept decided an interstate all the way through town was a waste of government resources, and the last part is a 4 and 6 lane divided city street. The good part, is that it made driving through Chicago on the way back far more enjoyable!
  8. I assume you are referring to Buxton? I agree with your observation, this has happened numerous times, and not to just a sub like Buxton or Nunez.
  9. Also, we are paying dealing for the FO aversion to velocity. I know they talk about finally "catching up with the Jones" as far as velocity goes. And they have drafted, and touted higher velocity pitchers. But they still keep sending the low 90's guys out there every day. High velocity pitchers strike out more people, and walk more people. It's the way it is. If you are going to wait for a guy who throws in triple digits, and paints the outside corner before you bring him up, then you are destined to watch Fien and Duensing for a long time.
  10. Agreed. He had more than one outing in the first half, where absolute rockets were right at someone. So this could be his BABIP is evening out. It had to be very low in the first half. Two other points. Perk can generally throw strikes like falling off a log, but hitting corners is not his forte. And, he has normally excelled in one situation. Ahead in the game by 3 or less (save) and starting the ninth inning. My memory tells me he has often struggled in other scenarios and low leverage situations.
  11. When I watch Molitor, I always wonder if he is enjoying himself. There were reports he wasn't sure if managing was for him, and I've wondered if he has resolved those qualms?
  12. Nice article. Talent helps, but remember some managers cannot manage talent. They won't let the talent excel at their strengths, and try and make it fit the managers vision/agenda. The single biggest thing a manager can do to ensure success is put his players in positions they can succeed in. I have nothing against Molitor, I just had hoped Dougie would have came in and injected some energy and excitement into a staid and stale baseball operation. It will be a window into Molitors self confidence if he allows his heir apparent to sit next to him in the dugout. Gardy certainly didn't want that.
  13. There are many excellent answers to that query, unfortunately any one of them will result in the loss of my highly valued TD membership! (And the secret decoder ring)
  14. It may be just me, but it does not appear that this epic WC chase is inspiring ticket sales?
  15. Sticking to tonight's music theme, wIll the Twins leave next week "fully loaded for Cleveland"? Or will they fail as the Fitz did, in Michigan? "A good crew, it's been good to know yah" ?
  16. No squirrel in his right mind would bother chasing a rabbit, when instead he could stop and check out a nut on a park bench!
  17. It seems to me that BB brief history is that he starts slow with the stick at every level and then adjusts. I imagine that is exactly what's happening here, possibly exacerbated by the pressure of a playoff push!
  18. Yes it does. Soft throwing non strike out pitchers. Semi athletic middle infielders. Playing Nishi and Shafer while we watch Hardy and Gomez on Sports Center? Signing an ancient OF in a rebuilding year, just to sell tickets? Not having a Catcher who can out perform Suzuki in the entire system? The talent is getting better, it has to when you draft that high for 4 years in a row. But the puzzling roster decisions remain. I hope Arcia is not added to that list.
  19. Totally agree. Another point, and one hard to quantify is Arcia is one of those players that does not fit into the "Twins Way". The Twins do not excell in dealing with "personalities". The Twins are going to need someone to protect Sano, and they really don't have anyone currently. One of the things that Sanos emergence has shown is the mostly undiscussed lack of a 4 hitter. The 3 hole discussion has been beat to death, but lost in that is that the Twins have not had a 4 hitter in a long time. Sano is that, but as he gets a reputation, he is going to see less and less good pitches with someone like Plouffe behind him. And that's where Oswaldo should be, if nothing else as a DH. His is young, and did not suddenly forget how to hit! Sadly I concur with you, Ryan will ship him, and we will watch highlights on Baseball Tonight for years!
  20. Totally agree. While it's great to see the Twins win last night, and his contribution to that win, it's cringe worthy, from the standpoint that a few more games like that, will have TR reaching for his checkbook! On a side note, Hunters comment that "it's been awhile since someone tested my arm" made me giggle! The guy at second had no business trying to stretch that, and the guy at the plate stumbled around third. I still put the odds at 80/20 TR cannot resist his veteran urge yet again!
  21. I know for a fact they are better outside. I had one in the living room, they are hard to catch! But tasty!
  22. buck needs rest he has played all those games in a row and he's pushing 23 pretty soon!
  23. I like how we upgraded the 5 hole!
  24. You're right, that was a cruel story! . Fortunately they discontinued this barbaric practice, or the instruction, "left turn Clyde" would not have had anywhere the same comedic (and jaw) impact!
  25. I might note that any speculation that Berrios will go north in March 2016 ignores TR, Twins history, and the logjam of large contracts to mediocre veterans. I might also add that if your perception that he was told he was in effect auditioning for a call up, pitched to these numbers, and then was left sitting, is factual it would explain some of the seemingly unexplained poor performances by certain players. Many Ryan promotions are injury driven. I am not sure Buxton would have appeared at all in Mpls. If not for Hicks getting hurt twice.
