  1. It will be nice to see some of these guys up here, and see some power arms in the pen. I don't know if Antony will survive the fall, frankly I hope he doesn't and they make some major changes, but the selling high of Nunez was a breath of fresh air. Maybe more breeze will follow. I know this piece is about pitching, but the Twins need to do something about basics. Last night, yet again, no one was covering second base on a throw. This operation seems to operate in an alternative universe from the rest of baseball.
  2. Nothing says more about this team, than having to bunty for a tie against................... Atlanta!
  3. I truly think if we can add a quality DH/1B player this winter we can make some noise next year!
  4. Why does one set up a cut off to the plate on a double with the runner on second, and if u do, where did the SS go? Hmm,m,,,,,,,,
  5. I agree, numbers are objective. I completely agree with your analysis and compilation. My point was not to dispute, but to agree by pointing out that the quality of the players in this orginization back your work. We are not getting high end results from the draft, and really haven't for quite some time. Basically, there are no exceptions to the rule.
  6. Nice work, thank you. And if you take away the numbers, and look at the players? In those 7 years the Twins have developed what? If you go by AS, Dozier is it. Some of that was from a blistering half of a year, and some from "someone has to go"! The rest were pre '08 picks, or obvious "has to go". So while 7 years does not allow for many AS selections, what of the day to day product. So far Kepler is the jewel. Sano could/would be if he decides he wants to put in the actual effort. I think Buxton will eventually succeed, I would be stunned if he does not. CF'ers seems our specialty. Pitchers, catchers, and middle IF are largely absent. For years, a team which publicly stressed pitching and defense, has not fielded a team with good pitching, catching or middle infielders. And what are supposed to be the core of our youthful pitching languishes in MiLB. It boggles my mind. Almost all team sports are won with defense. Yet we seem to continue to value offense disproportionately.
  7. Reusse today did not insinuate, he flat out said that Sano is currently only interested in hitting, wants to be a mega star, and does not consider defense a part of that goal. Currently they have had little luck changing that situation. Reusse also contends, and I tend to agree that Sano is the most impactful player they have had in ten years, since M&M. And that for this team to ever have success Sano needs to understand the importance of work, and defense.
  8. Whether Berrios should have stayed up is a different discussion than whether he should be called up now. 7/26/16. I think he should have stayed up when he got here, but that is history. But there is no sense in not playing out the whole Nolasco/Milone/you name it scenario for another week. If by Aug 2 they haven't made any headway into this situation and just sit in their normal muddled static status, trying to hedge every decision, then it's time to get the pitchforks out. The frustration here, IMHO, is not just Berrios, it's the seeming impossibility to get off the dime. I know there have been some changes made, but it's still shuffling the chairs, no firm direction has ever been taken.
  9. How do some of these teams get all these great SS? You would think dumb ass luck would allow us one on occasion?
  10. The Cubs moved players that were blocked for quite awhile. There is no reason the Twins can't do the same. Berrios and Chargois are quality prospects with no apparent route to MLB due to solid highly regarded veterans blocking them!
  11. I agree, with this caveat, Polanco's clock is ticking. Sooner or later a determination of what to do with him needs to happen. Of course we always tend to the later, after all other options have passed. Note I said, passed, , not explored!
  12. Unfortunately this is a team that has less time to evaluate Park than many think. But the injury thing muddles the whole evaluation of the first 65% of the season. How badly was he injured? If he went to Rochester and not the DL, and is now hitting why didn't he stay here and heal? Is he hitting in Rochester for the same reason he hit in KBL? Quality of pitching. What is he hitting in Rochester? Hangers or 95 mph FB's? The problem with Park and Vargas is you can't keep them both. And that's without Sano being factored in. Sano will not continue to averag 2/3 of an error a game, but where will he settle in. This roster is like a Rubics Cube. Everytime you want to move a piece, it scares up 3 other pieces. Frankly by next spring the main decisions have to be made, or 2016 will be repeated.
  13. If on 8/1 Berrios is not at least on a plane headed to Mpls, then only one of two assumptions can be made. The Twins are convinced he is a AAAA pitcher, or they are incompetent. BF nothing's gonna happen until a move in the SP rotation is made. If they don't do that, then I have no idea what they are going to do.
  14. How long before he is eligible for the rule 5? My understanding is he is a below average OF? We have a crowded OF already. But looking at things as a whole, it's still kind of a shame he didn't get a chance at the DH slot. I have no idea if he would have succeeded, but he was yet another victim of the Park decision.
  15. .............and now you know the REAL reason TR got sacked! Apathy! Or is it apauthy!
  16. This might not be a popular answer, but I think that a guy who thought, rightfully or wrongly, that he was going to be a middle of the rotation starter, ends up in a non defined role in the BP. That's what happened. And I imagine this happening while the SP was basically the worst in baseball made it worse. May isn't blameless by any extent, but he had plenty help.
  17. The first thing you learned on a farm was always unload the manure spreader into the wind. It only took one time going in the wrong direction for that to sink in! The second thing we learned is that it doesn't take a strong man to break a wooden fork handle, it only takes a stupid one! When my wife called me today, and told me she broke the handle on the potato fork I reminded her of what my dad told us. The third thing I should have learned from pa was don't tell your wife everything your dad said!
  18. The losing was here for years! First in the form of mediocre teams in weak divisions getting their ass handed to them in the playoffs, to the point of embarrassment. And then just plain old full time losing, 4 years of over 90 losses. A faux run for the roses, er 2nd WC in '15, and now this year. And not one thing moved the Pohlads until now. It could be a coincidence, if one believes in coincidences!
  19. Years ago I heard Reusse explain the interest in soccer for young families. He said it was because when every kid came off the field there parents could commend them on what a good job they did chasing after the ball. There was no pop up to drop, football to fumble, or basket to miss! I have a hard time disputing that theory.
  20. I just wrote a pro Mauer post myself in a different thread. I wrote mine because I thought it was reality. Mauer is the least of the teams problems, SP with bad arms are far more of an issue. This isn't the NFL, players don't take cuts and there is no salary cap. It's a free for all. If a billionaire who got his money from dad, asked me to take a pay cut I would imagine I would find that hard to takes seriously. As for talking in the clubhouse, he doesn't have too. We do it for him! (I now return you to the original poster, lol)
  21. I am amazed by the Mauer angst. Is he the classic power laden 1B, no? But he has saved quite a few IF from throwing errors, his fielding on GB is solid, and the Twins have far more problems at the plate than Mauer. He lost both his natural position, and at least a couple years to concussions. As for his salary, that was based on the new stadium, promises made to keep players, and a fortitious last year in the dome. It's a sunk cost. He's a local boy, with a good gig, who likely is not going anywhere. I know I wouldn't. And yes, he would have rocked in Boston. One one other topic. I hate soccer, but if I was the Twins I wouldn't overlook its impact. There are zillions of people playing it, and it is a world wide sport. Whether one likes it or not, it ain't going away! Ten years ago, who amongst us would have contemplated 7,000 plus for women's professional basketball in summer?
  22. I think your assumption is correct. One could argue the chicken and egg theory, does the money shortfall cause JP to fire Ryan? Or did he fire Ryan because he didn't believe Ryan would get his business back in the black? Bottom line, it's about da money. IF the Twins record was not reflected in the P&L, Terry Ryan would still be the teams GM. I don't doubt that JP would like to be in a WS parade, but that might be the extent of his baseball dream. Having competitive teams, playing solid fundamental ball is likely not part of his business model for this team. I fully realize that wins and losses and revenue go hand in hand. But the losses have been there for most of the last 6 years, the playoff losses have been there for the last 20. It wasn't until the revenue stream got whacked that there was any urgency displayed. Pa and Reusse were right. It's all about da money!
  23. You would have to squeeze in your comments between our comments about the women players! .
  24. My dad had an answer to many issues involving anything from politics to education to religion. When questioned on why something had happened he often said: "It's all about da money". Reusse seems to have the same opinion on the change at One Twins Way. That it was all about da money! If nothing else it would follow one long time belief about the Pohlad family. They're all about da money! I for one, have often accused them of being only interested in the P&L, not in the products success. And while I have recently thought it could have been a conflict between Pohlad and Ryan over actual team construction, that always begged this question. When exactly did JP develop an interest in evaluating baseball players. I forward this column for our enjoyment, not for another endless series of posts on Reusses ability to have an opinion. http://www.startribune.com/firing-gm-terry-ryan-was-purely-a-business-decision-for-twins/387547431/
