    I'll post a retraction if proven wrong, but the problem with this waiver claim, as I see it, is it tells me Falvine aren't going to do anything real to improve the 2019 Twins. Cron is your 2019 first baseman. They'll dumpster dive, look late in the offseasn for cheap FAs that don't get offers, make a waiver claim here and there for ill-fitting pieces that don't move the needle much if at all (as so accurately stated by Carole), and perhaps complete an ultimately meaningless trade or two. They won't spend, they won't add any difference makers, and next by July they'll be looking to auction off parts for lotto tickets again in another wasted season. If Cron is the 5th or 6th best piece acquired, fine. If not, they're not doing anything worthwhile with this move.

    So...they're going to add a LH hitting first baseman to platoon with Cron? Otherwise, this is pointless.

    What are we trying to win? Baseball games, or wins per dollar? There's a reason Cruz will cost more.

    I'd wager a lot of money on Cruz out hitting Cron in 2019.

    We dont have TSA security at a crosswalk, but we have lines, stop lights, pedestrian right of way laws, and we teach our children to look for traffic before crossing. Is that also "Security theater"? People still get hit by cars, right? I guess I dont understand your position...you want MORE security? You dont believe in ANY security? Surely you cant be arguing that checking for weapons at the door has ZERO effect, can you?

    So they’ve gone from the previous stinkers to giving Evers his chance?

    Of course it will. Any security is better than none. How much better is debatable, but whether there is SOME level of increase is not. And for the record, checking customers for weapons at the door is not “simplistic,” nor ineffective. It’s not perfect, but it provides a much safer environment at any venue than not checking. Including Target Field.

    We need to get better at all methods of player acquisition. Trades, draft, develop, international talent, and yes, the entire range of free agents, from bargain basement finds to top of the line proven talent.

    None of those rely solely on the farm system. All of them take what they can get from the farm, gladly, and then find whatever else they need. They don’t wait until they’re “one player away,” they don’t make excuses about how hard it is, how expensive it is, how inefficient it is. The idea the Twins can rely on the farm system is wishful thinking. Nobody does.

    To sort of repeat myself from the Johnson thread, Falvine certainly have the courage of their convictions, at the least. They still need players, of course. Go get some.

    Donaldson, please. Been beating that horse since mid summer. I don't care if he's a risk. The team is in a position where they need to take risks if they want to be relevant. And the risk/reward on Donaldson is the best of the bunch, by far. Add Cruz, or Santana, plus a healthy Sano, and the middle of the order suddenly looks a lot different.

    Wow. I have no idea if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but it's pretty clear they're not taking the easy way out, I'll give them that.

    I assumed they meant exactly what they said. They'll be in year three in 2019. "Competitive every year" means every year, including 2019. They've had ample time to do all that other stuff. Go get the actual players that will result in a competitive team, one that can challenge for a division title and get to the postseason. They have money, trade assets, their own managerial staff, and have had time. "Waiting" is just another word for failure. BTW, I did not assume "competitive" means they have to be built like Houston, you're the one doing that.

    Falvey has already stated the goal is to be competitive every year. Presumably 2019 falls under "every year."

    Well, he would if he was signed to an extension. Have to stay.

    Florimon is 31 and has a career .588 OPS. Buxton career .672. To say nothing of their minor league history or pedigree. They are not remotely similar. Nobody would have considered a long term deal for Florimon, ever. Certainly Buxton has been massively disappointing, but there is undeniable talent, potential, and pedigree there.

    The Twins don’t have to choose between signing Machado, or Marwin, Murphy and Miller. They can do all four.

    How does spending $10 now and $70 next year, or $60 now and $20 next year, change P&L? Are you one of those failed businessmen who focused solely on the quarterly report, and ignored the yearly and long term reports? If anything, In terms of a baseball team's business side--one in desperate need of some buzz to generate interest--you might be better off spending now. At the least, no worse. And in baseball terms, the guys you need might not be available if you wait to sign them until you don't really need them, in addition to which by then your prospects are getting more expensive. And if your prospects don't pan out, at least you'll have the players you signed to trade for more prospects to sell to your fanbase. A baseball team isn't measured by normal methods anyway. No owner gets into baseball expecting to expand his riches. He eventually makes his money by franchise value increase, but his goal is (or should be) to watch his toy win a world championship. It's not a P&L business. It's a Ws&Ls business. That's how his ownership will be viewed by his customers.

    Unless there's additional, major injury...or Buxton quits...there is zero chance he's out of baseball in 2 or 3 years. He'll have a job in AAA, at a minimum, for at least another half decade.
