    In addition to adding needed talent, set about assembling a staff that, in a relatively short time, will be getting interviews from other teams for bigger and better jobs.

    I think this is the exact wrong way to look at it. Having poorer options is the reason it's so important a manager make good decisions. When you have multiple good options to choose from, the decisions aren't all that critical. Leaving Verlander in or pulling him for one of several shut down relievers probably doesn't matter all that much. But when you don't have Verlander, or many shut down relief options, it's incredibly important a manager has the best available option on the mound at all times, to reduce the disadvantage he's at. You can't keep Odorizzi on the mound past the point where he's maximally effective, because he starts at a much lower point of effectiveness than a guy like Verlander. When Verlander loses 10 percent, he's stlil pretty good. When Odorizzi loses 10 percent, well, he's not. Likewise, You can't overuse your best relievers simply because you don't have many good ones, so you save them for important outs whenever possible. Making smart, short- and long-term pitching moves is one of the primary reasons managers matter. They will sometimes backfire of course, because every pitcher sometimes give up runs. But putting your pitchers, and your team, in the best possible position, way more often than not, will pay off. And putting your pitchers (and team) in bad positions too often will hurt you just the same.

    With little to base it on, I like the hire. Young, seems forward thinking and smart, and not just another formula-following internal hire. Now get to the business of giving the man a roster that gives him a fighting chance to do his job.

    I'm pretty sure age was part of the equation as well. It's not hard to imagine they thought, coming into his age 26 season, he had room to improve.

At this point in the game, you need to come to the table with something better than empty claims about minor league "talent" in defense of the front office. None of that "talent" has delivered a single solitary major league victory.

    Non concur. Relievers with great stuff aren't a crap shoot. Quite the contrary. The crap shoot comes in when you think relievers are a crap shoot, so you spend no resources or make no effort to get good ones.

    I agree Twins ownership has been cheap in recent decades. But that has zero to do with my point.

    There is zero benefit to bringing up players before they are ready. In addition to the obvious possible stunting of development and losing baseball, you dont even save money. Player X’s salary structure is pretty much the same whether their rookie season is at 19 or 24. There are three years of serfdom, followed by three years of arbitration. The only question is, when do you start the clock? And by pushing off their rookie season, you actually stand a chance of getting them cheaply through their prime, rather than paying them to learn, and then watching them hit free agency at 27 or 28. Minor leaguers should always have to force their way into a big league lineup. Always.

    I know I don't want a .750 corner outfielder as the primary option. That's how you end up watching the playoffs. In any case, if we're giving up on Kepler, moving Polanco isn't the answer. Go find a bat. BTW, there were 23 such players in 2017, including 8 OFers. Two more OFers if we take it down to .885. It's not like .900 OPS players are unicorns. Those are the guys we should be looking to find a position for.

    Polanco's bat plays in the middle infield. I have zero interest in moving it to a corner OF slot. If they're going to replace Kepler, find the .900+ OPS bat they need, not a .750 guy learning the position.

    Goldschmidt is likely available too. Package deal? Take on the entire Greinke salary, in return for a lesser price on Goldschmidt. I think AZ is going to have trouble finding a taker for Greinke unless they eat some salary.
