    We’re off topic here, I guess, and that’s my fault. But it’s not a cheap shot. It’s a legitimate question. Remove the sentimentality. There’s only one expiring contract left, no?

    So your theory is, Mauer said “no” to a trade? As I said, that’d be well within his rights. Just don’t turn around and tell me he cares about the Twins. I’ve been told repeatedly that the Twins were smart to trade expiring contracts. Well, there’s one that didn’t leave.

    As for Mauer...why was he the only expiring contract not traded this year? Did he exercise his no trade clause? Entirely within his rights, of course, but what does that say about him?

    I often read this. Mauer is a career .255/.347/.397 hitter at Fenway. It’s only 157 PAs, but I still don’t think he’s any different than he was if he had played in Fenway. He might even be worse...he rarely hits the ball over the LFer, and with the LFer playing shallower, more of those soft liners to left might get caught instead of falling for singles.

    He’s going to...what? Come to spring tng on a minor league deal? No guaranteed money? It doesn’t work that way.

    I’m doubtful every team would treat this situation the same. Likewise, I’m willing to bet some organizations have better reputations than others.

    Maybe not zero impact. Some, maybe. When you have options, wouldn’t you give some weight to picking an employer with a good reputation for employee relations? And make no mistake, MLBPA members are aware of this.

    Possibly, although that’s an odd way to make that point. In any case, This way there is no need to buy it...and hasn’t it been reported Buxton turned down an extension anyway?

    The extra year isn’t about money. It’s about how long they own his rights. Once again...if they had brought him up Sep 1st, and he never returned to the minors, he could have been a free agent following the 2021 season. Now, he cant be until after the 2022 season.

    In addition to the excellent replies above by Fargoguy, Mike, and Carole above, don’t forget Mauer doesn’t play first base once per series. Which is bad enough in itself, but becomes really limiting when someone else isn’t in the lineup. Give Sano a sore hammy, and now what’s the lineup look like, with Mauer not at first? A part time first baseman who only plays first base WILL have a negative impact on the lineup. And the reward is a .750 OPS if you’re reasonably lucky. Move on. Let’s hope they aim higher.

    The post I responded to stated, “If he has an MVP year, he walks.” Which isn’t true. He’s under team control through 2022, no matter how well he does. He could be under team control even longer, where he to spend 2019 in the minors, for example. He has an option left. But in no case can he “walk” begore the 2023 season. That’s the entire reason they didn’t recall him.

    I think all of the guest analysts are fine in small doses. I think all of them would quickly get old. I guess Morneau has been the best, but he’s so soft spoken and monotone.

    Well, no. The extra year of team control means he CANT leave as a free agent until after the 2022 season. Without it, he could have left after the 2021 season. It has nothing to do with predicting costs.

    Be the next Aaron Hicks? We should be so lucky. Hicks would be the Twins best player today.

    It’s not really a monetary issue. It’s a one more year of team control issue. I also believe I read the Twins tried to sign him to a deal this past winter, and for whatever reason he wasn’t agreeable. I could be wrong on this. I do agree the chances of a long term contract are now probably gone.

    Worth less than 1/162, actually. The front office told us the season was over back in July.

    Wow. I was pretty happy with game one. Fleck will end up being a success. They won’t be great this year, but better. And you can see he’s already improving the talent and depth. There are NFL players to be on that team. They threw the ball downfield, and looked competent at times, as well as unafraid of the very act. That’s already a leap forward.

    It becomes harder and harder to see any progress from this front office. They’ve had two years to rework this 40 man and we get Gimenez, Belisle and Field on Sep 1st. And there’s basically nothing else intriguing enough on the 40 man to call up. Including, somehow, Buxton. They’ve dismantled the team, we know they can do that. What else have they done?

    Unless there was something physically wrong with Austin, that’s no reason he should have been on the bench today, in favor of Gimenez.
