    I went to the kitchen to plate (actually, bowl) some salsas for a neighbor coming over. Ten minutes later I come back and you guys have already lost the game! I just can't trust you!

    Dick just mentioned the artificial "turf" in Tampa. That may explain it.

    One other possibility: The electronic pitch-calling system. I can't believe that only the Astros had a system for observing the catcher's fingers and somehow communicating this to the batter. They were just the ones who got caught (and maybe used it more effectively). Maybe they haven't hacked the electronic system yet and the batters are truly guessing on pitches that they would have known before.

    Interesting question: Trying to explain the low rate of offensive production this year. Could it have something to do with the electronic signaling of pitches? Who knows how many teams had secret ways of observing the catchers' fingers and signaling to the batter? Now the batter is back to guessing (until they figure out how to hack the electronic signal).

    I'm sorry, but an .096 batting average is not modest. A .236 batting average is modest. A .196 batting average is simply poor. An .096 batting average is lower than many (most?) pitchers back in the days when we expected pitchers to bat. I'm ready to not have his automatic out in the lineup every time through.

    So, the logical extension is to have Sano attempt to steal second with the bases loaded and wait for the opponents to mess up? (It might work against Detroit and Chicago.)
