    We made him throw 6 pitches in the first. At that right, he probably can't go more than 16 innings or so tonight.

    Did anyone say that he or she wanted Celestino playing all season? Did anyone say that he or she hated Buxton? That's just silly and none of us say it or believe it. That said, it would really be nice if he got more games that a well-used relief pitcher.

    Sadly, I have to say you're probably right. It's hollow consolation to know that it's likely costing him salary with all the performance clauses.

    Thinking about it, this is the piece that underlies my negative opinion of Sano. The good times are great, if infrequent. But the bad times are abysmal. Kind of a black hole in the middle of the lineup, sucking up outs for a week at a time.

    This A's team reminds me of Charlie Finley's A's teams from 1977 and 1978, after Jackson, Bando, Campaneris, Hunter, etc. had all left with the dawn of free agency. We used to go and watch the Twins play them in Oakland from time to time. They were brutal (but still managed to beat the Twins a few times when we went). Think about what would happen if the entire Twins team left all at once and the whole team was promoted from the minor leagues. That's what those teams were like.

    Interesting story (?): My wife and I were taking a Slovak language class in Bratislava. The teacher was teaching us about gendered adjectives and used the example (in Slovak) of "fat man." My wife responded with the corresponding words for "fat lady." The instructor turned beet red and said "Nooooooo! No fat lady. Half-slim lady." We still use the term (and chuckle) when we see a particularly corpulent woman.

    I don't think I've ever seen a plate umpire miss so many calls on pitches 3-4 inches out of the strike zone. Robo-ump, please!

    Across the river, the Slingin' Slav struggled through 3 2/3 shutout innings, somehow working around 5 hits and 2 walks without conceding a run. Saints lead 1-0 after 4.
