    The game was lost tonite in the first inning. One run in, second and third, no out, and 4-5-6 hitters up. Did not score. Could have put some serious hurt on Detroit and it’s pitching staff. Could understand that happening with Sandy Koufax pitching, but not Carpenter. VERY DISAPPOINTING!

    Forgot to include-great analysis by Brian! One question, if Forsythe (or anyone) is going to play 3rd, who is going to play 2nd? Aren’t you defeating the purpose of flexibility in this case?

    The Twins are not going to spend the money for a top 2nd baseman next year, and a top 2nd baseman will never pick Minnesota if he has other suitors. It cracks me up when I see guys saying “just get Machado,” like that’s a possibility! My educated guess is that even Escobar will land a contract that is too rich for the Twins. Dozier, too, and I’m not even sure the Twins would want him back. So, with my limited knowledge of his SSS, I wouldn’t be opposed to have Forsythe at 2nd next year. He has skills like the 2nd basemen of 20-30 years ago-little power, decent defensively, and a contact hitter who doesn’t strike out much. Maybe someone like him has little value in the modern game. But it is fun watching him come to bat in scoring opportunities, and not have to pray that he doesn’t strike out. I was really never a Dozier fan until I looked at ALL of his statistics. Like most good things, I never appreciated him, but I think his skills have significantly eroded. Time for a new era to begin. Forsythe might be a good stop-gap.

    Trevor May checks all of my boxes to be the closer, except, I doubt he currently is in a position to pitch two, or sometimes 3, days in a row. Busenitz is my second option.

    I’ve been on the Gonsalves bandwagon for years, but at this point all that it’s got me is .................admiration for his persistence!

    Maybe there is a reason May hasn’t pitched. Arm troubles, or maybe having some discomfort. Think most of us want to see him pitching more. And so does Molitor.

    Terrific article!! Amazing breakdown and analysis! I would agree that something like tipping could be the reason for the drastic decline. That and maybe overuse.........

    The memory I have is not finding a Stan Musial card one summer. Every nickel I had went into baseball cards, but I never could find a Musial. Only 1 kid in the entire town had one! I remember I was so jealous!

    I get the feeling that most posters think Stewart is going to fail. The same attitude seems to be present in the “hidden” evaluations of Gonsalves’ ability. AAAA pitcher, poor secondary pitches, only throws 90, bad control guy. Personally, I’d like to see both Stewart and Gonsalves get more than just one start, or some token late September appearances. The organization should want to know how these pitchers handle adversity. Very seldom does a rookie come up and blow everybody away. Some of our best pitchers over the years have had very poor beginnings. (See Johan Santana). We have more than a few pitchers on the staff currently who do not belong on a major league roster. One or two more wins or losses right now mean nothing in the overall picture. But we have been talking about Stewart and Gonsalves for years. They deserve a chance to show whether they can or cannot handle pitching in the big leagues.

    Absolutely great move! This move gives me encouragement that the Twins are willing to see what they have in players like Stewart. Really think this should have been Gonsalves, but it’s a start.

    Looks like I’m in the minority, but I’m not unhappy to see Duffy back up. Maybe he isn’t any good, but in his rookie season he was the Twins best pitcher down the stretch. He has struggled since, but I love his bulldog attitude. He tends to be his worst enemy at times, but this is the perfect occasion to see if he’s improved. There is absolutely nothing to lose. If he sucks, start the revolving door with the Rochester relievers. I hope Austin plays tonite and all 3 games against Detroit. There is no way he can be worse than Morrison!

    Now the question is who is going to get called up to take Rodney’s roster spot. Personally, I hope it’s Busenitz.

    I say why not try Austin at 1B? Has any team in baseball had worse production from their first baseman? Between Mauer and Morrison (AB’s at DH included) their stats (through 8-8) AB- 622 R- 78 H- 144 RBI- 73 HR- 18 AVE- .232 For 2 starters- these number are pretty pathetic for positions that are considered power sources!

    I’ll be extremely disappointed if it’s not Gonsalves. He has watched everyone else get a chance this year because of his inability to avoid walks. And I also think he needs more than a couple starts in September. I’d be really happy to see him take Odarizzi’s spot in the rotation. And please, no more Grossman next year. We can do better!

    Knowing how the Twins roll, I wouldn’t be surprised when Magill comes off his maternity leave, he’s sent back to Rochester! After all, that should be his reward for his strong pitching lately, right? Tough to beat out Belisle and Drake, I guess!

    Why all the hate for Dozier? He has had some amazing seasons for the Twins! He clearly has been pressing in his walk year. Is there anything to the rumors that he has been a problem in the clubhouse? We forget that these players are 20-30 year old kids!
