  1. The first thing I noiced when I saw the picture leading off the article is how unprotected his right shoulder is. As someone who had a total replacement of his left shoulder in 2012 and is getting the right shoulder replaced in two weeks, I might be a little sensitive to seeing a bare shoulder. I know that a catcher needs mobility in his throwing arm but that looks far too exposed to me. I felt sympathy pains and a little shudder when I saw the picture.
  2. I have a curiousity question. I heard Stephan Gonsalves mentioned on MLB radio but the "expert" pronounced his last name as Gonzales. Is that correct? I have not heard anyone in the Twins organization verbally say his name so I don't know. And I now live in Maine where nothing is pronounced correctly so that doesn't help matters. Aye-yah?
  3. Twinstalker - Pearson is just out of high school, trying to adjust to the rigors of professional baseball, and you've already decided he will never get anything beyond a "cup of coffee?" That's harsh. Give him time to figure out how to be an adult before you throw him out with the bath water.
  4. I would venture to say that your chess/checkers opinion would be very different if the prospects were ranked a lot higher. However, I'm also pretty confident in guessing that the Twins asked for more and were turned down. To me, good move and I hope in three years it looks like it looks like great moves.
  5. There was a lot of talk that his back problems were related to pitching in relief. If that is true, he should be brought back as a starter. If they are unrelated, he would be a great reliever. What will the Twins do? Probably release him and he goes on to be an All-Star with another team.
  6. Following along the same lines as Mikelink45, the effect of stringing together several hits on the pitcher is more noticeable than a single swing. Both situations may only result in a single run scoring. But with a home run, the pitcher can easily say "just one pitch that got away from me" and recover quickly while a string of base hits will likely cause some serious doubts to entire the fragile mind of a pitcher. Add to that, the threat of a stolen base, a change to the pitcher's preferred use of a full wind up, and pressure on the pitcher to stop the bleeding, and the impact is even greater. And, to me, it's more fun to watch all the thinking going on by both teams when there are players on base.
  7. Take that money and extend the contracts of the young stars already on the team and not spend it all on one player.
  8. Which one would you like? Kevin Correia, Vance Worley, Phil Hughes, Ricky Nolasco, Mike Pelfrey???? It's not that the Twins haven't tried, but it's a big crap shoot. And you don't just sign somebody. There has to be a mutual agreement between a player and a team. I'm not convinced Yu Darvish would come to Minnesota regardless of the money offered. I think he would accept less money to be in a community with a significant Japanese influence. or return to the Rangers where he felt very comfortable. At the ridiculous salaries offered to free agents, what's a few million?
  9. After all, this is Minnesota. Everything in moderation.
  10. Missing on Jay? I think that is a little premature. He may be our closer by the enkd of next season. Or they may try him as a starter again next year. Way to early to call that draft pick a failure.
  11. You are absolutely correct but you still don't like taking a $20M or $30M loss on a hobby.
  12. Your "exact" words were "beyond irritating" which I think to me is the equivalent of upset. Regardless, I am not a fan of the "let's throw money at the problem and see if that works" business model that many fans (and some owners) seem to like. For example, the Red Sox. They have a pretty good everyday lineup and over the last two years have opted to allocated $50M per year to two pitchers (Sale and Price). That get them to a playoff round. Whoppee. They probably would have gotten there without Sale and Price. I'm just going to sit back, watch what the new front office does over the next couple of years, and then offer them my unsolicitated advice.
  13. You're upset because a business owner chooses to run his business at a profit? I sure hope you don't run your own business.
  14. According to what I've been reading about the new CBA, Otani now falls into a new category which leaves no team with a financial restriction on signing him. So it sounds like where ever he feels he fits in best is where he'll end up. And I doubt the Japanese culture of Minnesota is going to entice him. (Yes, that was sarcasm.)
  15. I live in Maine and all I get in the news is Red Sox so I know all about spending money on pitching. The Sox pay Sale $13M a year and Price $30M a year. That's $43M a year for two players. How much further in the playoffs did that get them? Not much further than the Twins. I would rather see money invested in extensions for the Twins young stars to keep this offense together for five to eght years. I think the minors have enough good starters and relievers to avoid going nuts on an "Ace" (whatever that is?). And if, after extensions are complete, there is money available for free agents, see what can be signed at a reasonable price. Or save the money until next year when you can pool it with the savings from Maurer's contract expiring. The free agent class is supposed to be much better next year.
  16. It's a lot easier to make quick moves when you have a couple dozen pitchers in the bullpen who are all better than any one pitcher in the Twins bullpen. Give Molitor some MLB-quality arms and he might manage a whole lot differently.
  17. To me, the ideal scenario is Dozier leads off with a homerun and then the Twins proceed to bat around twice, getting off to a 15-0 lead. Santana and the bullpen hold the Yanks to six runs and the Twins advance. Bring on Cleveland. I think the same strategy would work against the Indians also.
  18. I appreciate the job that the BeeGees did this year. No panic, no knee jerk reactions. Took what they were dealt and made the most of it. Yes, there were no big name free agent signings last winter. But does anyone really think that the big names were lining up to join a 100-loss, small market team? I think this off season, if there are are any good free agents available, our young offense might convince a pitcher or two to sign up for the ride. Regardless, congratulations to the Twins for an incredible year. And it isn't over yet.
  19. Check out a blog I posted a couple weeks back called "A Look Back". I found an article posted at the beginning of the season in which many people posted their quesses at the Twins total wins for the year. Only one predicted that total to exceed 80.
  20. Rooker has an ETA of July 2017 and Gonsalvez June 2016? I think I missed those debuts.
  21. How often does a team have a minor league pitcher with an overall record of 20-1 that doesn't even get honorable mention?

    Review

I looked through the article and found that I didn't make a prediction. And it's a little late now. I think I was optomistically thinking upper 70s but I'm old and can't remember that far back.

    Review

I went back to a January 18, 2017 blog by Brandon Warne in which he predicted the Twins would win 80 games and asked readers to comment and make their own predictions. The blog was eight pages long but by page five, the predictions stopped and the criticisms of the team began. Most of the negative comments were about how horrible the Twins defense would by in 2017, especially at third base with Miguel Sano~. Here is a summary of the predictions that I found: Brandon Warne: 80 Wsnydes: 70-75 PseudoSABR: 70s Tom Froemming: high 60s Mazeville: 80+ Jimmer: low 70s Diehardtwinsfan: 80 at best Halsey Hall: 75-80 Jandersh: 70 Einstein1: less than 70 Han Joelo: 75 Platoon: 73-75 wiesbadenDAN: 75 beckmt: 75-80 nytwinsfan: 75 Doomtints: 70 DocBauer: 70-75 Brock Beauchamp: they will spend the entire year under .500 Bk432: 75 Oldgoat_MN: 70-75 Only two people (10%) predicted at least 80 wins and only three others (15%) said 80 was an outside possibility if all the stars aligned. Simple math tells us that 75% of Twins Daily posters on this blog blew it.
  24. I was amazed to read that Niko Goodrum had 11 steals in today's game. Must be some sort f record, right?
