That depends on what the Twins get back when they trade him in the next couple of days. If, instead, they extend him, no harm no foul. The only way they are truly worse off is if they allow him to walk after 2022.

We would be better off today? I think the Twins would have the exact same team except possibly without Donaldson if they had met whatever demands Berrios might have had. Berrios would still be Berrios. And what if his demands were for 10 years and $250M? Is that a worthwhile "investment?"

You now think it is time to be sellers?? Where have you been for the last few months? I've been advocating giving Berrios a deadline of late July to either agree to an extension or trade him while his value is the highest. Kirilloff's injury has nothing to do with the decision.

In my rapidly failing system of brain cells, signing a contract with a lot of incentives is the definition of "betting on yourself." Signing a guaranteed money contract is not betting on yourself but rather letting someone else bet on you. It's not a bet if there isn't a risk.

My comment was more about the Twins than the young man. He appears to be a perfect Twins' pick based on past drafts. And if the Twins do draft him, I predict a bust. Once again the often repeated mantra of use the money to extend (or resign) Berrios. He's going to test the free agency market. No doubt about it. Signing anyone takes two sides to agree and with Berrios (and probably Buxton also) there is only one side that wants to sign before free agency - the front office. Ain't going to happen kiddies! Normally, people complain the Rocco pulls starters far too soon. Now it's because he leaves them in too long. I'm beginning to think that a lot of people just don't like anything Rocco does.

According to Bleacher Report, the Mets are already asking about Donaldson. If that is accurate, then the offer from the Mets might be significantly higher than what the posters in this thread are suggesting. The new Mets' owner has money and a complete disregard for the luxury tax. In my humble opinion, if he wants Donaldson, he will make a good offer.

Why not? According to most of the "experts" on MLB radio, Berrios wants to test free agency. If that happens, the Twins have nothing to show for keeping him. If they trade him now when he will be the #1 pitcher in demand at the trade deadline (again according to MLB radio), they get something back. And they can still try to sign him when he does go to free agency. Win-Win. People seem to forget that a contract involves two sides. If one side doesn't want to sign (Berrios and probably Buxton), then there will be no contract no matter what the offer is. This isn't baseball that existed before Lou Brock.

Two former GMs were on MLB radio this morning discussing the trade deadline. Both agreed that, because the Nationals are now in the pennant race and Max Scherzer was not longer going to be traded, that Jose Berrios was now the number one target for any team needing starting pitching. They both agreed that the price for Berrios would be very high but that several teams in need (and maybe more if Trevor Bauer gets into legal problems) would be in the running for him. That is very promising for the Twins front office. If a couple others can be moved for decent returns, 2022 looks interesting and 2023 looks exciting.

"If the Twins don't think they can sign him" makes the deal far better than decent to good because the alternative is getting nothing, zero, bumpkis.

The only MLB games that I watch are Twins' games. And because I live in Maine, those are few and far between. And yet, I still record them so I can watch in fast forward mode watching to see if the score changes. Then I go back and see what happened. That way I miss the strikeouts, the adjusting of batting gloves, the changing of the baseballs any time a pitch gets near the dirt, etc. I usually can watch a nine inning game in well under an hour. I have an idea for a novel trade deadline thread with a few simple ground rules that will make it different from all other trade deadline threads. The ground rules are: No bashing the front office. No bashing the manager. No belittling of other opinions. The purpose of this thread is for presenting your ideas about what should be done between now and the trade deadline. And to keep this from becoming another long debate about whether or not to extend Berrios and Buxton, the only assumption to follow is that both will refuse an extension and go to free agency in 2022. So I’ll begin. I am going to approach this on a position by position basis. No reason for this but it helps me think. Catcher Leave this position alone – except if someone approaches me with an overwhelming offer for Garver. Then trade him. First Base This is Kirilloff’s home. Trade Sano for whatever you can get. Package him with Berrios or Buxton and Kepler for the best package. Second Base Arraez, Polanco, Gordon??? I would keep Arraez and Gordon, and see if anyone offers anything of value for Polanco. He could also be part of a Buxton or Berrios package to increase the return. Shortstop I’m wavering on this. If someone wants Simmons, then trade him. Gordon or Polanco (if not traded) can fill in for the rest of 2021 and Lewis or Palacios could be the shortstop in 2022. Third Base Trade Donaldson for the best offer. Arraez or (Miranda as a tryout for 2022) takes over. Left Field This is now Larnach’s to have and to hold from this day forward. Center Field If no trade partner is found, Buxton remains as the center fielder. If he is moved, Celestino gets a four-month tryout. Right Field Offer Kepler as an additional piece in a major trade (see the First Base comment). If no one wants him, then he plays right field the rest of the year. If he is moved, Ernie de la Trinidad gets a tryout. Designated Hitter Say good bye to our best hitter for the last three years. Brent Rooker is now the DH. Starting Pitching Trade Pineda if an offer is made. Trade anyone for that matter. Relief Pitching Trade everyone that another team asks about. The only exceptions are Taylor Rogers and Tyler Duffy. Keep both players unless a great offer is made. Final Comment All of the trades above are designed to bring to the Twins pitching, pitching, pitching, one or two short stops, and a center fielder. And it frees up about $60M in salary that can be used for additional pitching, pitching, pitching and maybe a shortstop. One comment about Jax. He has pitched less than 300 innings since leaving college (fulfilling his military commitment and COVID). He is still learning. Don't give up on him yet.
