  1. I'll nudge this along by adding the forgettable Steve Shields and his 7.79 ERA for the Twins in 1989 to cover "S.S."
  2. I echo the "terrific analysis, Parker" from the above posts. I love what Sano is doing and hope he keeps it up. My question/concern is how soon before opposing teams REALLY start pitching around him? The best thing the Twins can do for Sano is get a solid hitting threat batting after Sano in the line-up.
  3. H20 - From what I recall, Santana, Nolasco for sure, and possibly Pelfrey were "top 10 starting pitching free-agents" when each of them hit the market. I'm not arguing the fact that these signings have not turned out as well as hoped, but the Twins needed starting pitching and these were some of the best available in free agency. Thus I don't blame the F.O. - at least they tried.
  4. I'm assuming no Twins have every had the initials "Q.Q.". Several options for "R", but I'll go with Rich Rollins.
  5. What makes the Kernels offensive explosion even more impressive is that they did it against a pitcher who was 8-1 with a 2.33 ERA coming into the game, and they blew him out in the first inning! Way to go CR!
  6. I don't believe there have been any Twins with "O.O." or, surprisingly "N.N." initials, so I'll add the underachieving Paul (I wish I was as good as Boog) Powell to cover the letter "P".
  7. "F" and "I" have been skipped because there are have been no Twins players with those initials. That brings us to "J" and I'll go with the immortal Jake Jacobs, the man of 10 career plate appearances (8 with the Twins). It looks like we'll need to skip "K" and "L" also. Who has an "M"?
  8. Wow - the positivity on this topic is refreshing! I'm hoping Eddie does continue to produce next year, but the regressions of Santana, Arcia and Vargas (I know, each player is different) should cause us all to temper our expectations for Eddie going forward.
  9. I agree Brock, but I put this a bit less on Molitor though. He was trying to piece together a line-up based on the players he was given. Arcia's season long struggles, and having Shaffer and Robinson as outfield "help" left the Twins way too thin in the outfield. Thus Molitor needed to keep juggling Santana, Escobar and Nunez around. Once Hicks and Rosario solidified things, Molitor gave Santana every chance to work thru his struggles. I don't have any issue with that. When Santana continued to struggle, he was sent down - yes probably weeks later than he should have been.
  10. I'll double up today by adding Eduardo Escobar...
  11. I'm hoping no one mentioned Dan Dobbek earlier in the string...
  12. Der Wunder Kid is potentially another who will be blocked by Mauer. All the talk above about DH at bats is moot UNLESS the Twins move Plouffe and let Sano take over at 3B.
  13. I hope it is injuries, but I suspect Arcia has regressed as a hitter AND opposing pitchers have discovered how to pitch to him. I'd love for the Twins to have too many players who deserve roster spots coming out of Spring Training next year. That is a GOOD problem to have.
  14. Sano is a charismatic individual that has the personality to be the face of a franchise. With Joe Mauer stepping aside to usher in the next wave of youth, the Twins young stars will become the emulated ballplayers of the future. Have to question the Mauer stepping aside statement. I'm not seeing Mauer stepping aside willingly for the next 3 seasons given he has $23M reasons not to. A lot can happen between now and then.
  15. Anyone know what Danny Santana's injury is, and how serious? If he is going to be out for a bit, why not shift Polanco to AAA and get Gordon a cup of coffee at AA?
  16. The box score shows that Buxton was 3-5 last night. Also the Red Wings rally that fell short was against Joba Chamberlain who now has a spiffy 14.4 ERA and 2.6 WHIP at AAA. I hope the Blue Jays aren't relying on him for anything the rest of the season.
  17. Yup - the Twins are going to resign Anthony Swarzak and give his a spot start since that worked out so well the past few seasons. :-)
  18. Prince Fielder earned the big bucks, but his daddy Cecil hit a few monster HRs in his day.
  19. Back to the relative theme... I believe Ozzie Canseco had a brother who was pretty good at one time.
  20. Agreed! Like the Twins trading Viola at the deadline. That worked out pretty well!
  21. Going back a bit, but the Viola trade happened at the trade deadline, and that one worked out pretty well.
  22. According to ESPN http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/13346369/detroit-tigers-trade-david-price-toronto-blue-jays For left-handers Daniel Norris, Matt Boyd and Jairo Labourt, Looks like Detroit is waiving the white flag this year, and Toronto is now "all in." And our Twins...?
  23. Another contributing factor could be that "pitch to contact" philosophy that the Twins held onto for so long. The system is still trying to "heal" from that. Although he was not successful as a starter, I do tip my cap to the Twins for their drafting of Glen Perkins...
  24. Trade deadline time can be one of the most interesting times of year for a baseball fan. Is my team going to do anything? Who can we get? What should we give up? Any opinions vary greatly. A trade can produce positive and negative reactions from those who follow their teams. Part of the reason is because, like the draft, it is a crap shoot. Who knew that the Atlanta Braves would get a future Hall of Fame pitcher by trading Doyle Alexander to the Tigers in 1987. After all, John Smoltz was 22nd round draft pick who was 4-10 with a 5.68 ERA in AA at the time of the trade. By the way, as a Twins fan, I'm REALLY glad that trade was made as we did not have to face Smoltz - except in the 1991 series - throughout his career. The Tigers did OK in that trade. Alexander went 9-0 down the stretch that year to help the Tigers win the East (although he got pummeled in the playoffs by that upstart team in Minnesota!) and was an All Star for them in 1988. So while it appears that Houston got a leg up on the A's with the Kazmir trade, no one knows for sure. Maybe in 3 years Jacob Nottingham will be the next Josh Willingham - hammering out 30+ homers a year. Then again, perhaps, Daniel Mengden will be the next Jason Adam, and that is what makes this time of year so interesting.
  25. Jo tossed 7 scoreless today, giving up on 4 hits to get his first career AAA victory (with the help of 4 relievers). Way to go, Jo!
