  1. Nice article, Andrew. I'm worried that the hitters are going to catch on / catch up to his splitter. If that happens, the pre 2019 Bailey will reappear. It hope that is not the case, but it it is, the Twins do have a few other options.
  2. Jiminy - in reality it is Maeda + Donaldson vs Ryu, Graterol and Raley. IMO that tips the balance towards what the Twins actually did.
  3. There was a post last week that showed Donaldson with several prospects around him and I commented that I hoped Lewis was one of them. Great to see he was/is. If I were Lewis I'd spend as much time as possible with/shadowing Donaldson. Also great to see Donaldson and Cruz willingness to do this.
  4. Was there not a time when the teams switched pitchers in this event (i.e. Twins pitchers throwing to Twins hitters)? Also - were the Gophers allowed to use their aluminium bats?
  5. My money is on Hardy. The Twins need another lefty on the staff.
  6. Is Royce Lewis in that shot with Donaldson? If I were Lewis, I'd be trying to shadow Donaldson as much as possible...
  7. I totally agree! I'm reading Sinek's Infinite Game book now and am looking forward to his talk in March. The Twins are trusting the process. Hopefully they will continue being successful enough doing this that they will be allowed to continue to do so.
  8. Seth - THANK YOU for the great work on these, as usual. BTW - you had Lewis as "2019 Ranking: NR" in the article. Probably should update that... :-)
  9. Cave has to make the 26 man roster first, IMO. Assuming the Twins keep 13 pitchers, and assuming everyone is healthy, then the final 3 roster spots likely come down to Gonzales, Cave, Adrianza and Astudillo. If the Twins decide to keep Astudillo because he can also catch, that reduces Cave's odds of making the team even more. I think Cave is a good ballplayer, but in all honesty I hope he does not get a ton of playing time this season as it means that Rosario, Buxton, Kepler (and to some extents Cruz) are all healthy and playing well. That would be the ideal situation for the Twins this season.
  10. Agreed. Certainly strikeout are great but there is nothing wrong with a 1-2-3 inning with no strikeouts. WHIP is a metric I like to look at. If your WHIP in in the low "1's" or lower, you are likely to be a very successful MLB pitcher.
  11. Matt: Thanks for the deep analysis. GOOD STUFF. I believe you have one typo in the article. You state "Pineda’s always been vulnerable to hard contact, and even during his strong finish to 2020, he gave up a fair amount of that, with opponents’ average exit velocity against him in the upper quartile of the league." I believe you meant 2019 instead of 2020. If not, I have to drop the Yoda line on you - "Seeing into the future, are we.... Very dangerous this can be. :-)
  12. I would LOVE IT if Romero pitched well enough in Spring Training to earn a spot on the 26 man roster - be it as a starter, opener or relief.
  13. Buxton's health and the ability of Sano to handle playing 1st every day are the two keys to better Twins defense this season IMO.
  14. Thanks for the thoughts, Ted! I believe you meant FIRST basemen in the line above. Very hopeful that Polanco and Arraez will work hard on improving their defense, but having Sano as the full-time first basemen is what makes me most nervous - especially his ability to pick throws in the dirt. It sounds like he is already working on - and looking forward to - the transition, which is great.
  15. Sorry, but I'm a realist when it comes to the Bombas. Losing Cron and Schoop (they hit 20+% of the dingers in 2019) AND the change to the ball will likely mean many less this season. I'm hoping the Twins can adjust and "manufacture" some runs. I totally agree with the statement that the Twins are a very good team, and should have a very good regular season. Now if we just do something about those pesky postseason issues...
  16. This is a TERRIFIC site and I appreciate all the time and effort that folks put into it. I don't like the advertising, but I'm more than happy to put up with it if the great writers on this site benefit from it.
  17. All the more reason to consider keeping him at 3B IMO. Remember what happened to him the last time the Twins changes his position. Then again, if he can make the transition like the other Miguel did...
  18. There are two probabilities of what Hill provides the Twins in 2020. 1) Little or 2) Nothing
  19. I like the thought that was put into this article. Yes - there are several examples / outliers that deter this, but there are many that reinforce the point, as well. One - for example - Greg Maddux won his first Cy Young when he was 26. BTW - is height *really* a huge factor? Johan Santana, Maddux and Lincecum were pretty good and they are not that tall. Not that I'm comparing Berrios to any of them, ability wise...
  20. Thanks for compiling this again Nick. I look forward to it! It is VERY interesting to see the turnover in the list from year to year. IMO that is not your "ineptitude in such endeavors" - it is the nature/volatility in the game - and one reason it is so interesting from season to season.
  21. The Twins have a dilemma IMO with respect to the DH for this season. They have one of the best in the business in Cruz, which is awesome. But they also have two others who should/could be getting at bats at DH - Sano and Garver. People say "play Garver or Sano at first", but that does not fly either as BOTH are even weaker defensively at first than their normal positions. I'm not sure how this will all play out, but it will be interesting to see!
  22. Bob: I agree with this. But the FO said they were going to add impact players in the off-season and they have not - yet. Hence the reason for the frustration. I'm still holding out (a minor sliver of) hope for a trade. I'd prefer to have that happen before the season so if the player(s) received are rental(s) the Twins can use them all season and also it gives the team more time to convince them to stay...
  23. Twins fans deserve to be disappointed thus far with the FOs off-season moves. They may not be done yet, but they promised "impact", and we have not seen that so far. Even if Bailey, Hill and the young arms make the starting staff "better" than last year, the team has done nothing to make the rotation "play-off" better. Until that happens all of these types of signings/moves will be looked upon with skepticism.
  24. Thanks for the memories Nick! I was at the game in 2011 when Revere made that catch - we could not believe he caught it. Was the only positive thing that happened that night, unfortunately...
