  1. I'm surprised there are not more infections announced. Just watch the top of the 9th inning of the White Sox/Indians game on Weds and the Sox players were all high-fiving, giving fist bumps, etc - without gloves on. If one of those players had COVID, many of them would now have it.
  2. I don't think baseball is going to have a season much longer. How many teams need to be "shut down" before they pull the plug on this thing...
  3. My takeaway from this game is "uh oh" because Cleveland has some REAL GOOD young starting pitching that the Twins will have to deal with for the next several years...
  4. In a shortened 60 games season, every game is worth 2.7 games compared to a regular 162 game schedule. Based on that, the Twins current 4-1 record in a 60 game schedule translates to an 11-3 record in a 162 game schedule. In other words, they are off to an excellent start! Bring on the Tribe!
  5. In those games they got no hits from not only Donaldson, but also none from Sano, Garver and Buxton! Great depth in this lineup. Buxton can stay on the bench as long as Cave continues to come up with clutch hits. FWIW - there were NO sweeps in the first weekend of baseball. Every team has at least one win and at least one loss. The longer this parity continues, the more interesting the season is going to be.
  6. The Twins lineup is ridiculously deep. Sano batting eight? That likely won't happen very often, but it worked out well for the team as Cave came thru with that clutch hit in the 1st. Well done, Rocco! What other team can score 10 runs when three of their most dangerous hitters (Sano, Donaldson and Garver) go 0 for 10 with 5 Ks?
  7. We already see possible evidence of this given Max Scherzer's 6.75 ERA after last nights game with the Yankees.
  8. This roster looks awesome in all areas. For a roster that doesn't look so good, look at Baltimore. Former Twin and offseason Orioles' minor league signing Tommy Milone will start the Orioles’ opener against Boston on Friday. Now that is BAD!
  9. I totally agree Dantes. And just looking at the movement on his pitches in the clips provided look really good - especially given he is just 17! What a wonderful H.S. graduation present the Twins just provided him...
  10. What about Sano and Garver? In 2-3 years it is likely Garver will need to see significant playing time at 1B or DH.
  11. I'm luke-warm on the pick, especially given the current glut of these types of players already in the system - as others have mentioned. Pitching and banging on trash cans wins Championships, and while Falvine did build a strong team in Cleveland, their approach of not drafting pitching with their high draft picks resulted in them never winning a World Series title.
  12. Agreed Trov. I'll really start paying attention when I start hearing from both sides that they are close to a deal AND all the logistics have been worked out. Until then it is all just speculation.
  13. I watched game 163 on YouTube a few weeks back. GREAT game and a wonderfully positive Twins memory. Also, Bill Smith had been a whipping boy on this site for many years - sometimes deservedly so. Thus thanks for pointing out his positive actions of landing three fantastic International players in 2009. Also, although he didn't (or couldn't) make significant upgrades to the team prior to the 2009 season, his in-season moves certainly contributed to the Twins winning the division as well.
  14. What - Ron Davis didn't make the list? Shocking! :-) I agree with the Top 5 but would also put Nathan first. Bill Campbell was pretty darn good. 17 wins in a season as a reliever may qualify him as an honorable mention candidate IMO. He left the Twins as a free agent when he signed a whopping 5-year, $1M contract with the Red Sox after earning $23K the prior two seasons with the Twins.
  15. Chin - I think you just did - Morneau from British Columbia along with Dave McKay Oh, right - There are others, but it is a short list. These players are from Canada also: Jesse Crain, Scott Diamond and Rene Tosoni from Ontario Corie Koskie from Manitoba There are probably others, but that is all that I can remember..
  16. Great article and great memories, Patrick. I was a baseball card guy also and the 1985 Topps Mack card was my second favorite - right behind some guy McGuire's rookies card. My memories of Mack include some clutch hits during the 15 game winning streak (to win 15 games in a row, several Twins were hot at the plate - including Mack). That winning streak is still a club record and was AWESOME! With it he Twins moved from fifth place to first, a lead they would not relinquish, which culminated with them winning the World Series. Mack was a terrific Rule 5 pick-up and an important part of that 1991 team. Although he struggled against the Braves in the World Series at the plate, he hit .333 against the Blue Jays in the ALCS.
  17. That and the $1.4M more offered to him the Tokyo Yomiuri Giants than the Twins offered him.
  18. Yup - lots of bad memories for Twins fans with the names in the article and those added in the comments. I'm assuming Frank Thomas would have been near the top of a similar list created for the 1990s.
  19. Patrick: Thanks for putting this together. Great memories of all these players. There was once a time when "speed killed" in MLB. I think of the Cardinals and Royals in the 1980s, or Lou Brock and Rickey Henderson's (130 stolen bases in 1982 - what??), entire careers.
  20. La-Z-boy: I like your optimism, but I'm not sure where you are getting your stats. New York reported 6200 new cases yesterday. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/
  21. It is possible, but only if Buxton is healthy enough to allow Das Wunderkind to spend most of his time playing right field.
  22. Thanks for the article Matt. Donaldson's signing initially appears to have wide-spread value. Hopefully that will continue onto the field! You wrote: "One interesting option for the position would have been (and still can be) Royce Lewis. Lewis had just four innings at third base in 2019 with Pensacola but almost strictly played there during his time with the Arizona Fall League. One of his knocks has been his potential to play shortstop which may lead to a position change to either the outfield or third base in the future. It’s not unusual for players to be poor at shortstop yet great at third base as Manny Machado proved when he confusingly changed positions in 2018. Knowing this, Lewis may possess the ability to play third base but only time will tell." Thanks for pointing that out. While Lewis did play most of his innings in the Arizona Fall League at 3rd (105), he also played 46 innings in center field and 34 innings at second base. It will be very interesting to see what the positions Lewis plays in the minors. Seems like the Twins are looking at several possibilities for him.
  23. Lefty - Thanks for clarifying. My point is the Twins bullpen was not average last year. Saying we do not have a shut down closer is like saying the Starting Pitching is average because we do not have a true ace. The Twins bullpen was tied for 2nd in saves, and 5th in holds, and tied for 9th in least blown saves in MLB. Rogers was in the top 10 in saves. And Rogers is capable to coming into the game at any time when it is on the line. You can't say that about Chapman. Also, the Yankees with Chapman had 3 more blown saves. The Brewers with Hader had 5 more blown saves. The Padres with Yates had fewer saves than the Twins and blew 3 more. The Twins bullpen was NOT average last season and is should be ranked as one of their top positions of strength this season.
  24. Lefty - I'm not sure why you feel the Twins bullpen was average last season. Here are some stats that show they were in the upper echelon of the league. WAR - 7.4 - 3rd overall FIP - 3.92 - 1st xFIP - 4.16 - 6th ERA - 4.17 - 10th K/9 - 9.71 - 9th BB/9 - 2.90 - 1st SIERA - 3.86 - 4th
  25. I would classify myself as "old school". That said, I firmly believe that each player should have their own "individual development plan" to maximize the potential. It has been successfully implemented in the business world, so it totally makes sense to have it in the sports world.
