  1. Sweet. We got out of that and it's still a 3-1 game. Now let's get Salazar off the mound and see if we can salvage this win!
  2. This is the frustrating thing about Gibson that gives his supporters an opening to defend him. He manages to put up sloppy demoralizing games like this but doesn't typically get completely shelled. By the time he leaves you feel like he gave up 10 runs but really it was only 3-4 and left with runners on base in an early inning. Leaving just enough of an opening for those reviewing his stats to claim he's actually not that bad. And it looks like that first QS will have to wait for another day.
  3. Woof. Whatever the opposite of finding the silver lining is, you just did that. Here's a fun game to play. If you had to place a bet right now, do you think Gibson takes this sloppy start and climbs the low hurdle to his first official Quality Start of the year?
  4. As much fun as it's been to watch the Twins this year compared to last, and as much as I really want to watch a game even when I know it's going the wrong way, Gibson has an amazingly strong ability to make me want to tune out and go do anything else. I don't even get mad about it anymore, just disengaged and disinterested out of hopelessness.
  5. That fastball sure gets out of the stadium in a hurry.
  6. I don't know why any of these guys are swinging at this junk. The hitter knew he got away with one on that "swinging bunt", he was grinning all the way back to the first base bag.
  7. Is there a laser show at Target Field tonight? Oh wait, no, that's just hitters teeing off on Gibson again.
  8. I presume some carefully selected matchups combined with short sample size. But I can't be bothered enough to even look up his stats to validate that theory.
  9. I don't think the two situations really compare. There's a little less (although definitely still some) heartburn involved when a promising mid-1st round pick peters out at the level of a part-time player. Jay was the 6th overall pick and 2nd overall pitcher, and from day 1 had the likely ceiling of being a reliever. While both are useful players, the latter situation is (for good reason) seen as having left a lot more upside on the table by never even giving yourself a real chance at an impact player.
  10. The implosion is certainly bizarre and the magnitude of the drop-off couldn't have been expected. But the severity of the drop-off also makes me believe there were some sort of critical flaws or warning signs that went overlooked in the Twins' evaluation of him. There's a reason the Yankees were giving him away. You'd hope that good scouting could reveal some of those reasons. I also accept that it's an inexact science and there's an information imbalance with the team that has the player and the team that is getting him. And sometimes sh*t just happens. I just wish it didn't seem like we were piling up more than our fair share of sh*t lately.
  11. I can't get too worked up over the Hicks trade since neither he nor JRM are ever going to be quality players and the front office that executed the trade is gone. The only gripes I have are that it signaled a poor evaluation of talent in even bothering to acquire JRM considering how epically he failed, and it also perpetuated this routine of dumping the starting center-fielder just to prematurely promote the next unfinished CF prospect. And all that with no backup plan to maintain competence if the prospect needs more development. Hopefully the new front office pumps the brakes on that kind of impatience.
  12. Sounds to me like Plouffe was the one actually blocking the prospects there. Also, Kepler had an option last year because they used it to start the season.
  13. The thing that really bakes my noodle is I now wonder if Mauer's greatness would have been diminished this much if he was seeing defenses/pitchers attack him 5-10 years ago the way they do now. He's never been a pull hitter, and when he tried to pull the ball a year or two ago he instead just became a double-play groundball machine. So did he just exploit the inefficiencies of the old-school game planning strategy all those years? Pulling the ball has never been his game, he does it by happenstance rather than intent. Would that be different if he'd been forced to adjust when he was 23?
  14. Don't forget Reed injured and not pitching yet. And as good as Berrios has looked it doesn't mean anything until he translates it to the majors. Sooooo...not a lot going on with the minor league pitching right now. At least Burdi is healthy and throwing strikes.
  15. I think a more interesting comparison or metric would be how often he drives in a runner when he comes to bat with RISP. Have a good AVG/OBP for those situations is a good start, but it's a lot more meaningful if the hitter is actually making an impact on the scoreboard in those situations. Sure, you can hit .320 with RISP but that doesn't say of often you put the ball in play. Just that you do so pretty safely on the occasions you do.
  16. I'm sure that's how it'll be reported. Unfortunately that's the report for most Gibson starts. A few clean innings and another 1-2 where it all unraveled and snowballed. Then he leaves early with a mess for the rest of the team to clean up.
  17. If they actually had the guts to cut bait on Gibson that soon we'll all be rejoicing over the change in attitude that signals for the Twins. I'm hopeful but don't necessarily expect it.
  18. Looks like the ump didn't want to be late for happy hour.
  19. He changes the leg kick usage from pitch-to-pitch at this point. No consistency. He'll use 2-3 different kicks/toe taps in the same at-bat. Definitely something going on there that needs to settle down.
  20. Also, I can't help but be amazed that Sano only saw 9 pitches in this game. It looks like he's being more aggressive early in the count instead of working his way to full counts regularly. Sure as heck seems to be working out for him.
  21. Twins' 3-4 hitters through the 3-0 start: .080/.178/.080 with a 36% strikeout rate. Who'd have thought? I guess lineup construction is irrelevant after all.
  22. No kidding, good grief. That ball was 30 feet short of the wall with too much hangtime to do anything. I'll never understand how Dick regularly gets fooled by those balls.
  23. Gibby has a weird history of worse performance when he's getting more strikeouts. I frankly don't understand it, but it jumps out consistently in his stats over time. I want to be encouraged since I some good signs. But overall this was a pretty baseline Gibby start. A few good innings, a couple that got away from him, and leaving early with runners on base for the bullpen to clean up. Against a team that has been scuffling offensively all series. I'll hold off judging too harshly on one appearance but I don't think he convinced any skeptics that his adjustments are making a difference.
  24. I don't think anyone is griping about the lack of homeruns specifically. The frustration is with the lack of aggression he shows in attacking pitchers. You don't have to hit homeruns to attack a pitcher. But you do have to have a mindset that you're looking to do more than draw a walk or slap an opposite field liner somewhere. And nobody in this thread is talking about money. It seems like that comes up more often as a strawman argument than it does as an actual criticism. The only time I typically see it brought up anymore is when people suspect Mauer is getting more playing time and premier lineup spots than his performance sometimes dictates he should.
