  1. I was thinking about something like this today too. To take it a step further you could account for outs in the inning as well. Guy on 3rd with no outs shouldn't count against the new pitcher because they can score even on a fly out or slow ground out. Things like that should be considered. But overall I like the idea of splitting the responsibility for the runners.
  2. Seems like that's a lost art now with all the replay reviews to settle disputes.
  3. It's been a long time since I could look at a Twins' box score and see we used 5 pitchers all with an ERA at or under 3.00.
  4. ...which creates one of the loopholes I was referring to. While not a "masking agent" in the sense it hides the illegal PED from a positive test, if legal substances are inseparable from illegal ones on a test then it gives the athlete an opportunity to challenge the tests and get off the hook.
  5. I'm not commenting on the fairness or reasonableness of the drug testing program, but my understanding is a lot of legal supplements are generally banned because they can mask the use of the actual illegal PEDs. Allowing them creates an easy loophole that would just be mercilessly abused otherwise.
  6. As evidenced by the fact that almost no notable NFL or NBA players ever get busted despite their athletes looking like real life supreheros.
  7. I flat out admit I don't understand anything about Santiago. The dude just seems to get the job done despite logic and stats saying it doesn't make any sense. Maybe he's the inverse Ricky Nolasco that out-pitches his FIP by a run instead of lagging it by a run. My stance is to be happy and enjoy it for as long as it lasts. No need as a fan to pick it apart with questions while it's working.
  8. I'd much rather have a dominant reliever that can go 2/3 innings than a #4 starter, and I'd guess Duffey would prefer to be one of the best relievers in baseball over being a middling starter. Everyone likes to have an important role that they can execute well and the key bullpen pitchers are heralded more than the back end rotation guys these days. It's not a step down by any means. Find someone else to fill those back-end spots and let's see if Duffey can really carve out an anchor spot in the bullpen. The impact of having a reliever that can salvage short (but not yet hopeless) starts without burning half the bullpen is pretty huge in the modern game.
  9. Some of Buxton's best games in September came against pretty good big league pitchers. That was one of the reasons for optimism. There was an article on here or somewhere that analyzed who he was getting his hits against in order to see if it was legit or if he just feasted on cup-of-coffee guys. It still doesn't mean that September was a sure breakout moment, but it added credibility to what he was doing at least.
  10. The assertion being made here is we pretty well do know by now. What are 5 more starts going to tell you that the first 101 didn't already? He's 29 and has never put it together for more than a few weeks at a time. The only reason to let him keep going at this point is because there's nobody really forcing him out of the rotation yet.
  11. Sample size of 2 for May pitching stats, and 3 for June. I wouldn't put a lot of faith in that pattern holding weight. By the time you wait it out he may have handed the team several more losses and wracked the bullpen.
  12. Sano wore the golden sombrero a couple days ago and I didn't see any mobs forming outside the gates. You get leeway for a bad game or even a week when you otherwise perform well. That's how baseball goes.
  13. That haircut. Woah. You could have told me that thumbnail image was from 1992 and I wouldn't have even questioned it. Looks like he's going for the Ricky 'Wild Thing' Vaughn look.
  14. I could kind of see that. And not as much pressure to go deep in the games in that case, since he'll be yanked for a PH by the time he'd usually be knocked out of an AL game anyways.
  15. I'm not even sure Gibby is a 4-5 starter at this point. At least not on a competitive team. He consistently can't even go 6 innings, which is generally all you ask of back-end guy. Just be an innings eater and don't dig too big of a hole. Then he goes and puts the team in a hole and burns 3-4 relievers almost every time he's out there.
  16. Hoping to win the game on a hit to the outfield instead of counting on this lineup to string together more hits?
  17. This ump isn't exactly 'selling' his calls.
  18. Alright, where's that rally monkey when you need him...
  19. I know it's a Monday but the crowd looks a little sparse for a winning team on a nice night this early in the season. This club has some work to do to consistently get the fans back in the stadium.
  20. I always really liked Polanco. It's amazing he's flown under the radar so much. He's just so consistent. Not great at anything but pretty good at just about everything you'd want from him. Exactly the kind of steady hand a winning team needs.
  21. Looks like Kohl Stewart had another tough game. 4 IP, 2H, 4BB, 3R, 0ER, 1SO, took his 3rd L of the season already. I'm starving for some signs of hope in the minor league pitching ranks. It's basically Berrios or bust this year the way things are going.
  22. That's what I've been thinking too, but I do wonder if that fastball/slider would play up out of the pen if he focused on them and shelved the changeup and sinker that doesn't sink.
  23. Agreed. I'd like to see what Mejia can do with an extended run to settle in. He's had some early jitters to shake off but hasn't looked lost yet. As long as he's surviving I say let him keep working to see what he's got up here.
