Larnach and Miranda Optioned. Balazovic Reassigned
tarheeltwinsfan replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
This looks amazing...except, "Where are the pitchers?" Like that classic Wendy's commercial: "Where's the beef?" -
What a waste of money to have signed Margot and DeSclafani. Santana is a healthy, professional hitter, who is a good fielding first baseman.

Three really good bullpen pitchers are usually less expensive than one really good starter. Compare Duran, Jax and Stewart to Lopez or Gray. Also 6 really good bullpen pitchers may pitch 300 to 360 innings total, compared to 2 really good starting pitchers, pitching 300-360 innings total. That seems to be the direction MLB is headed. Also it eliminates the problem of a pitcher having to pitch 2-3 times in a game to the same batters. Statistics show that a pitcher is less effective the 3rd time through the order. Finally, and I have not seen figures to back this hypothesis, there may be less strain on a pitcher's arm, elbow and shoulder by pitching just a few innings every 2-3 days vs. a starter pitching 7-9 innings on one occasion. Cody, your article was a breath of fresh air on this controversial subject.

1968 Topps and the Minnesota Twins
tarheeltwinsfan commented on Al from SoDak's blog entry in Al from SoDak
Thank you for doing the year 1968. I love baseball, but I missed that year of baseball and baseball cards, since I was in the infantry in Korea beginning in February, 1968. I, and many other American soldiers, were sent to Korea in February and March, 1968, instead of being sent to Vietnam, because at the end of January, 1968, the North Koreans sent a 31 man commando team into South Korea through the DMZ to kill the South Korean president. They failed - read about "The Blue House Raid" of 1968. A few days after that raid, the North Koreans captured a US Navy ship, the USS Pueblo, killing one sailor (Duane Hodges) and took the other 82 US sailors prisoner for the rest of 1968, until they were released around Christmas, 1968. I must say that baseball was not one of my top priorities while I was stationed in and around the Korean DMZ in 1968, where 6 members of my 20-25 man platoon (Michael Rymarczuk from Philadelphia, Cleveland Davis from Gainesville, Florida, Private Um from South Korea, Earl Jeffrey from Dennison, Texas, Private Kwan from South Korea and Reese Weathers from Louisville, Kentucky) were shot and 2 (Michael and Kwan) died, in 4 separate firefights with the North Koreans in the summer of 1968. I say this not to brag, nor to seek thanks nor sympathy, but to simply say that I have been very blessed to have been able to serve my country and to be here now to tell you about my 1968. We live in a great country. We have serious problems now, but I truly believe that we Americans will rise to the occasion and do what is necessary to preserve our nation. I am so glad to be here to be able to drive to Fort Myers from my home in North Carolina and to attend spring training for the past 6 years (except the covid year) and to have lunch with a 1968 DMZ army buddy in Bonita Springs, Florida. I have a responsibility to remember my army buddies and to tell people about them and what we, and others, did in Korea in 1968. God bless the Korean DMZ vets and God bless America.- 4 comments

Rats. One of the reasons I picked these games to see on our annual spring training trip to Ft. Myers, was to see fellow North Carolinian, Walker Jenkins, play baseball. But like they say, you pay your money and you take your chances. Hope it is a minor injury.

1964 Topps Giants and the Minnesota Twins
tarheeltwinsfan commented on Al from SoDak's blog entry in Al from SoDak
Great fun reading your posts and seeing these cards from the past. "Little Potato" was my favorite pitcher, since I had been a Washington Senators fan before they moved to The Far North. In fact, I requested, and got, Pascual's number on my high school baseball team. Like Pascual, my curveball was legendry. However, my was legendry for allowing many home runs, when I was able to get it over the plate, that is.- 8 comments

Twins Announce Spring Breakout Roster
tarheeltwinsfan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Squirrel, My wife and I will be at those 2 games on Saturday also. The prospects game will be at the same field immediately after the major leaguers play. We can stay in our same seats. I'm in section 113 about the 4th row down from the main entrance level, behind the Twins dugout. Stop by and say hello. I'll have an olive green Second Infantry Division baseball style hat on and sitting with my wife.- 23 replies

Twins 2024 Position Analysis: Shortstop
tarheeltwinsfan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
When I was in the Army, C-4 was packed in the back of claymore mines. It provided the explosive power to propel the little metal balls toward the enemy. The C-4 needed an electric charge to ignite the C-4. I contend that Carlos Correa's injury- hampered performance of 2023 will be the ignition to charge the explosive power of C4 and the rest of this Twins' team to do what it takes to get to the World Series and to win it. There is something special about this Twins team. Let the games begin!- 17 replies

Interesting question and interesting discussion. Having thought about it and read all the posts, I am of the opinion that Duran needs to be left at relief pitcher and be available for the 9th inning. Duran deserves to know what to expect as far as when he might be used in a game, so he can have a regular routine.

This is great news for me, since I hate strikeouts when the Twins are batting. Because of this and Santana's good fielding at 1B, and Buck, C4 and Lewis being healthy and Julien having more experience at 2B...I am looking forward to better defense and offense from the Twins. More runs scored by the Twins and less runs allowed. Oops, I forgot about losing Sonny Gray and Maeda and (I never thought I'd say this)...Pagan. The Twins main off-season need was a #1 or #2 starting pitcher. I think the stronger bullpen is great, but will this be enough to make up for the loss of Gray and Maeda? That is the big question for me going into 2024.

Why am I a fan of this (fake) poverty franchise?
tarheeltwinsfan replied to AZDane's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I appreciate Mr. Pohlad's service to our country in WWII in an infantry unit. 3 purple hearts says it all for me. -
Good point Doc. Thanks.

Are you referring to Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin? Austin Martin can't hit homeruns and he has not played one game in the major leagues yet. See Doc, I did not agree with you about Martin, but that does not mean I won't respect you in the morning. Keep on writing Doc. You are one of my favorite writers.

Doc, Don't go. It is almost spring and hope springs eternal. Right now the Twins are tied for first place. You made some good points, but I did not agree with everything you wrote. Sorta like voting for a politician...I don't agree with everything any politician says or does, but just have to pick the one who makes the most sense to me. You are one of the posters who has made the most sense to me through the years. I look forward to your continued posts.

Plus the Twins would still have the minor league Gold Glove SS to trade for a pitcher.

Twins A Finalist for Utility-man Kiké Hernandez's Services
tarheeltwinsfan replied to wiguy94's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
As Will Rogers said: "All I know is what I read in the newspapers." In my opinion, the Twins FO is not going to sign Hernandez. This is an example of possibly the Twins called the agent involved in October to inquire, but nothing was done, an the agent is using this as leverage to motivate some other team's FO to sign Kiki. I think this sort of thing goes on a lot more than we realize. -
