  1. Ugh...Grossman at DH. Not good.
  2. Funny, because I was actually thinking of referring to myself as the Justin Haley of the game threads...but then what if Justin Haley looks good and becomes a solid option out of the pen? Then I'm doing game threads every other day!
  3. If you win on opening day, you want to keep the momentum going. If you lose on opening day, you want to get right back on that horse. I've never understood the day off other than an excuse for the players to go out and hang one on and they need a day to recover.
  4. I consider myself a bottom of the barrel kind of guy (don't tell my wife). When you are truly desperate, call me in from the bullpen.
  5. I'm gonna restore the optimism buzz by asking this - would it be too much to have the announcer say "Minnesota Twins fans, let's hear it for your AL Central leading Twins!"? In other related optimistic notes, the Twins are ranked 2nd in pitching for all of MLB! Gotta strike while the iron is hot!
  6. Well, in a SSS Park has 12 HR in 215 AB and a .191 BA with a .684 OPS. I'll give him credit for looking good in spring after his wrist surgery. Players were surprised by the move and said that his swing looked really good. Park's SSS of MLB at bats has him hitting home runs at a .056 clip or about 1 in every 19 at bats. By comparison, Miguel Cabrera hits home runs at pretty much the same rate 446/7853. The difference is that Cabrera gets lots of other hits to go with the home runs. Let's face it, there is no denying Parks power as he registered some long home runs last year. The problem is the all or nothing approach. As far as Robbie Grossman at DH, walking is not what you pay a DH to do. OPS is what you want with an emphasis on the S. So, that needs to be solved. Is Park the answer? Is Vargas the answer? Dunno, but taking Park off the 40 man certainly reduced the options.
  7. It's one game and I'm not peeing on the parade. Considering it's been 9 seasons since we won an opener, let's take it and run. From what I can see in one game, we have some issues...but the outfield isn't one of them. DH is. That will need to be fixed. Having a DH that isn't a threat to hit double digit home runs for a year is an issue. Agree with the left side of the infield assessment - do the routine, catch the balls that you should catch and make the throws that you need to make and we are good. Fly balls are an adventure for Sano though...and that will come back to bite us. It seemed to me that the ump had a pretty small zone. While Buxton didn't get a hit, he did have one really good at bat that drove up the pitch count. If the young guys can have quality at bats, it really helps to wear down a pitcher and Duffy was clearly the tougher pitcher...but he didn't win. That's baseball.
  8. We had to score 1 to win anyway.
  9. Robbie Grossman at DH...that's all you need to hear to know that the roster needs to change quickly.
  10. 3-3 tie...confirmed that we have a AAA squad.
  11. I've got an ad up on my screen for "NAPLES BEST REALTOR"...and then his hook line is 'To me it's all about "feeling it" from you.'....whaaa? I don't even know what that means...and I don't think I want to know either. I just feel creeped out looking at the ad.
  12. I don't know that I've ever seen it before where our AAA squad has more power hitters than our MLB squad. Also, if we tie, does that mean that we have a AAA MLB squad? JKJKJK.
  13. I'm pulling for Park to go yard in the 9th to break the tie.
  14. Yeah...He has always looked solid at first when he fills in for Mauer.
  15. My understanding on Rule 5's is that they have to STAY on the 25 man roster all year or be offered back to Boston for 25K (we paid 50K). So, it isn't like this is a temporary thing. If he isn't truly ready, we are playing a man down all year.
  16. People don't buy tickets to see the 2nd long reliever. People will buy tickets to see a guy hit a baseball 450 feet though.
  17. Yes it is...so, if we put on our GM hat and ask ourselves this question - Given the fact that the roster is bad and that we are probably going to lose a lot of games, doesn't it makes sense to keep the players that will put the most butts in the seats? Everybody digs the long ball...no one digs the long reliever.
  18. Well, according to Reusse (insert comment bashing PR here), the players were shocked and "rolling their eyes" when the news came in about Park. Perkins said in all his spring training years, this one was the biggest shock because "his swing looks way better". This much I know...when the clubhouse is questioning the front office decisions, it's not good.
  19. True dat, but when you look at the roster...in particular our pitching staff...it seems pretty clear that we will have to score a lot of runs to win games. So, knowing that, why send the guy who can send it into the seats (Park) to AAA? Robbie Grossman at DH? I don't see that producing many runs. I get the "built for 162" thing, but when you start off 0-9, the other 153 are pretty meaningless.
  20. The thing that I'm struggling with on the Park decision is that he struggled with guys who could throw 95 mph heat last year. By all reports, he has worked on it and made big improvements. His reward? Back to the minors. What kind of a message does that send to him and the rest of the guys in the minors? Work hard and improve on your weaknesses and you won't be rewarded....but work hard and improve on your weaknesses!
  21. I'm with spycake. I jumped off the Tonkin bandwagon quite a while back. He isn't fooling anyone with the heater and no one is swinging at the hook. His fastball has no movement...other than moving into the seats rather quickly.
  22. You know what that would make him? A lollygagger!
