  1. Not a fan of the over 30 crowd. Realistically, what would you expect in return for Erv? No team is going to be willing to part with a young promising arm for him. You could try to shore up short stop or catcher with someone young, but I don't see teams willing to give that for Erv. I just don't see us being able to trade anyone including Dozier for anything of equal value, but if you are going to trade someone, it should be Erv as his productive years are waning and will be gone by the time we are in contention. My thinking for next year is to keep Erv and throw the young guys in the rotation to see who swims. Maybe Erv can teach them a thing or two.
  2. “I just keep losing. I mean, some people just...are supposed to lose? For balance in the universe? I mean, like, are there just some people on earth who...are supposed to be here just to make it easier for the winners?” ― Donald Glover
  3. "Winning may teach you how to celebrate, but losing teaches you how to survive."
  4. After a frustrating season, many of you want to vent...and I say vent away if that makes you feel better. I feel your pain! However, in times like these, I like to think of the coach who endured more than his fair share of putrid play on the field...no, not Paul Molitor. Rather, the oft forgotten, oft quoted John McKay. John McKay was head coach of the putrid 1976 and 1977 Buccaneers teams. They combined for an atrocious 2-26 record including 26 straight losses. They were also shut out a combined 11 times in 28 games as their starting QBs combined to throw 12 TDs to 50 INTs during this 2 year run. Awful...just awful. Luckily for the Bucs, their head coach had quite a sense of humor. Here are some of his better lines: “We didn’t tackle well today, but we made up for it by not blocking”. “Three or four plane crashes and we’re in the playoffs.” * On the execution of the Bucs offense - “I think it’s a good idea.” * On the significance of experience - “If you have everyone back from a team that lost 10 games, experience isn’t too important.” * On why coaching an expansion team is a religious experience - “You do a lot of praying, but most of the time the answer is `No.’ ” So, rather than venting, what quotable quote would you use to describe our 2016 Minnesota Twins?
  5. It's happening all over in America. It is age discrimination, but the corporate attorneys have it figured out exactly how many of each sex, age, race that they can lay off without getting into trouble. If they lay off 1 younger person for every 3 older people, 1 man for every 3 women or vice versa, etc.. It stinks, but that's the country we live in. My day of being ushered out the door is soon approaching. Oh, and if you have 25+ years in with the same company, it is no longer a good thing. It puts a target on your back.
  6. I would argue that Buxton has figured it out. Early on, he was up at the plate guessing and reacting. Now, he's looking for a particular pitch to hit and anticipating. His swing early on was long and loopy, he seems to have shortened it up. I do think that the difference between MLB pitching and MiLB pitching is very significant in some ways and not so different in others. The window to hit a pitched baseball is very small. That's why they try to teach guys to swing with the barrel of the bat in the hitting zone for as long as possible (and we are talking about thousanths of a second). A good swing in the minors should translate to a good swing in the majors. What the guys coming up haven't seen is the explosive breaking breaking balls and fastballs that dart and they can easily get caught up in that and start trying to do something other than what got them promoted in the first place...the good swing. I really think that is what happened to Buxton.
  7. I did that once, but I overstepped my bounds as someone else had already spoken for the game thread for that day. I am more of a spur of the moment kind of writer. I'm unable to consistently awaken the creative side of my brain like RB can do at any time.
  8. Very sorry to hear that Jerr. Unfortunately, it is the route that corporate America is taking. They get rid of the the experience and bring in the low cost outsource from some 3rd world country...then they wonder why quality is so low....frustrating. I feel your pain. However, here on TwinsDaily, the season NEVER ends! There is no low cost alternative because we are the low cost alternative! And we offer quality! Whooooo! We are the answer to all of America's problems. We should collectively run for president. Hey, speaking of president, did anyone see that Dave St. Pete called our team sh*tty? I mean, yeah, we are...but isn't he part of the sh*tty? Is that the very definition of the pot calling the kettle sh*tty?
  9. Did I see a UZR of -39.7 at 2B and -14.2 at SS? That's brutal!
  10. The lack of a FA market drags down Dozier's value too. How do you trade for a quality starting pitcher with so few on the market? It's not like another team can just plug someone else in. Pitching is gold and teams want to hang on to it.
  11. A nobrainer for any organization with the #1 pick...now which pitcher is where it can get tough.
  12. No way you do a 3 year deal for any 30+ year old pitcher. Not smart. Weaver has been bad this year but might want to reunite with Erv. However, he's 33 and coming off a horrible year. Would you rather take a chance on him or a young guy? I'd go with a young guy in our own system before him.
  13. No but now the rest of the team looks much worse.
  14. Off topic - who do you think does the Twins Caravan next year? Dozier again? Kepler? Buxton? They need popular names to bring out the fans. Going on the tour and not having fans show up wouldn't look good. Going on tour with guys who don't even make the team wouldn't be good.
  15. There's a part of me that realizes that years from now, when all this has passed, that high/lowlite will be replayed over and over in reflection of one of worst seasons ever in Twins baseball.
  16. Yep...and I kind of factor that into the whole scenario. I'm sure the people who stayed home were happy that they did.
  17. Yesterday I believe I saw what I can only describe as the lowest of low points in a season full of low points. Be assured, I'm not a gloom and doom guy. Certainly Dozier's remarkable 2nd half has been fun to watch. Buxton drilling a Verlander fast ball deep into the center field seats marked, for me, the arrival of Byron Buxton. That was a great at bat off a great pitcher. However, the 9th inning of the first game was sickening, embarrassing...use whatever word you would like. When an intentional walk yields a gift run via a wild pitch...I can't even put it into words. If I were coaching my son's little league team and that happened, I would be frustrated. I can't imagine what Paul Molitor felt. As if that wasn't enough, Michael Tonkin came in to serve up a 3 run dinger, a couple more hits a couple more walks, another wild pitch. With the score 3-2, the ninth inning yielded three wild pitches, five walks, two singles, and a home run for a total of 6 runs. If you haven't seen the wild pitch/intentional ball four thrown by Light, it didn't just barely miss the catchers mitt. It sailed about 10 feet over Centeno. Centeno is not a tall man, but had we brought in Kevin Garnett to catch, it would have been well out of his reach...and that's a man with a lot of reach! So, my question to you is - what is your low point for the year?
  18. Full disclosure, I've never been an big Tonkin fan. Until today, I didn't look at the numbers. What I do look at is his pitches and here's what I see. 1. A fastball that he throws hard with no movement. I suspect that he gets it by AAA guys, but big league hitters have seen 96 mph plenty of times. 2. A pretty good curve ball that he just doesn't throw consistently for strikes. 3. A change up that isn't effective. I suspect that hitters have gotten the word to sit on the fast ball and when they do, they hit it hard.
  19. How'd we ever win 55? It's a miracle Lollygaggers!
  20. Very astute of Dick...has Gladden let any F-bombs fly today? Gotta figure the 5 second delay has come in rather useful this year.
  21. If I'm Molly in the post game presser, I don't know if I can keep it together. How do you look Pat Light and Michael Tonkin in the eye and not have your head explode?
  22. I had to step away after the first wild pitch...I came back and they were still batting. OK, anyone who thinks Tonkin is good isn't watching. I know he throws hard and there are times he looks like he belongs in the majors, but his fast ball is soooooo straight. He is very hitable when hitters sit on his fastball.
  23. My 13 year old can walk a guy intentionally without throwing it to the backstop. Unbelievable!
  24. Did he just throw a wild pitch on an intentional walk?
