Oh, are you left-handed? The thing does turn around, you know.

Calling someone the “No. 5” starter is somewhat a function of the health of the rest of the rotation. This year, the Twins have been fortunate in only needing four starts outside of Berrios-Odo-Gibson-Perez-Pineda, and two of those four starts were Stewart’s 26th-man starts. So while I see what you did in using the guy with the fifth-most starts as your comparison poin, that’s not completely accurate. For example, last year Romero started 11 times, but he was really only the No. 5 starter for the six weeks or so when he was in the rotation with Lance Lynn. For a few starts, he was actually the No. 4. In reality, the No. 5 starter last year was the amalgamation of most of Romero’s starts, plus the starts from Kohl Stewart, Gabriel Moya, Ervin Santana, Stephen Gonsalves, Adalberto Mejia, Chase DeJong and a few others. So yeah, I’ll take 2019 Pineda over that cohort. And the same would apply to the partial seasons of Colon and Milone. In 2018 Colon had the fifth-highest number of starts, but during a good part of his time with the Twins he was really the No. 4 starter behind Santana, Gibson, and Berrios, with guys like Dillon Gee, Adalberto Mejia, and Felix Jorge serving as the No. 5. The No. 5 starter comparison for that year should also include Ryan Tepesch and Phil Hughes. I’ll take Pineda over that cohort as well. The bottom line is that Pineda’s ERA+ is currently 89. Take out three late-April starts and he’s probably over 100. If he pitches to a 100 ERA+ for another 15-18 starts and is outpitched by Perez, Pineda will very much have been an outstanding No. 5.

This probably isn't the "give some of it back" you are referring to, but at some point in each game I listen to on the radio, I also hear the invitation from Joe to join him and his wife in giving to Gillette Children's Hospital. That also speaks to legacy.

But if "bombas" is plural, either order works. But since Schoop started things, let's go ahead and use your suggested order.

Yesterday I was ripping on Gladden as an analyst. Case in point: Discussing Porcello making adjustments in how long he holds the set position, he says... "There's nothing legal about it, as long as he comes to a stop." Dan, "nothing legal" means that you CAN'T do it, not that you can.

Yeah, but Leon is getting larger.
  7. IndianaTwin
That would be more than just a flesh wound.

And perhaps I should have added... Does this dichotomy say more about them, or about us?

I am a big Kirby Puckett fan. I also recognize that all of us are human, with most of us not having our humanity exposed to the degree that it is for professional athletes. Yet, I find it interesting that the off-the-field activities of Puckett have largely been pushed back into the collective recesses of our minds. By contrast, the off-the-field activities of Mauer, namely that of cashing a large check appropriately offered to him by ownership, serve as his primary legacy in the minds of too many "fans."

GIven that tonight's game is with the Bostonians, I offer this ditty from Dr. Frasier Crane as the theme song for tonight's offensive output...

Thank you for mentioning Hughes. I was waiting for the appropriate time to drop his name into the mix. Controllable through next year, and he served well as a closer in Iglesias' absence last year.

    Aw, you beat me...

Oh, I liked him plenty as a player.

It was SO much better on the road trip when Gladden was on vacation and Provus and Atteberry were together.

He's been fun on the radio as well!

Bench on the radio, joking about exit velocity and launch angle: "People ask me about my exit velocity and launch angle. I would just say, 'If it went over the fence, it had enough exit velocity and launch angle."

Joe is in the radio booth. Talking about Sept. 30, he said that while Hrbek is regularly around the park, he is rarely down in the clubhouse. When Joe went back to the clubhouse to put on the catcher's equipment, the first person he saw was Hrbek, who was uncharacteristically in the hallway. When Hrbek asked what he was doing and Joe said he was going to put on the gear, they were able to share tears.

    And Well Played, Twins.

Rocco: We play a lot of games, but there's only one night when Joe is here and has his number retired. We were able to recognize him in private in the clubhouse with a lot of players that came in to be with him.

I don't have access to watching the festivities on TV, but perhaps someone will post the pregame show to Youtube or something like that (hint, hint). However, I'm listening on the radio. Here are some clips from interviews. Bobby Bowden -- "We wanted you to play football, but you were too good at baseball, and you made the right decision." Ron Gardenhire -- (didn't think to start typing)Joe Vavra -- (see Gardy)Drew Butera -- (see VavraSteve Liddelll -- Mom would say, "Why don't you tell Joe to quit taking those strikes down the middle." I'd say, "Mom, he's got three batting titles already." Jake Odorizzi -- "Greatest teammate I ever had."Byron Buxton -- "Meeting him for the first time was a dream come true."Max Kepler -- "When you were playing with a legend, you can't take it for granted."Terry Ryan -- (Talked about the draft process and how they came to focus on Mauer around the end of May.) (On whether there was pressure in drafting a hometown player:) There was more pressure on Joe than there was on the Twins. Every game in high school he had about 35 or 40 scouts. After the season got going, that dwindled, because the teams drafting in the middle knew he wasn't going to last that long.

Thank goodness they traded Doug Mintkiewiczx and A.J. Pierzinski. I never could get those right.

This is where we swoop in and sign him, with us paying just the minimum and LA picking up the remainder of his salary right? With the added cost of putting Wes Johnson up for a week in Rochester to work out the kinks, that could be a great get.

    "Yu-ni-es-ki Bet-an-court, Lu-cas Du-da," Steve Rushin once typed.

Needless to say, more good seats are becoming available.
