  1. Thanks for sharing. I'm walking the Alzheimer's journey with my mom these days as well. Though we never played catch, she would put baseball cards in my school lunch box from time to time. Would that when I'm 92, as she turned in July, if people ask how I'm doing, I can similarly say, "I'm content." I was at the Society for American Baseball Research convention in Cleveland a few weeks ago. I went to a session by the "Baseball Memories" group, an organization that has developed and delivered baseball reminiscence programs since 2015, in partnership with local and national organizations such as the Alzheimer's Association. See https://sabrbaseballmemories.org/.
  2. But contracts are offered or not offered and signed or not signed with draft compensation picks as part of the consideration. Can you think of examples where they have voided something like draft picks that were already “earned” by a team?
  3. Turns out we would have been wishing for Tyler Mahle.
  4. Tommy John innings pitched after surgery: 2544.2 Tommy John innings pitched before surgery: 2165.2 Active leaders in innings pitched: Justin Verlander: 3571.1 Max Scherzer: 3004.0 Chris Sale: 2213.0 Jose Quintana: 2141. I also like how his baseball-reference.com page says: "1975 Did not play - Eponymous Surgical Procedure." The big brick building in Cooperstown says, "National Hall of FAME," not "National Hall of Best Players." In my mind, TJ was close enough to making it as a player that the TJS puts him over the top for inclusion.
  5. I think there's a reasonable chance the QO goes away going forward. But realistically, I don't think it can change this year. Salient dates are: Latest possible day for World Series: October 31 QO decisions due from teams: Nov. 5 Decision deadline by player: Nov. 15 Conclusion of CBA: December 1 If it's like last time, there will be a flurry of activity between Nov. 15 and Dec. 1. At least some free agent decisions will have been made by the time the lockout begins. The likelihood of changing those retroactively is very slim.
  6. Since 2020, the roster has only expanded to 28 on September 1. Most teams add the one pitcher allowed, plus an additional hitter.
  7. Could the mathematician in you bump the pixel count up a little? 😀
  8. I’ll look forward to the series and I’m sure you’ll cover this then, but how many trips did you do? Lots of one-offs or were you able to string a lot together?
  9. That's a great quote. It fits alongside the Mark Twain quote about three kinds of lies -- lies, damn lies and statistics -- and my college prof who taught us to question every single statistic we see to consider whether there might be something in the context that is leading to bias. Context, context, context. (Aside: While questioning data and assumptions is good and appropriate in many contexts, I've learned over 40 years of marriage that it's not always a good approach in conversations with one's spouse. 🤣)
  10. As a Fever season ticket holder, I didn’t like the outcome, but the recent Fever/Lynx game was awesome to watch. Miles was amazing. I also find the WNBA much more enjoyable to watch than NBA. And I find women’s college basketball much more fun. I think both also provide for a much better family experience.
  11. Hmm, it’s a mutual option and those are so rarely picked up by both that I’d discounted the possibility. But I could see this as a possibility that could have interest from both parties.
  12. That’s why I copped out and didn’t name a position. 🤣 More seriously, you’re right — there aren’t blatantly obvious positions. Catcher makes sense. If they are willing to pay for Hoffman, maybe another reliever. Otherwise offensively, I’d just say “anywhere.” This feels like a really good floor, but if they get a thumper who can bat cleanup, they have the flexibility to get that person on the lineup.
  13. Grrr. Does Netflix have a 10-day opt out or somesuch?
  14. Something Bell, Solano and Santana have in common is that they were each generally disparaged on TD when signed and by midseason people were often liking the signing. It’s almost like the front office knows something and has access to information we don’t.
  15. With only Minter and Rogers not under control for next year, right? And Ryan, Lopez, Bradley, Ober, Prielipp, Matthews, Rojas, Abel, et al., in the rotation. And only losing Bell and likely Jeffers from the offense, adding Jenkins and others. And an owner saying he’s ready to increase payroll. Me likey.
  16. I suspect there’s a strong desire to activate Buxton by Thursday night.
  17. So DFA Caratini and pay him $7M not to catch next season AND enter the offseason with only Jackson on the roster? Don’t think that’s going to happen.
  18. My understanding is there are two ways to get the extra pick through PPI: 1. Win ROY. Culpepper would not be eligible for this, assuming he stays up the rest of the year. 2. Finish top 3 in MVP or CYA before reaching arbitration. I think this is where the 60 day baseline comes to play. Though it seems unlikely he will accomplish this, he would be eligible for this option. (Though I think it especially unlikely on the CYA side. 🤣) That ignores the other parts of the rules like being in prospect rankings, etc.
  19. Teams are allotted an amount they can spend in giving bonuses to international signings. They can trade their allotment to another team in increments of $250,000. Though not common, it happens on a somewhat routine basis.
  20. Trading your "best pitching prospect" doesn't seem as bad when you consider that guys like Matthews, Prielipp and Rojas, even Festa and Abel are not "prospects" by virtue of being a few innings or service days past the rookie definition.
