  1. Speaking of the Byrds, my favorite folkie did an album of all Woody Guthrie songs, including "Turn, Turn, Turn." When introducing the song in concert, the folkie describes it as being "co-written with God," but always recounts asking Woody, "How do you handle the royalties?" John McCutcheon's version, with The Steel Wheels: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OavTMULdP1c
  2. I note that Means' ERA+ last year was 102, which seems about right.
  3. This week: Shoemaker-Berrios-Pineda-off day-Dobnak-Happ-Shoemaker Next week lines up for: Berrios-Pineda-Dobnak-(Maeda is eligible to come back from what seems pretty minor.) Starting pitcher availability hasn't really been an issue and doesn't appear to be a big deal going forward.
  4. Concur on needing patience. I think it's also important to recognize what is and isn't meant by a "pitching pipeline." Six Cleveland pitchers were named in the article -- Kluber, Bauer, Clevinger, Bieber, Civale and Plesac -- but it's worth noting that they debuted in six different seasons over a nine-year period. Six guys that good in nine years is impressive, but it's not like they averaging one or two new studs per year, which is how people seem to perceive it. Similarly, I'd note that during that string, though Cleveland was always competitive, they only won their division three times during that run, 2016, 2017, and 2018. Of those six guys, only Clevinger and Bieber debuted during the pennant-winning seasons, with Clevinger making 10 starts in 2016 and Bieber 19 starts in 2018. In other words, they weren't debuting new guys while they were winning pennants.
  5. Had to do some digging. Thank you, Google. Guess I’m Thick as a Brick.
  6. Elsewhere, Atlanta is up 20-0 on Pittsburgh, thanks in part to a grand slam from Ehire. But you know what they say. When you spot Ian Anderson 20 runs, he’s tough to beat.
  7. Sorry, folks. Father-in-law moved to the retirement home three weeks ago, and I’m shot from spending the day getting ready for a garage sale, so all I could come up with was a couple frozen chicken chimichangas in the air fryer.
  8. If Farrell’s girlfriend/wife trims his hair, is that a Honeycutt?
  9. Speaking of, I was at a high school game this week and nearly saw my first 2-5-3 putout on a dropped third strike. Runner on second, one out, 1-2 count. Runner tries to steal, ball is in the dirt, but batter swings. Catcher comes up clean and tries to throw out the runner at third. Runner will be safe easily, so third baseman comes off the base and fires to first, nearly getting the relatively slow batter/runner.
  10. Another potential way of thinking of the Thorpe vs. Dobnak -- who do you call up discussion is to say that they called up Thorpe for the seven-inning doubleheader game, figuring that Dobnak will get further stretched out for when they need someone to start nine-inning games. Shoemaker probably bought himself at least another start today, particularly with Pineda going down for a start or two. EDIT TO ADD: With Pineda missing the start on the 18th and not going on the IL until the 19th, I don't think they can back date all the way back to the 13th. They can only back date three days to the 16th, if I understand it correctly. So now with Berrios/Thorpe on the 20th (Thursday) and Maeda on the 21st (Friday), they can either go with Happ on Saturday and Ober on Sunday OR they could go with Dobnak on five days rest on Saturday and give Happ an extra day to go on Sunday. Either way, they have Shoemaker, Berrios and (hopefully) Pineda next week for Baltimore. So, while they didn't know that Pineda was going to go on the IL, obviously, I think they covered their bases well.
  11. I didn't get to watch much, but the word on Ober seems encouraging. I'd be cautious about thinking he'll be up long, however. I'm guessing that his start wasn't so much about earning a promotion as it was being available. Dobnak pitched five innings on Sunday, so he wasn't an option. Thorpe pitched two innings on Sunday, so he was marginally available, plus someone is needed to pitch Game 2 on Thursday, which is currently listed as TBD. With the unexpectedness, that adds to the promise that he showed. Also, at the risk of being the jinxer, don't ignore the partial inning from Colome, coming in with no warmup to finish Duffey's inning. That's his sixth straight outing without allowing a run.
  12. Just a thought on Thorpe, but pitching only two innings on Sunday likely makes him as available as a doubleheader starter as a 27th man on Thursday, no?
  13. For some reason, I don’t even have any chicken thawed out.
  14. We could go with a bullpen game. Those were popular and drew rave reviews last year, right? ?
  15. Welp. There goes the rally. Killed again.
  16. I'm trying. I'm really trying. I'm trying so hard not to call Dan Gladden a doofus. But if I heard him correctly (and someone please, please, please, correct me if I'm wrong), he just said that sometimes a solo home run is "a rally killer." I think what he was trying to say is that whole thing where you string together several hits and then someone hits a homer, so the pitcher can now settle down and go back to the windup because there's no on base. There's this perception that maybe a double would have been better, because the next batter gets to come up with a duck on the pond, yadda, yadda, yadda. But we've got a problem here, Dano. If there were runners on base, the homer was, by definition, not a solo homer. And if it was indeed a solo homers, there weren't any runners on base, so it's hard to call it a rally. Please -- someone tell me I misheard. Any other announcer and I'd assume that was the case, but it's so easy to imagine that he said it.
  17. For what it's worth, Callis, Dykstra and Mayo agree on Chalmers: https://www.mlb.com/news/these-prospects-could-be-future-closers?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage. I think they all make sense for the reasons you describe, but I doubt we see them all at once. For now, Alcala, Colome, Duffey, Robles, Rogers, seem like locks, with Thielbar, Law and Anderson the other three. With their past histories, Duffey and Colome are going to have long leashes, and the latter has started to look better. With the 17 games in 16 days stretch they are in, I suspect we'll see heavy use of the Light Rail Shuttle. I wish they'd keep either Dobnak or Thorpe around for a time to serve as a true multiple inning reliever. When a starter goes five and they are still in the game, it would be nice to go to one of those and think that they might have a shot at finishing the game. Thielbar was so good last year, but with such a small sample in 2020 and his being 34, I suspect he's the next DFA candidate. If he continues to struggle to the point of being cut loose, I think it makes sense to go to Cano next, unless Stashak has bounced back to the point of getting another shot. And of course, an injury speeds up the tryout list.
  18. I think it would be great if his league went with one of those "Players Weekend" gimmicks and his uniform said, "Tortugas" on the front and "Not Tortuga" on the back.
  19. Perhaps I missed this being acknowledged on TD, but Ray Miller passed away this afternoon.
  20. Cagey veteran pitches around Gallo to go after the guy with seven career at bats.
