  1. We could use a magnificent seven(th), by the way.
  2. Ninja'ed. It's good for a laugh every time.
  3. One of the legendary play-by-play calls in baseball history:
  4. Few things me as much when listening to a Twins game as reaching the seventh. Last night's Gladden special while doing play-by-play was, upon the 2B needing to change directions to field a ball that hit the pitcher: "Solak needed to misdirect himself." Later, it was: "The Rangers have had one ejection this year. That was Gallo. And manager Chris Woodward."
  5. Particularly when one considers that they are 5 games back as I type. They trail a Kansas City team that is likely overperforming, a Chicago team that just lost their second stud and has no depth, and a Cleveland team with a crummy offense.
  6. Sorry -- can't do it. Can't bring myself to click the "like" button on a post complimenting mayonnaise. That does remind me of the ship overloaded with Hellmann's that went under just off the Mexican coast. It was the sinko de mayo.
  7. Since math isn't allowed here [though I violate that rule roughly 4^2 + (10 * 2^3) percent of the time], I'll drop in a little history. It's actually a popular misconception that Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence Day. The Mexican War of Independence (from Spain) lasted over more than a decade, ending in 1821. Mexican Independence Day is Sept. 16, 1810. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army's May 5, 1862, victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. It's a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, but has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations. Chicano activitists raised awareness of the holiday in the 1960s, in part because they identified with the victory of Indigenous Mexicans over European invaders during the Battle of Puebla. See https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/cinco-de-mayo for more, including numerous spots that I quoted directly.
  8. Huascar Ynoa with the grand slam for the Braves, by the way.
  9. Auto correct (or fat fingers) caught me on the former. It should have been "Lum and Abner." As a kid in the early 70s, WMT-600 (Cedar Rapids) syndicated one of the old radio shows each weeknight. Those are the ones I remember off the top of my head. They ran the Jot 'Em Down Store. According to Wikipedia, it was based on the town of Waters, Ark., which renamed itself to Pine Ridge in 1936 to match the fictional name from the show. My favorite was "The Life of Riley," where my favorite character was Digger O'Dell, the Friendly Undertaker. Said undertaker would often help characters, uh, out of a hole. There is a baseball connection with the latter. Playing Chester A. Riley was William Bendix, who also played the title character in "The Babe Ruth Story."
  10. Logging on for a quick check before heading to bed, so apologies if these have been mentioned, but what about Lim and Amber, Fibber McGee and Molly, and The Life of Riley?
  11. Yes, if Garlick has options and Cave doesn't, optioning the former seems the no-brainer. With Sano as the preferred 1B and Kirilloff added to the OF mix, whichever remains between Garlick and Cave becomes the 5th OF and should be getting Garlick-level numbers of at bats. I don't think you bring up Broxton before he gets at least a handful of at bats against live pitching, and being at St. Paul would actually give Garlick the chance for more at bats.
  12. I've always liked the idea of a rule where the FG is worth four if it's longer than 50 yards. Did they implement that?
  13. This is the biggest game of the year. If we don't win today, the season is over. If we don't win today, we should immediately: Fire both Falvey and Levine. Fire Rocco. Trade everyone except Buxton, Kirilloff, Arraez, and maybe Berrios, even if it's only for lottery picks. Move up 22 or 23 people from the Saints and Surge.* *I don't believe these -- I'm just trying to get a head start on the overreactions and save folks a few keystrokes.
  14. I like it. It's almost certain that a team isn't going to make it through the season with two catchers, so he'll probably be up for a looksee at some point anyway. Give a speed team a new arm to consider behind the plate for two of three games and see what you've got.
  15. I am serious. And don't call me "Clark."
  16. Let's hope he can hit only a wii bit.
  17. If people were skeptical that last year’s shortened 60-game season didn’t represent his real self, it’s hard to get overly worked up about the 18-game start to this one, particularly given what illness and injury have done to the defense behind him.
  18. It wasn’t a lateral move, was it? Didn’t he go from hitting coach to bench coach, and isn’t that considered a promotion?
  19. I apologize for my skepticism. Bringing up Kirilloff was the answer.
  20. Gladden: “Ground ball, foul, inside the third base line.”
  21. I was there (twice) at the 6/26/77 game you reference. I was an 11-year-old and kids 12-and-under got a Carew shirt. My bro-in-law wanted a shirt as well, so he bought an extra two tickets. We went in to the left field seats, got a shirt, exited, and re-entered in right field to get another. It was cool at Twins Fest a couple years ago to ask Carew about it and have him describe it as his most memorable day as a Twin. It was my most memorable day as a child as well.
  22. The exception is Triple A West, which for some reason has its off-day on Wednesday.
  23. Other good options are the weeks beginning May 25 and July 6, when the Saints play at Iowa and both Cedar Rapids and Wichita are at home.
