I know Cutch, Brantley, and Markakis are more preferable options, but don’t count out a Denard Span reunion (.341 OBP in 2018). Not a flashy move, but a quality addition nonetheless. However, in order to make any kind of move like this possible, Kepler will likely have to play some 1B and Rosario will need to split time between LF and DH (perhaps 2B too).
-
Buxton for sure, Sano not so much (for a number of reasons). How about Kepler though? Probably could get him to sign for less than Sano would, then we’d be able to use whatever’s leftover on a Berrios extension.

I get what you’re saying, but when you’ve got two all-star veterans like Lowrie and Cruz readily available for a relatively affordable price ($60M total), mixed in with fact that Cleveland is “retooling,” why not sign them? Could it possibly be for naught? Sure, but it also could win us the division.
-
Just like Cron, Pineda, Gibson, Castro, and Odorizzi, I really hope Reed can at least bounce back with a respectable 2019; not only for the sake of helping the Twins win the division, but also putting the club in good position to sell off their expiring/quality assets if they don’t.
-
No doubt that we’re in need of two high OBP guys, but I don’t want the very same empty OBP that both Mauer and Grossman provided. What we need are guys who not only get on-base, but can hit the ball with some authority, which is why I’m still holding out hope that the FO can come to their senses and sign both Cruz and Lowrie.

Not sure whether I should be concerned or encouraged about the speed of which the hot stove is heating up, and what this means for the Twins and how they’re going to approach this offseason (patientnce/aggressiveness). Yeah they picked up Cron, gave roster spots to Wade/Gordon/Arraez, and non-tendered Grossman, but they’ve yet to make (or atleast indicate) that they’re seriously preparing to make that “impact signing” and or a “big acquisition.” And maybe the FO is still planning on that, as they’ve been known to have interest in Corbin, LeMahieu, Happ, Goldschmidt, and possibly C. Santana. On the other hand, perhaps they’re now feeling less confident in the free agent market than compared to last year, due to the disaster that was the 2018 season. Regardless, we still have need for an “offensive minded” 2B, preferably a left-handed starter, and several bullpen arms, and while I feel the FO will meet those needs, I’m predicting that we’ll be somewhat underwhelmed when the offseason is said and done. Hopefully I’m wrong, especially with the winter meetings coming up, but at the moment this is what to expect come Opening Day... Starting Lineup: RF- Max Kepler 2nd- Jed Lowrie* SS- Jorge Polanco 1st- C.J. Cron DH- Eddie Rosario 3rd- Miguel Sano CF- Byron Buxton C- Mitch Garver LF- Jake Cave Bench: Tyler Austin Ehire Adrianza Jason Castro * —> other options include Murphy/LeMahieu/Dietrich/Gordon/etc. Starting Rotation: Jose Berrios Kyle Gibson Derek Holland* Michael Pineda Jake Odorizzi *—> other options include free agents like Eovaldi/Keuchel/Happ, as well as Romero/Thorpe/Stewart/Mejia. Bullpen: CL- Cody Allen* SU- Trevor May (A. Miller/Hader type role) Adalberto Mejia* Taylor Rogers Addison Reed Gabriel Moya Blake Parker* Matt Magill * —> other options include FA like Kelly/Herrera/Strickland/Wilson as well as Hildenberger/Vasquez/Curtiss/De Jong/Littell/Stewart/Romero/Thorpe.

Now I get you don’t like the idea of finding “the next Eovaldi,” but have a good feeling about Shelby Miller, yeah he’s been hampered by injuries (like Eovaldi), but his stuff almost as good. And now that he’s been non-tendered, perhaps the Twins can swoop in a sign him to a 1yr/$4.5M deal with incentives. Could be a steal, but if not, we can always move him to the bullpen or cut just him loose. Then again, we could always trade for a proven (and underrated) SP like Julio Teheran, Wouldn’t even have to give up much since Teheran is slated to earn $11.17M next year ($1M in 2020, if team option exercised).

I know we’re talking about hypotheticals, but since this is reality, what are the chances we make a trade as impactful as this? And if so, for who??? Carlos Santana’s still an obvious candidate (move Cron to DH), Eugenio Suarez might be available, Gary Sanchez(???), ATL might wanna move on from Julio Teheran, or perhaps ARI could attach Ketel Marte to Greinke’s contract for a sizable return.
-
Still have a hard time believing that a 1-2 inning guy like Diaz (and Cano’s contract) is worth any of Kirilloff, Graterol, Lewis, or Romero. Hypothetically, my highest offer to Dipoto would’ve been Gonsalves, Arraez, Celestino, and Duran. And depending on how the talks are progressing, I might make Javier, Gordon, and Enlow available too.
-
Hence the reason why we should be in on FA relievers like Kelly, Miller, Herrera, Ottavino, Kimbrel, and Allen this year, and Jansen and Vizcaino next.

Taking a step forward is much different than maximizing a team’s potential; which is something I don’t expect to happen. Regardless, I understand and agree with the point your getting at; we need someone to sit next to Berrios at the top of the rotation, I just don’t think Syndergaard’s the guy. And while I’d prefer Eovaldi, I’m not entirely opposed to signing Keuchel (Corbin too, but cmon), but assuming they both sign somewhere else we’ll likely have to settle for Holland or Happ which is something I wouldn’t really complain about.

I’m not saying that there’s never a time to go “all in,” but there’s no question that right now’s not the time, especially if it means giving up future quality players like any of Lewis, Kirilloff, Graterol, or Romero. Now if the FO can acquire Syndergaard without giving up any of those prospects, then by all means go right ahead, but I feel we may need to “grossly overpay” in order to get the deal done; which is something most fans (myself included) may not feel comfortable with, especially when the guy we’d be trading for hasn’t exactly been as healthy or consistent as one would hope for when giving up high end talent. Lastly, you need to remember that this is a mediocre team (and Syndergaard won’t change that), but it won’t be forever as I expect the Twin’s core to really take a step forward next season (so don’t subtract from it). And if that happens, surely the FO will feel much more confident in seriously pursuing FAs like Arenado/Ozuna/Andrus/Jansen/Vizcaino/Wheeler/Teheran next offseason.

Here’s to hoping that the FO can somehow work out a trade involving Grossman and Odorizzi before the tomorrow’s deadline. Unfortunately, dealing Grossman will be tough, but the Twins shouldn’t have a problem finding a taker for Odorizzi as teams like Toronto and Oakland could sure use some starting pitching.- 54 replies

Why trade for Thor now, that’s the type of move that teams make when they’re ready to make a (serious) WS run, not when the future’s uncertain. Besides, we already have tons of talented arms who could reach the big leagues (and perform) as early as next season (Romero/Graterol/Stewart/Gonsalves/Thorpe/Enlow/Alcala/Wells). While I agree that we need add a starter (via trade or free agency), I’m not sure it’d be in best interest of the club’s future if it were someone as expensive as Syndergaard/Keuchel/Corbin. And while I’d love it if the Twins signed Eovaldi, That’s highly unlikely due to Houston and Boston’s presence, so at the moment we’re probably better off bargain shopping for arms like Shields, Holland, Buchholz, and Sanchez (again) or trading for someone like Marcus Stroman.

I love Rosario, but his defense can be really questionable at times, so why not move him to a part time role at DH, let Kepler play LF, and then sign someone to play RF on a 1 year deal (Jones/Span/Markakis??). Yeah, we ‘could’ find more playing time for Cave, but I’d rather go with a veteran, and besides, Cave seems more like trade chip anyways; always need more pitching.
-
Why give up anything for Gray when we have Romero/Mejia/Thorpe/Stewart??? Now if we’re talking Eovaldi, I’d be all in, but this is a guy who struggled immensely on the big stage to the point of being demoted to the bullpen and yet is still likely to command an unfair return (cmon it’s the Yankees, what do ya expect); hard pass. And enough with the Machado talk, it ain’t happening. Now while I’m encouraged to see that we’ve shown interest in LeMahieu (a quality player), I really doubt we’re gonna come on top in that market given that we’re competing with the Nats and the Dodgers, along with the fact that the FO pretty much said they weren’t going be big FA players this year. And given the state of the Twins at the moment, I’m not sure why we’re even interested in LeMahieu, other than the fact that he’s a 2nd basemen, because Jed Lowrie just seems like a way better fit. Think about it, we wouldn’t have to commit as much $$$ or years to Lowrie, and in return we’d get the same, if not better production from him compared to if we signed LeMahieu. Now all we have to do is convince Lowrie that MN is the best state to live in, oh wait.

Loving the youth that’s on the 40 man roster right now, but I’d still like to see someone else in Granite, Grossman, Slegers’ roster spots by the start of ST.

Besides Murphy, I really wouldn’t mind any of them, although I really hope the Twins can add Eugenio Suarez to the list of possibilities. I mean, the Padres kicked the tires on him, why not us, we have the bigger need.- 39 replies

A First Basemen with Familiarity
ChrisKnutson commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
Santana doesn’t sound so bad, especially if we lose out on Cruz and Lowrie. Assuming we’re not gonna be big players on the free agent market, with an exception to the bullpen overhaul, trading for Santana and signing Josh Harrison could be all we need to complete the starting lineup. RF- Max Kepler SS- Jorge Polanco LF- Eddie Rosario 1st- Carlos Santana DH- Miguel Sano 3rd- Josh Harrison CF- Byron Buxton 2nd- Nick Gordon C- Mitch Garver- 7 comments

Honestly, I’d rather have Harrison, not only because he’s a better hitter than both Iglesias and Galvis, but that he’s also a hell of lot more versatile (3rd/2nd/OF/SS) than any FA not named Marwin Gonzalez, which in my eyes is a huge plus because of the questions surrounding the middle infield and 3rd base. He may not be a Gold Glover, but if healthy, Harrison is an overall better player than both Iglesias and Galvis, and might come at a bargain price due to his “down year” and the presence of Gonzalez, Machado, Donaldson, LeMahieu, and the two defensive studs I compared him to.
